wait... would it count if the stationary bike was outside and moving, even if i wasn't the one moving it? i think this warrants at least a couple pages of debate

We've had this discussion. There is nowhere you can place a stationary bike such that rides on it would count for BAFS.

Are we still dropping by and saying hi? I'm new here, joined the forum about a month ago for Freezing Saddles.

After about 15 years off a bike, I got my first road bike earlier this year to compete in triathlons and do some commuting. Oddly, it wasn't until the summer ended and the weather began to cool that I started bike-commuting several days a week. Looking forward to seeing whether BAFS can push that to daily commuting and whether my brake cables freezeover.

For us newbies, is it essential to get snow/studded tires for commuting in the winter and participating in BAFS? My commute is along the W&OD from Vienna to DC. I generally take the W&OD to 4mile run and then the MVT north by the airport but can also take the Custis trail since I've heard that they plow the snow from it.

You might have to take some roads from Vienna to East Falls Church-ish when it snows. The Custis is almost always clear.

I find knobby tires essential (haven't tried studs), though some don't. But I prefer the route of getting a bike with knobby tires rather than switching tires or wheels around. So, a mountain bike or a gravel bike (preferably both). N+1=7.

If the ship is moving, it wouldn't be a simple loop.
