Public art ride in Alexandria -- Saturday, 9/19
Which new mural in Arlandria highlights the causes and consequences of mass incarceration? Which marble-and-limestone sculpture weighs 30,000 pounds? Where is the statue that commemorates two teenage girls who attempted to escape from slavery in 1848? Come find out about some of Alexandria's public art on a free bike ride organized by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (and yours truly).
When: Saturday, September 19. Register for a specific start time -- 8:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., or 9:00 a.m. -- by going to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/alexand...s-119962861147.
Where: We'll meet at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, then hop on our bikes and visit some of Alexandria's statues, sculptures, murals, mosaics, and other public art. The route is about 14 miles, with a mix of neighborhood streets and bike lanes, including some hills: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33883158.
Who: Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. For everyone's health and safety, we'll be taking the following precautions:
- breaking into small groups of 10 riders (1 ride leader, 1 sweep, and 8 participants)
- requiring registrants to sign up in advance for specific time slots starting at 8:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., or 9:00 a.m.
- asking everyone to self-screen and not ride if they've experienced symptoms of covid or been exposed to a known covid case within the last 14 days
- asking people to wear masks during the stops, and also while riding if they can breathe comfortably while doing so
- asking people to give each other at least 10 feet of space while riding
- keeping an eye on local covid conditions, and cancelling the ride if needed

Bring a functioning bike, a helmet, water, a face covering, and hand sanitizer.

It looks like the 9:00 slot has already sold out. I'll be leading the 8:30 slot and hope to see ya'll there. Josephine's compiled a great list of public art and done a lot of research about each piece so it should be a great ride.

This was a great ride. Hopefully Josephine will post the route and her notes. Here’s one of my favorites pieces from the ride today. It’s called the Event by David Smedley.

An amazing ride! Had a wonderful time with the 9am crew. Explored new places; saw art I had breezed by before, but never stopped to enjoy; and learned some local history. Thanks to organizers and BPAC!

Something about the Eggs in Space grabs me every time I ride past it. I took pix of the statues and put them over on Flickr.

It was great to see so many forum friends on today's ride, including SarahBee, ImaCynic, Jessica Hirschhorn, smb9600, Rimas, and Starduster! And a special thanks to Judd and CaseyKane50, who volunteered to lead and sweep, respectively.

More photos and an annotated ride guide are available here.

And on the way home, I discovered a doggie food truck!
