This isn't a ride, but this walk might be of interest to those who ride this area.

Local botanist Rod Simmons will be leading an impromptu field trip this Saturday, October 13 at 10:00 am at Daingerfield Island. Meet at the large south parking lot just south of the marina.
This is a beautiful area with tremendous native biodiversity. We can walk along the Daingerfield Island freshwater tidal marsh to the tidal channel at the boardwalk and see the tidal channel flow under the GWMP. Then we can simply walk across the GWMP to Potomac Greens Park and walk the old tidal channel up to the boardwalk loop at Potomac Greens Park. From this point, Rod can get us out to the GWMP and across to Daingerfield Island near the cove and not far from the parking lot.
Early scouting revealed a lot of diversity, tons of lepidopteran pollinators, and some plants needing documentation.

A Bit of Background:
The active freshwater tidal channel meets the active freshwater tidal channel on the west side of the GWMP at the southern end of Potomac Greens Park, non-daylighted only for the width of the distance of the GWMP. This entire channel is historically and currently a freshwater tidal channel, at least 60% of the distance northwards up the channel to the Potomac Greens Park boardwalk loop/proposed PYMS construction staging area. The channel in this area is permanently saturated, likely owing to impounded tidal flow to the south.

An important scientific fact - none of the obligate wetlands vegetation could survive and flourish anywhere in this channel without contiguous tidal flow from the Potomac River. Also bear in mind that this year's bizarre rainfall is a historical fluke - normally we have experienced record droughts and heat for all but 2 or 3 growing seasons since 1995! Unlike upland aquifers generating spring-fed streams, no such feeder streams exist at Potomac Greens Park and the GWMP to generate sufficient base-flow to sustain these extensive wetlands. The tidal Potomac River does it - sort of a giving back of water to terrestrial communities!
