Default Holmes Run Trail Detour - Bridge construction at Ripley Street

Alexandria will be starting the long-delayed construction of the pedestrian/bike bridge on the Holmes Run Trail at Ripley Street on Monday, March 6.

The project will include a new bridge across Holmes Run, new retaining walls and stream restoration.

During construction (expected to last 12 months), the trail will be closed between Ripley Street and Beauregard Street.

Trail users will need to follow a signed detour route to continue on the Holmes Run Trail.

This detour route is a newly signed High Water Detour for the Holmes Run Trail. Once the weather gets warmer, the City plans to install sharrows on the roads

The detour route will take westbound users of the trail up North Pegram, turning left on Richenbacher, crossing over Van Dorn Street to Sanger Avenue and then a left onto Beauregard Street before meeting the trail at Morgan Street. Eastbound users would cross Beauregard at Morgan and then head north on Beauregard, turning right on Sanger, crossing over Van Dorn Street to Richenbacher and then a right onto North Pegram and continuing south to the trail. (This detour route does involve riding with traffic, especially on Sanger and Beauregard.)

Here is an update from the City
The Holmes Run Bike Trail project is progressing. Installation of the panels for the first retaining wall started on Monday July 10th. The construction of the second retaining wall along with the excavation for the bridge pier and abutments will begin the first of August. Early winter is the anticipated timeframe for the installation of the bridge superstructure.
It appears that the project is a bit ahead of schedule and might finish before March 2018.

You can see the panels for the first retaining wall in the photo below.

The bridge for the project is scheduled to be installed this week. There were delays in the fabrication of the bridge.

Retaining walls have been finished and part of the trail has been paved on the south side of Holmes Run.

The bridge was installed today. Contractor thinks they will need four to six weeks to complete project.

Still not done. Ride the HR trail from the east and there's a "Sidewalk Closed" sign telling you to cross the street. There should have been additional signage telling trail users to go to Pegram and follow the High Water Detour. Being unfamiliar w/ the area & route I didn't know that the High Water Detour would get me back on the trail, so I bailed.

Same for me last week. Does anyone know the status of the bridge opening?

I talked to the City’s project manager late last week, she indicated at least three more weeks, weather permitting. While the bridge is mostly done, a portion of the railing alongside the trail was torn out by a wayward tree and will need to be replaced before the bridge can be opened.

The contractor has been significantly delayed in finishing the project due to the frequent rains. The rain or the threat of rain has not allowed the contractor to finish the stream bed restoration.

Further west, at the trail head at Morgan and Beauregard is yet another problem. The recent rains and high water flow have accelerated erosion underneath the trail at the last fair weather crossing along the Alexandria portion of the HRT.

The City has not begun addressing a fix to this problem. Riders wanting to go west will need to take the alternate trail entrance, just north of Morgan on Beauregard. (Note, the alternate is not fully paved until you reach the fair weather crossing.)
