Mirror at Custis I-66 Underpass!
A mirror has sprouted at the blind turn on Custis where it comes out (or enters) the I-66 underpass between Bon Air Park and Westover Park (formerly tunnel of eternal darkness). I hear it has been up several days, but I went by in the dark before today. I am not sure it is large enough, but it might help in avoiding some nastiness there. I am looking forward to using it more regularly.

I don't ride that way often, but have thought that underpass needed a mirror- nice to hear there is one up now!

In which direction is the mirror useful?
Didn't someone post that the trail was going to be rerouted slightly on the Bon Air side to eliminate the 90 degree turn?

It's been up for a few weeks now - I find it too small (or poorly angled) to be useful.

This. The most you can hope for is that it reveals a lighted bike coming through.

The one at the _other_ I66 underpass (just east of the S-curve) is too small to be useful, and the angle keeps changing...

Yes, that section is going to be redesigned so there won't be any need for a mirror. Not sure why they bothered; it's been that way for 30 years and they put up a mirror for the last 6 months. Smart.
The only way mirrors at Lyon Village would ever have a prayer of being useful is if there were two and they were less convex - set up specifically for riders in each direction. I have made this suggestion at BAC meetings in the past.

The worst mirrors that I know of are the two on the W&OD going under the bypass at the eastern side of Leesburg. They are big enough, but whatever they are made of has gotten so warped and damaged over the years that one can't figure out much at all from them.
