Women's history ride in Alexandria -- Saturday, 8/15

This year is the centennial of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Come find out about Alexandria's role in the women's suffrage movement and trailblazing Alexandrian women in government on a free bike ride organized by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Alexandria Celebrates Women, and the Alexandria Spokeswomen.

When: Saturday, August 15. Register for a specific start time -- 7:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., or 8:30 a.m. -- by going to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/womens-...s-113229135392.

Where: We'll meet near Market Square in Alexandria, then hop on our bikes and ride to various stops associated with women's history in Alexandria. The route is about 14 miles, with a mix of neighborhood streets and bike lanes, plus a few hills: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31837986.

Who: Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. For everyone's health and safety, we'll be taking the following precautions:

• breaking into small groups of 10 riders (1 ride leader, 1 sweep, and 8 participants)
• requiring registrants to sign up in advance for specific time slots starting at 7:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., or 8:30 a.m.
• asking everyone to self-screen and not ride if they've experienced symptoms of covid (fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, sore throat, muscle aches) or been exposed to a known covid case within the last 14 days
• asking people to wear masks during the stops, and also while riding if they can breathe comfortably while doing so
• asking people to give each other a lot of space while riding (at least 10 feet, and preferably 20 feet)
• keeping an eye on local covid conditions, and cancelling the ride if needed

Bring a functioning bike, a helmet, water, a face covering, and hand sanitizer. Costumes from 1920 are encouraged! Or wear (or decorate your bike with) the colors of the women's suffrage movement -- purple, gold, and white.

Bummed we missed this due to a stupid virus. How big a group showed up?

I'm bummed we missed seeing you and Jo! Between the three original rides and the encore ride for people who couldn't make it the first time around, we ended up having 17 participants plus 9 amazing volunteers who made the event possible. Our biggest group of riders was 8 people total, which felt pretty safe with appropriate social distancing.

A huge thank you to the forum friends -- including Judd, caseykane50, lordofthemark, and Steve O -- who volunteered or helped spread the word about the ride. And also to SarahBee, whose presence automatically made my group the most fun group.

Josephine did a fantastic job to make this ride low risk. Small groups, lots of space at stops, avoiding trails, masks and hand sanitizer available and all the ride leaders had portable speakers so they could keep their mask on and still be heard while we were spread out. A+++ Would volunteer to sweep again.

There’s a rumor that there will be another cool ride announced soon...
