Default Bicyclist on I-66E on Monday 3/18

I was heading to work on I-66, heading East, around 8:45 AM on Monday on my antique Honda turbocharged bike and saw a bicyclist riding on the shoulder. Between Sycamore Street and Glebe road. Very odd, but the shoulder of the road IS quite large.

Did he have a transponder and pay the toll?

Freeway riding is legal out west where there is no alternative route. In my experience, riding on paved 12 foot shoulders is not stressful at all.

That is interesting because the W&OD detour in that area had been lifted by Monday morning. I guess he diverted before finding that out.

I saw a cabi riding down 66 in that same area about a year ago. A few days later I saw an abandoned cabi bike on the side of 66, possibly from the same person...

Amazing. Two bikes on I66 within a year, but one of my fellow Alexandrians says she has not seen a cyclist on Seminary Road in 30 years.

I dispute that claim as someone who used to ride on parts of Seminary Road between George Mason Dr and Beauregard and between Kenmore Ave and Janneys Ln. It's not the best road to ride on (especially during rush hour), but I did it when I was living in Alexandria.

I've also had someone tweet at me that she's never seen a bicycle on K Street NE...which is complete BS. I've heard similar claims from folks opposed to other projects. It's amazing how blind some NIMBYs can portend to be...

I did that once on I-66 East out by Marshall VA on Halloween dressed as Skeletor and leading a pack of 5 cyclists astray after a wrong turn on the Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge Route. It made for an interesting photo op when I talked my way out of a ticket by the VA Trooper who responded to the emergency calls from passing motorists and caught me in the act.

I've ridden it a few times. I think the City may need to start a program to provide ophthalmology help to residents, since many seem to have trouble seeing cyclists, regularly claiming to have never seen any in places we know they ride.

One of the more popular cycling routes for roadies in Kyiv/Kiev is heading west out the M06/E40 (Ukrainian Motorway). And yeah, I did it.

Cycling is prohibited on the German Autobahns.
