Default Let's improve Taney, Wolfe, Fayette, Wythe, and Mount Vernon

The City of Alexandria has put up a web survey soliciting feedback on upcoming street repavings. The current list now includes Taney, Wolfe, Fayette, Wythe, Montgomery and parts of Mount Vernon Avenue.

Here is a link to the survey form https://survey.alexandriava.gov/s3/C...treetsRepaving

Below are some suggestions from BPAC, but of course feel free to express your own ideas and concerns. (note, we have included suggestions for parts of Mount Vernon close to, but outside of, the repaving limits)

Taney from Early to Gordon. Add bike lanes, to extend the high comfort route parallel to Duke. They would be especially helpful Gordon to Furman. Improve the crosswalk striping at the intersections with Gordon and Early. Where bike lanes do not fit, add sharrows or advisory bike. Create a neighborhood bikeway? The improvement project within the park should be advanced. The traffic light on Early does not automatically detect bicycles and this should be changed.
Wolfe - Either add door zone bike lanes, or repave the road WITHOUT a center stripe. Highlight crosswalks. Add wayfinding signage directing users crossing Rte 1 to Wilkes.

Fayette - Lots of missing crosswalks, which should be added. Master Plan calls for sharrows, which should be added (at a minimum) consistent with Old Cameron Run Trail project. Daylight intersections should be possible. Replace Rapid Flashing Pedestrian sign at Duke and Fayette with a HAWK signal. Add a second crosswalk on the east side of Duke. Open up the median on Duke to accommodate the additional crosswalk.

Wythe - Restripe crosswalks, parking boxes, extend and fix sharrows. Consider daylighting intersections. Add bike lane by community center. Improve connection and signage by Braddock Metro station, and at trail connection at Fairfax. Would be especially helpful to have wayfinding to the Mount Vernon Trail on the east and the Potomac Yard Trail on the West.

Montgomery Consider a PBL and daylighting, assuming street remains one way.

    Mount Vernon Hume to Leadbetter.
Better bike striping across Commonwealth. Add sharrows on Mt Vernon, whole length. Review possible pedestrian improvements. Install pedestrian activation buttons that give LPI when activated for all crosswalks at Mt. Vernon Av-Commonwealth Av.- Hume Av. intersection.

Mount Vernon Avenue outside the repaving limits:
Add a crosswalk at Randolph and Mt Vernon. Mark existing crosswalk across Mt. Vernon Av. at E. Raymond Av. with large bars as at Hume Av. Install RRFB at the existing crosswalk at the entrance to the Birchmere parking lot. Install RRFB at the existing crosswalk near the building at 3836 Mt. Vernon and the parking lot entrance on the east side. Install pedestrian activation buttons that give LPI when activated for crosswalks at Russel Rd. and Mt. Vernon Av. Install pedestrian activation buttons that give LPI when activated for crosswalks at Executive Av. and Mt.Vernon Av. Install pedestrian activation buttons that give LPI when activated for crosswalks at Four Mile Rd. and Mt. Vernon Av. Install new crosswalk with RRFB at 4120 Mt. Vernon Av. (shopping center on west side) and the Farmers Market parking lot entrance on the east side.

It may be outside the scope, but I mentioned the bike detector on Commonwealth at Mt Vernon is terrible and only works sometimes.
