Default WB&A Trail Extension on MD-704

The Maryland-National Captial Park and Planning Commission is holding a community meeting and workshop on Tuesday, April 10th from 7-9 p.m. as part of a feasibility study on extending the WB&A trail along MD-704. Building this trail would fill a critical gap in the East Coast Greenway and also enable people to ride nearly entirely on trail from DC to Odenton.

A few folks from the forum rode on MD-704 to a WABA advocacy training for this extension. Although a recent road diet has added a bike lane, this is still a very hostile route for bikers and pedestrians. The speed limit is 45 on much of the road. Sidewalks are narrow and sometimes non-existant. There are long stretches between controlled intersections where pedestrians have to cross 6 lanes of 45 mph traffic. Access to bus stops along the route is poor (and who wants to stand by 45 mph cars waiting for a bus stop).

I'm going to try to make it out even though it's a bit far out on a weeknight. There's likely to be a few more meetings. If you or someone you know can make it (particularly if they live near MD-704) I do hope you can attend and start getting involved.

Complete details are on the flyer:

Meeting was well attended. Talk focused a bit too much on biking and not enough on the positive impacts for pedestrians. Fred from PG County parks did a nice walk through of the feasibility study which was funded by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Katie Harris from WABA and the Capital Trails Coalition spoke about how the trail would connected PG County to the regional trail network in DC. Garrett from WABA was there building a contact list to keep building on the momentum to build the trail after the feasibility study is completed. Daniel Paschall from East Coast Greenway was there to speak briefly on how this trail would close a gap in the East Coast Greenway.

The goal is to complete the feasibility study June 30th. After the feasibility study, funding for a 30% design would be needed. A 30% design involves actual surveying of the route and planning around geographical and vertical features. A 30% design is a critical and required step in obtaining funding to build the trail.

Sarah Bee was nice enough to give me a ride where we cursed as we sat in traffic on New York Avenue and were beaten down the block by a pedestrian.
