Default Tell Arlington Developers to Improve Bike Infrastructure

A new apartment building has been proposed at the corner of 18th St and Eads at the edge of Crystal City. As part of the development, the developer has agreed to upgrade the streetscape along both 18th St and Eads (wider sidewalks, new street trees, etc) but NOT the Eads Street Protected Bike Lane, which in addition to just being paint and plastic bollards also suffers from two bus stops that CROSS the bike lane. This is a precedent that needs to be stopped - Arlington's developers need to be upgrading infrastructure for ALL modes to mitigate their impact. The developer should be upgrading the PBL in front of the development to concrete with floating bus stops.

There are multiple opportunities to have your voice be heard:

    1) This development will go to the Transportation Commission TOMORROW Thursday November 2nd at 7:30pm. You can e-mail comments to their staff liaison at rbest@arlingtonva.us and ask that they be distributed to the commissioners or (for greatest impact) you can go and testify in person at their meeting. This development is the 2nd item on the agenda. TC will make a recommendation to the County Board on whether they should approve the development and it would be great if their recommendation included requiring upgrading the Eads Street PBL. There are many sympathetic members of TC (including forum member chris_s) but they need to hear from citizens to ensure that they act.

    2) This development will go to the Planning Commission on Monday November 13th at 7pm. This development is first on their agenda. You can e-mail comments to their staff liaison at Mstahlhut@arlingtonva.us and ask that they be distributed to commissioners, or (for the greatest impact) you can go and comment in-person at their meeting. The Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the County Board and the board gives it great weight. It would be awesome if they recommended requiring the developer to upgrade the Eads Street PBL in front of the development.

    3) This development will go in front of the County Board at either their regular meeting on Saturday November 18th or their recessed meeting on Tuesday November 28th. You can e-mail comments to countyboard@arlingtonva.us or go and comment in-person at their meeting. They are the ones who make the final decision, but the Board meeting is often too late to make significant changes to a project - it would be best of Staff and the Developer see enough pushback PRIOR to the Board Meeting that they show up at the Board meeting having already addressed the issue.

    Tonight's Adopted Motion:

Transportation Commission recommends that the County Board Adopt the attached ordinance approving an amendment to SP#13 to permit construction of a multifamily building for up to 252 dwelling units, with modifications for parking ratio and compact parking, subject to the conditions attached to the ordinance and subject to an additional condition that they upgrade the protected bike lane along the Eads Street frontage to a curb-protected bike lane that eliminates the existing conflicts between bicycles and buses as part of their streetscape improvements in consultation with County staff.
