Yes, back in May they did that. I have been waiting for the return of the bike lane as was describe by Bike-Ped Manager:

I hope it is soon. At least the ground down lane marker was still a marker, now there is none. It felt like the cars were already closer to me and it was the first time after the chip-seal! Also, with darker commuting, it is really necessary to have clear markings.

Arlington is currently without a Bike-Ped Manager.

Army Navy Drive is being Microsurfaced. Shirlington Drive was also recently done. You can read more about the process and see the map of roads being done in 2017 here: https://transportation.arlingtonva.u...t-maintenance/

The page contains contact information for Alex Portillo. Might be worthwhile to give him a poke about how long the bike lane markings have been removed. They were also ground away for two or three weeks before work was done on Shirlington Dr. I haven't been that way in a bit to see if the new markings are in place since the surfacing was done.

Microsurfacing sucks as it regards riding a bike. It leaves the road surface rough and jolting if rolling with skinny tires. Shirlington Road used to be a fun, fast ride north to south, but now, not so much.

It does leave the road surface rougher. I am almost always rolling on 32s on these roads so it doesn't feel much different to me. The speedster bike has 25s and I haven't noticed too much difference when I ride on 6th Street South, but then again, according to the Trek marketing team, that bike was designed with input from Fabian Cancellara for the cobblestones of Belgium. Haven't ridden the 25s on Shirlington Rd yet.

My neighborhood streets were slurry sealed (same stuff only not as thick) as part of the same project. I don't object to the surface, in that it beats cracks and potholes.

But I would like to see the bike lanes put back. I sent Alex Portillo a quick note asking for info and a timeline.

I'm going to need to get a picture...

Feel free to ask dleach@arlingtonva.us both your question and when he expects to POST THE JOB OPENING for the bike-ped manager.

    jfel,

I go this way every day on my commute and the trail is difficult to find once you connect to Rotary Road unless you know it's there. Basically, where the road starts to turn right, you want to hang a left on to the sidewalk like you're going to the 9/11 Memorial. It feels weird to do, because of the bad pavement there and the feeling like you're about to salmon into oncoming traffic. (You're not really, but it feels that way.)

If you'd like, I'd be happy to ride in with you any morning this week or on the weekend if you want to test ride beforehand. I'm in the Penrose area and could meet you there. I'll probably also try to con you into going coffee club though.

Here's my ride in this morning if looking at the map helps:

I am happy to report that jfel successfully completed her first bike commute this morning. The coffee club seed has been planted. We also ran into Chris Slatt.
