Default MVT south commuters - new organization forming

Sorry for the late posting. Just saw this in my work inbox and it was posted 7/24:

I am happy to announce a new organization of bicyclists and bike commuters who use the Mount Vernon Trail south of Old Town Alexandria. We’re calling our group “MVT South” and we will be representing riders in the communities of Belle View, Mount Vernon and Fort Hunt in advocating for better and safer bicycling along area roads and trails. We welcome bike commuters, recreational riders, and anyone else who rides a bicycle in this area.

In the future, we plan to hold social events (picnics and happy hours) to bring riders together, work together with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) to promote bicycling in the DC metro area, and advocate for improvements to the Mount Vernon Trail and other area bicycle routes. We also plan to work with local shops to promote rides and help connect riders.

As a kick-off event, we will be holding a water and cookies station today at Belle Haven Park from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. If you’re riding in that direction this afternoon, please stop by and say hello!

In addition to talking to WABA, I would encourage them to talk to A. FABB, which is the main bike advocacy group in the jurisdiction they bike (and live?) in. B. Alexandria BPAC, which works on many issues that directly effect many of them I suspect.

I stopped by the water/cookie table when Adam had it a few weeks ago. Seems like if people actually participate, it will be a really nice group. I see the same couple of bike commuters frequently on the trail, so having a chance to get to know them more (outside of the 10 second chats we usually have when passing each other or stopped to cross Tulane) would be nice.

Based on the cross-posting Adam is doing, I think he's aware of and supports FABB at least. And yes, the communities he lists as examples are all in Fairfax. Alexandria BPAC is a good tip though. I follow them too so I'll look into that.
