Default Alexandria Earth Day bike rides on 4/27/19

Where will Alexandria's first two-way protected bike lane be installed? Where is the oldest surviving bridge in Alexandria? Which environmental project won a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in 2018? Find out the answers to these questions and much more on BPAC's Earth Day Rides on Saturday, April 27.

Why: Bike to see recent or planned infrastructure projects designed to improve Alexandria's water, air, and quality of life. There will be two bike rides, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and they will cover different projects. Sign up for either ride, or do both!
Where: Both rides begin and end at Alexandria's Earth Day celebration, at George Washington Middle School (1005 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria VA 22301).
When: Saturday, April 27. The morning ride will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m., and the afternoon ride will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. See route details below.
Who: These family-friendly, no-drop rides are organized by Alexandria's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (and yours truly!) and are open to everyone. The routes are flat, mostly on trails or low-stress neighborhood streets.

The 9:30 am. ride will go through the Potomac Yard and Del Ray neighborhoods. Along the 5-mile route, we'll discuss projects like the creation of the Potomac Yard Trail, the future Potomac Yard metro station, the Four Mile Run stream bank restoration project, the planned Mount Jefferson traffic garden, and the Simpson community garden. Details and registration at http://bit.ly/EarthDayAMride.

The 1:00 p.m. ride will go through the Old Town North and Old Town neighborhoods. Along the 8-mile route, we'll learn about projects like the planned improvements for the Mount Vernon Trail-Abingdon Drive intersection, the planned linear park in Old Town North, the River Renew project that will solve Alexandria's combined sewer system issues, and the future extension of the Old Cameron Run Trail. Details and registration at http://bit.ly/EarthDayPMride.

Happy Earth Day! Don't forget, the Alexandria Earth Day rides are coming up this Saturday, April 27 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Which infrastructure project will remove an estimated 5000 vehicles from the roads every day? What major issue with Alexandria's waterways needs to be remediated by 2025? Why is there a trail to nowhere at the southern end of S. Payne St.? Come find out on Saturday.

I hope folks are coming to at least one of the fantastic Earth Day rides that Josephine will lead on Saturday. Alexandria's Earth Day festivities run from 10-2 and there are lots of great organizations participating. There will be ample free bike parking. In addition to the two rides Alexandria BPAC is hosting a bike rodeo from 10-12.

    Bike Rodeo for the Kids:

Girl Scout Troop 3975 will be helping at the bike rodeo and made this video about it:

Great ride, Josephine! Learned a lot about the water/sewer issues and coming solutions... fascinating in its own way! And of course, enjoyed a stellar afternoon on two wheels!
Thanks for organizing and leading today, and for suggesting ice cream

Afternoon ride was great. Really neat to talk with the Alex Renew folks. I also liked the stop at the Combined Sewer Overflow 3 and 4 since I've ridden past it so many times without popping down that sidewalk. I didn't realize I was even crossing a bridge and had no idea Hoofs Run was down there.

It was great to see so many forum friends at the bike rodeo and Earth Day bike rides -- including ChristoB50, Judd, KWL, lordofthemark, and wheels&wings. Special thanks to LeprosyStudyGroup, reji, and Steve O for marshaling. All photos below were taken by LSG:

I've ridden over that bridge literally hundreds of times, and I never gave it a second thought until I was putting this ride together. That's one of the best parts of doing these rides. I get to learn about things in my own backyard that I never paid attention to before.

Lots more information about the bridge's history and architecture is available in the National Register of Historic Places registration form, available here.
