Default Firefly and Bat Walk - June 16th - Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail

How do fireflies produce their glow? Why are bats an important part of the ecosystem? Come find out on our firefly and bat walk.

    About this Event
How do fireflies produce their glow? Why are bats an important part of the ecosystem? Come find out on our firefly and bat walk. We'll meet at the corner of Abingdon and Slaters Lane outside of the Salvation Army Headquarters. After talking briefly about the different species of fireflies and bats, we'll walk a loop around the old power plant, looking for fireflies and listening for bats using a special bat microphone. The walk is about 1.5 miles and will end by 9:30 p.m.

If you'd like to meet up for coffee or dessert before the walk, we'll be at Buzz Bakeshop at 901 Slaters Lane starting at 8:00 p.m.

    Things to bring:

    1. Flashlight (preferably with red light setting).

    2. Reflective vest if you have one -- we will have some extras.

    Inclement Weather:

In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled and notification will be sent by e-mail by 8 a.m. the day of the event.

    Getting there:

By foot or bike: The meetup spot is located on the Mount Vernon Trail north of Old Town Alexandria.

By public transportation: Take DASH bus AT5 to the Slaters Ln and W Abingdon Dr stop and walk .3 miles to the meetup spot.

By car: There should be street parking available in the neighborhoods off Slaters Lane.

It might happen. I donít want to give too much a way but all seven bat species that are common in northern Virginia are insectivores.

If a bat eats enough fireflies, will its belly begin to glow?

Ah, Buzz... A dangerous weekend ritual has recently evolved on my leisure rides, wherein I get a Tropical Smoothie Cafe salad/bowl for lunch...
Then feeling so good about my healthy choice and the ~22 miles of accumulated biking up to that point, I walk down to Buzz and grab a "9:30 Cupcake"...

I tried and tried to stretch my day out but here I am at Buzz at 6:30, finishing my cupcake... sigh.
Home soon to deal with the weekend’s procrastinated laundry... enjoy the walk!

    {Edit: Nice to have a flyby with Judd, just before I reached home!}

Should have just eaten cupcakes for another hour and a half. It was good to see you on Four Mile Run as I was headed to the event.
