A late ride today because I actually got in the car and drove to the Commissary to buy frozen goods including a turkey. When we got back I took out the Pugsley and went for a Parks Loop stopping at Bachbäcker on Grüneburgweg in Westend for a coffee and Zimtschnecke (I don't know if that counts for #fs2018donut).

I had hoped to hit a place for coffee and doughnuts, but got off course in Enkheimer Ried and turned too soon. By the time I realized that, it wasn't worth the effort to go back. We headed back through Bornheim and stopped at Café Coo Coo by the Wasserpark. They also roast their own beans.

Today's ride to the CG for German class (got a coffee in the cafeteria, but I'll save that for another ride). Then after class I headed over to Bockenheimer Warte again to have lunch at Café Crumble (well, actually their Käse-Schinken frühstück). After lunch I stopped at the LBS on the corner, Per Pedale, and when I got back to my bike I discovered I had a lat front tire, a chunk of glass. I changed the tube and headed down the street, and there was another bike shop, Flame Rouge, at the other end of the block.

I stumbled out of my AirBnB this morning and onto my host’s rust bucket of a beach cruiser in desperate need of coffee after surviving the “world’s largest street party” in Rio de Janeiro known simply as “Carnaval”. I happened to find a delicious double espresso at Victoria Bakery on Av Nossa Senhora in Copacabana one block in, parallel to the iconic beach. The proprietor, Fernando, couldn’t have been more attentive, as he knew what I needed before I could muster the words in my pigeon Portuñol. I then surveyed the damage from the night before, which for some, had not yet ended. Life is indeed a beach sometimes.

The drive chain and SS cog, were rusted, too, except I soaked them overnight in used motor oil I got from the local PetroBras station around the corner!

While Boomer may be enjoying his Mardi Gras coffee rides in the warmth of Rio, today's Fastnacht ride was to Mainz and it's Fastnachtmesse and we started at -1°C. The third common term for carnival in German, Fastnacht, refers to the Swabian Alemannic carnival, which is found in Baden Württemberg, Franconia (northern Bavaria), Hesse, and much of Switzerland. Although this word looks like it comes from the German for the “eve of Lent,” in fact it is based on the Old German word fasen (“to be foolish, silly, wild”). Thus the word, sometimes spelled Fasnacht (without the t) actually means something like “night of being wild and foolish.” it was pretty quiet when we stopped for lunch with coffee at the Werner's Backstube and we weren't sticking around for the Parade of convertibles since we wanted to be back in Frankfurt before sunset.
