    Default #CrossIsComing

DCCX registration has opened. This is one of your truly great opportunities to be introduced to CX. An in the city race. A festival atmosphere. Food trucks. Did I mention beer? UCI PRO races if you care about watching some Cat 1 and 2 posers. It is a great festival.

So the Cannon accosted me at coffee yesterday morning and I publicly (and perhaps regretfully) stated that I would register for this.
I have not yet, because I'm not sure if I should race Saturday morning or Sunday morning in the newbie race. Am open to advice on this decision.

I am woefully unprepared to do this, for two reasons:

    1) I do not have a bike
    2) I am woefully unprepared

DCCX is an amazing event and you'll have fun, I am sure. I don't know if it matters which day. I've raced once on Saturday and gone a few times as a spectator. I guess, I would recommend racing Sunday if you are riding your bike over there as that should be the quieter day to ride through DC.

I plan to be there one of those days with my son who is racing the 9-10 junior field. I don't know what size bike you ride, but you are welcome to borrow mine if 59cm fits. Ideally you'd have a bike you could practice on too, though, as the barriers and remount benefits from practice. I am terrible at it, but get some free practice opportunities now that my kid will be doing cx practices a couple times a week. Also, given my poor form in jumping back on the bike, it is lucky that I didn't want to have any more kids.

I'm wondering why there isn't newbie Masters class.

I'm signed up for the Saturday morning race, thinking that the course will be in better shape versus Sunday morning. While I have a bike, am learning that there are definitely skills to learn. The wooded area at the end of Powhatan St has some logs that can be used for practicing going over obstacles.

Good point on the course being in better shape on Saturday. They do have that off-camber hairpin turn that gets pretty sloppy after a few races have gone through.

I know there are cross bikes but if old mountain bike from the 90s would work you're welcome to it. It's a specialized hot rock 21 ".

    You gonna race????

Nothing like starting one minute ahead of the 60+ year olds...... and getting passed by the cat 1/2 60+ year olds 5 minutes into the race.

Of course what is really really great is that in one series, the 50+ year olds and the 60+ year olds get to race with the U19s. What could possibly go wrong??

Saturday v Sunday?? Way two many variables. Weather. Direction of the course. How good the beer hand ups are. Last year on the Sunday's direction I hit cobbles near the north side of the course and blew out both tires. Didnt even finish one lap.
