Methinks the author is taking things a bit too seriously.

"Back when they first emerged founders Frank Strack and Brett Kennedy launched in 2009, I think the context was different. In the beginning, the list was shorter and served two purposes to codify some roadie traditions and to simultaneously mock those same traditions. It was, in my mind, both a reference manual of sorts and a tongue-in-cheek joke."

It's still this and if the author is riding with people that are attempting to "enforce" the rules, then he can easily find a different group of people to ride with.

The only thing funnier than the rules are those people who get bent into a cringle about the rules.

Long live the Rules. Rule #1: Obey the rules.

Rule #5. Can I get an Amen?

No kidding. I have always read the rules as mostly satire on top of grains of truth. Author needs to Rule 5 his Internet reading.

Or truth on top of satire.

And remember what Greg LeMan (who is revered by the Velominati ... and I count myself as one) said, "Rules were meant to be broken."

Except , of course, by Lance Armstrong.

Best not to follow or take the Rules to seriously. (Except #5 #9 and #43)

Rule 14: Shorts Should Be Black is a pretty darn good rule to follow too.

But that rule can be broken too ... if your name is Lizzie Armitstead (now Deignan).

I can't really agree with that one either. You know I like to wear all black, but I'll also proudly sport orange, red, or blue (MTB) shorts. Of course, they're likely talking tights because they wouldn't wear MTB shorts on a road bike. But I would.
