Monday recovery ride on the Pugsley through Grüneburg and Nidda Parks. I took a different set of trails than usual on my second pass through Niddapark. I was out at 10 am and it had just reached freezing so the trails were solid with ice in places. By the time I finished after stopping for coffee, it was 39°F and the top layer of stone dust sludge had started to melt.

Back to Grüneburg and Nidda Parks both before and after lunch. The temperature warmed up to the mid to upper 30s so the trails were thawed out and quite sloppy again.

Sunrise through the parks before my flight. This time I did not have to wash the bike off because the trails were still frozen!

1.8 #fs2018dirtbiker miles in Bloomington, IN riding the Bloomington Rail Trail, from the Heise Bridge by Church Lane to Country Club Drive. This segment is muddy crushed stone on an old Monon Line rail bed and parallels Clear Creek (there is a hamlet by the same name). My great grandfather had a farm that abutted the railroad in the area. North of Country Club Dr the trail is paved and called the B-Line. South of Church Lane the city and county lost a court case trying to obtain access to the abandoned right-of-way.

I got about two and a half miles of Loudoun County gravel on today's ride. Most of that was on the W&OD parallel gravel/crushed stone bridal trail. Then I rode Canby Rd from Thomas Mill Rd to Harmony Church Rd.

I've been missing my gravel so I took a couple turnoffs from the Virginia Capital Trail on gravel drives to get almost 2 miles. The first was to Westover Church near milepost 25. The second was back toward a farm across from Sherwood Forest (President Tyler's home) at milepost 17. I've been curious about a set of chimneys there which look like a burned down plantation house and here was another gravel drive to them which always has chain across. I really didn't get a much better view than you get from the trail, so my curiosity is unquenched.

Riding across DC today I decided to see how much gravel I got riding on the Mall from 14th St NW to 3rd St NW on the path along Madison. Subtracting out the strrt crossings I came up with .7 miles, so close. Of course that meant I needed to find another .3 miles. No problemo! I took the gravel trail around 2/3 of Greenbelt Lake (a full mile) and the some dirt and gravel taking a shortcut in Anacostia Park, Section G, about another .3 miles, so I'm golden!
