RESTONTODC - hope you're recovering well. Falling sucks.

    On an unrelated note...

vvill, we're moving to Cherrydale in a few months, and I'll have the option of going a bit out of the way to get on the trail at Nelson, or take Lee Hwy for a few blocks (from the old firehouse, to be exact) and getting on the trail at that horrible corner. Thoughts? (Oh, and I'm no Dirt on the hills -- fewer / less steep hills = better)

Well, going towards DC that part of Lee Hwy does have a bike path and is a nice downhill but there's also reasonably fast moving traffic and parked cars right next to the bike lane. Occasionally there's a vehicle fully blocking the bike lane. When the bike lane disappears I believe the design/intention is for the rider to go up onto the sidewalk to the right and join the Custis before crossing the bridge over Lee and going down the S-curve of death. I prefer to stay on the sidewalk for an extra block and then cross as a pedestrian and yeah, then I join the trail at that horrible corner. You do really have to watch for [bike] traffic coming from your left as you merge onto the trail, and the runoff that RESTONTODC mentions often manifests itself on the sidewalk just before you join the trail (above the storm drain in the picture) - mostly gravel and dirt. I've had my tires slip there a few times. Also - I ride in pretty early, and I'd be riding there on Lee no later than 7:45am, so traffic might be a lot worse in true peak hours. I've never ridden the backstreets to Nelson but I imagine it's safer, but slower.

Going westwards, I've only ridden back from DC on Lee once or twice, since it's all uphill with traffic - I usually take Lorcom Ln home.

RESTONTODC, I'm very sorry to hear about your fall and I hope you recover quickly. Hope you can get back to the bicycle commute asap.

Soon to be my neighbor. We live right next to the old fire station in the townhouses. You can use my air compressor any time you want!

I bike down Lee Hwy on the North side, and swing onto the Custis Trail through the Lyon Village Shopping Mall /CVS parking lot. Its fine. Gotta watch for cars and watch for sand collecting on the sidewalk right before Lyon Village. You moving into those new apts is it the Bromptons? next to the Fire House?
