Augh. You may want to get a tetanus shot after falling in there.

I saw these rocks when I wiped out and thought I was well to the left? The only logical explanation I can come up with is that there was a troll hiding there that threw one of them into my front wheel. This time I built an elaborate teak spirit house at the entrance and put bowls of rice and incense in it. Rode through both ways no problem.

You rode this? Looking at that broken up concrete... You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din.

That tunnel stuff is disgusting; I'd take a bath in a tub of sanitizer after going through that!

FYI, that tunnel also floods. I've had the misfortune of being on a hike that required me to pass through when there was 3-4 inches of water in the middle.

Alexandria commissioned a study last year on the Telegraph Road and Holmes Run Trail tunnels. Lots of pictures and recommendations on fixes, but meaningful fixes are probably years away.

Some recommendations - better maintenance, improved entrances and lighting and redoing the tunnels.

Interesting study. I love it when we pay a contractor to state the obvious "your tunnels suck".

That aside I wonder if I told the City of Alexandria about my wipe out if it would help make it a priority for better pedestrian and bicycle use? There's no way in hell I would go in that tunnel at night, its like a trap on the other side. I was riding with Ms. Anomad who said there's no way in hell she'd go in there at any time without me for protection.

I actually like the Holmes Run tunnels, they feel more adventurous than scary. I guess I haven't been through them many times though, if there were a bunch of gang bangers hanging around I would probably feel differently.

Wow! I've ridden by that tunnel like a dozen times on Mill Road and never noticed it's existence. Where the heck does it come out? Behind that Extra Space Storage building and up the sidewalk to Duke St?

The north end of the tunnel spits you out under the Telegraph Rd bridge just north of the railroad tracks. It then splits, so you can go east past the Extra Space Storage building towards Old Town or west along a sketchy fence towards Taylor Run Pkwy.

Yeah. The entry under the overpass has a set of stairs and a rusty railing. The whole area was significantly cleaned up sometime in the last year or two. It used to be the overgrown kind of place where you found mattresses and bags of who knows what strewn about. The lights inside used to not work. I thought it was an abandoned entrance to the sewer or some service thing to the railway for a long time till I discovered the south side entrance and connected them together in my mind*. I've yet to actually go through it.

There is a gloomily shaded trail hemmed in between the off-ramp hill and a fence going west over lightly heaving sidewalk, curving towards the animal hospital. It's long and remote enough that anybody walking through it is out of sight and earshot of any civilization. A not insignificant little hill goes up the east side along the wall of the Storage building.

I live across Duke on the north side of that tunnel. One Sunday morning I went to see a movie at Hoffman with Mrs. Studygroup and I suggested we walk home through the tunnel since it's a significant shortcut. We walked up to it and as soon as she saw the entrance she refused to get closer, and after some insisting from me, started crying from fear. We took the long way back. That is powerful access infrastructure haha.
