3/18/21 - Blue US Postal Service Collection Box with your bike leaning against it

There is one of these a block away from me -- close enough so that on occasion I have walked there at night barefoot and in my nightgown. (Did I mention that I have no dignity?) But it seemed unsporting to use that one, so I looked for others on my ride. I was surprised to see how few there were -- less than one per mile.

On March 18, 1766, the Stamp Act - a tax levied on the British colonies in America which required that many printed materials be produced on stamped paper produced in London - was repealed. It was enacted in 1765 to pay for British military troops stationed in the American colonies that were there to protect from a French invasion, but the colonists thought the tax was unfair (plus they weren't really worried about a French invasion).

I know that the Stamp Act wasn't about stamps in the way that we think of them now, but since the word "stamp" made me immediately think of the Postal Service, let's go out and find one of those blue USPS collection boxes.

Fun fact: letter boxes started out as green in 1860, then red in the 1880s, silvery white from 1897-1905, then back to green. In 1955, they were Red, White, and Blue, and finally in 1970, they came to look like they do now: solid deep blue color with reflective decals featuring the Postal Service's eagle seal.

    Happy hunting!

I was beginning to despair of finding one without having to go by a post office until I got to my coffee stop, and lo and behold!

I went directly to the local post office because stand-alone boxes away from a post office have been absent in our area for years.

I thought it fitting that near end of Freezing Saddles, which challenges us to ride every day through every kind of weather, when sometimes doing so meant that only we and the postal workers were out, drevil chose this object to find. And predictably, as I started my ride today, it began to rain again. I had carefully scanned the radar but ... at least it was warmer rain than the last time. There is a box oh so close to my house, but I wanted a bit more mileage so rode past about half a dozen of them before getting to the local post office for this photo.

Perhaps the unofficial motto of the postal workers should be the unofficial motto of the Freezing Saddles every-day-riders: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these riders from the determined completion of their appointed rounds.

There's a post office just two blocks away from where I live, and while I got a photo of the pair of boxes, I wanted to find one in the "wild". That meant keeping off the usual bike trails and riding through the neighborhoods.

I found two in Ledroit Park (where I took this one).

    3/18/21 - post office box

I took this a mile from my house at Westover. Then I rode out to meet Anne. Managed to miss most of the rain!
