Default BAFS - Team #7 Official Post

It was great to meet all six others who showed up tonight. Nice showing!!

This is my first year as captain, so please bear with me. I don't know what I'm doing.

I created an official Strava Group which can be found at this link: https://www.strava.com/clubs/bafs18-team7

We sort of came up with an unofficial name of 7th Heaven, but we can certainly change that. But since seven of us showed up and we are team #7 and no one objected to that name, it certainly seems easy enough to me to leave it at that.

I'm not sure how Brett joined almost as soon as I created the group, but that certainly shows great initiative on his part!! Hmmm......Maybe he should be captain.

I'm tired (and slightly buzzed), so that's it for this official post. There will be more follow up later.

    Go Team Go!!

Hey everyone, I'm Brett. I met most of you at last night's Happy Hour, so that was awesome! I live in the Beltsville area, and commute in the opposite direction of DC, so you won't see me too often during weekdays. I do like to get out on weekends as well, and it's a common sight to see me joining rides leading out of Proteus Bicycles on Route 1 in College Park. Feel free to stop in tomorrow at the College Park Friday Coffee Club at the Board and Brew around 8am.

Also, it looks like Teams 5 and 6 are also in close proximity to us, and because they are full of awesome people (not as awesome as us, mind you), I hear they wouldn't mind having more tag along for rides!

Hello, all! I'm history geek, aka Christy. This is my third freezing saddles (though I skipped last year). I'm a regular bike commuter-- Hyattsville to the Palisades area of DC-- four days a week (well, once the students come back next week, anyway). During the regular year I really only bike for practical purposes: to and from work, to the grocery store, to a happy hour, but not longer rides. I try to break out of that during BAFS, so I'd love to join group rides up and down the Anacostia trail system, especially. I only have one bike, though, and it's a hybrid, so I'm not particularly fast. I'm not sure I'd be that fast regardless, but I'm sticking with my excuse.
I will be solidly mid-pack for BAFS-- I'm never going to be one of the people doing 2000 miles in three months, because, well, I don't want to. But I bike as long as there isn't ice making it unsafe, and my commute is on the longer side, so there's that. And I got a new rain poncho for Christmas that I'm dying to try out.
When I'm not biking I'm a historian, working at the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project. I'm also building a soapbox derby car for my 8-year-old in my spare time (I usually build furniture, and this is my first attempt at building something with wheels), and helping campaign for Candace Hollingsworth for PG County Council (she's currently the mayor of Hyattsville).
And I will bribe whomever it takes to get the picture from that awful seventh heaven show removed from our team page on Strava. For real. I'm fine with the name, though I spent my ride home thinking of other common phrases with seven in them. I'll date myself by saying that the first one that came to mind was Seven and the Ragged Tiger, which is the title of a Duran Duran album.
seven deadly sins (and related-- the film Seven. But I couldn't come up with a team name based on a "don't look in the box" joke).
seven dwarves (but we're all dopey for participating in this silly game, right?)
seven wonders of the ancient world
and, of course, the days of the week. That was as far as I got. So no particularly useful ideas, and happy to stick with the current name, but that picture is just awful.
And since clearly I'm avoiding work, I should get back to that...

    Default hello Team 7

This is Rumi, I live in Hyattsville and commute 18 miles (round trip) every week day when the weather permits, sometimes with Christy AKA History Geek, who was my very first biking partner who showed me the ropes 2 years ago. I work at 15th and New York Avenue NW. Super Excited to join my first Freezing Saddles!

lol, that would be me. I was just trying to be clever to have a picture that went with our name instead of just a boring blank nothing. I've never watched the show, so I don't really know how awful (or great) it was.

How much of a bribe are we talking about?? I'm pretty easy, so a Snicker's Bar or a Little Debbie on ride sometime would probably be enough.

    Default Hello!

Hello, Team 7! This is my first FS. I tagged along to a few events last year and did a few beer rides and HH. So decided to join in on the fun this year. I primarily mountain bike, so if you want to ride dirt, let me know. I live in Berwyn Heights, near Lake Artemesia. I used to commute more, but haven't in the past year or so... but guess I'll start doing that again soon.

It was great to meet everyone last night! Looking forward to the next 3 months of fun. Looking forward to FS2018 and team rides and other events. I joined the Team 7 group, it was super easy to do, as long as you are logged into Strava!

PS: Full disclaimer, I will most likely not pull in the longest miles, but I will ride my bike when I can! Also, I will try to check the forums more.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I guess I should also do a bit of an intro.

This is only my second year of FS. I was dumb enough to volunteer to be a team captain, so here I am. I guess not many people volunteer.

I've always enjoyed riding my bike and being outdoors, but only if the weather cooperates. I don't mind cold weather, but I don't do wet. And by cold weather, I mean temps down to the mid 20's. I may tough it out for an hour or so if it gets colder, but not much more than that. I'll most likely go for a hike or a walk instead. Or as I did this past cold spell, get out of town!!

I don't do errands on my bike since I can walk to everything. I have four grocery stores, my Dr. and Dentist, the auto mechanic, the post office, a bunch of places to eat, and the liquor store all within walking distance.

Over the past 25+ years, I've been riding an average of about 10k per year. Some years higher, some years less. This was mostly while working full time as a CPA/Tax preparer and not riding much in March, April, Sept. or through Oct. 15 (although I did ride my bike to work on weekends during those months). I sold off a good portion of my clients at the end of 2016 and decided to call it quits and enjoy my life while I can. Hence the insane 20k miles I rode last year.

And one final, important note. Just because I happen to be the captain means nothing. This is our team!! I want you all to participate here on the forum or on our Strava group page for input and ideas of stuff we can do. The odds of you all wanting to join me for one of my hilly 60-70 miles rides is probably slim, but the chance of me riding along with you folks is much higher. I'm open to suggestions, and since I don't know the PG County area well, may have to rely on you all.

I might have to get out to join you for some of your hills rides, Alan! It'll be in better weather with less salt on the road so I can take out my light road bike. I'll still get dropped on the hills though cause I need to lose some weight.

During the summer, I have lead road rides for Proteus up from College Park out to Columbia and Bowie and everywhere in between, so I'm fairly familiar with the roads in this area. There is some fantastic trail riding in the area with the Anacostia Trail System for those looking for a relaxing ride, nice quiet roads with average rolling hills for those who like quick roads, and parks like fairlands for those who like MTB roads.

Oh! And if you like beer, I'm thinking about leading a brewery tour early-mid February, which will include 3 Stars, Right Proper, Atlas Brew works and probably end at Franklin's in Hyattsville. I'll post details to this thread when that is finalized.

Additionally, there is a freezing saddles calendar that has all freezing saddles related events posted to. Check it out and feel free to "infiltrate" other teams events!!
