Default Veterans Day ride in Alexandria -- Wednesday, Nov. 11

Which statue in Alexandria honors a veteran who received the Congressional Medal of Honor, America’s highest honor, for his courage while a prisoner of war? Which building in Alexandria contains graffiti from a Civil War soldier? Why is there a cannon at the intersection of Braddock and Russell Roads? Come find out about some of Alexandria's memorials to veterans on this free bike ride organized by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (and yours truly).

    When: Wednesday, November 11. Register for a specific start time -- 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. -- by going to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/veteran...s-127641799057.

Where: We'll meet at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, then hop on our bikes and ride to various veterans' memorials in Alexandria. The route is about 12 miles, with a mix of neighborhood streets and bike lanes: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33942178. The last half of the ride involves some hills and some busier streets, but we'll ride as a group to help keep everyone safe.

Who: Hopefully, you! Plus a number of forum friends who have already volunteered to help with this ride (thank you, CaseyKane50, Judd, and lordofthemark). I'm also looking for one more sweep to help with the 11:00 a.m. ride -- if that's you, please let me know! Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome.

For everyone's health and safety, we'll be taking the following precautions:

    • breaking into small groups of 10 riders (1 ride leader, 1 sweep, and 8 participants)
    • requiring participants to sign up in advance for specific time slots starting at 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., or 11:00 a.m.
    • asking everyone to self-screen and not ride if they've experienced symptoms of covid or been exposed to a known covid case within the last 14 days
    • asking people to wear masks at the beginning and end, and also while riding if they can breathe comfortably while doing so
    • asking people to give each other at least 10 feet of space while riding
    • keeping an eye on local covid conditions, and cancelling the ride if needed

Bring a functioning bike, a helmet, water, a face covering, and hand sanitizer.
