    Default 2017 Biking Goals

2016 is drawing to and end and I've been reflecting on the past year of biking. It was a great year on a bike for me. Some of the highlights:

    Participated in Freezing Saddles
    Bike my first century
Had so much fun riding my first century that I rode 12 more in 9 states and the District of Columbia
    Started a coffee club
    Biked across Iowa in RAGBRAI
    Biked over 10,000 miles
Volunteered to help build the Alexandria Bicycle Campus
Spent 737 hours pedaling, the equivalent of biking non-stop for an entire month
Enjoyed more sunrises and sunsets than in the previous 36 years of my life combined
    Biked to Baltimore
    Biked to Annapolis
    Marshalled the Arlington Fun Ride
Followed Ian Fingerman's advice about making friends, "Everyone here likes bikes, just talk about bikes." Talked about bikes, made lots of friends.
Biked the Delaware & Raritan Canal, which was beautiful.
Instigated some great group rides (Mason Neck, Indian Head, Christmas lights, Great Falls) Tricked Komorebi into doing the route planning for most of them.
Spent a whole lot of time riding with my biking soul mates, Komorebi and LeprosyStudyGroup (7.8 days with Komorebi this year and 4.2 days with LSG according to Strava Roster)
Spelled out "Shue Sucks" in a parking lot at the Pentagon

    2017 Goals
    Bike the entire C&O
    Centuries in 5 more states
    Attend Bicycle Advisory Committee Meetings
    RAGBRAI again
Do all of my own bike maintenance
Volunteer at more events (DC Bike Ride, Air Force Classic, WABA Rides)
    Ride 11,000 miles in 2017
    Stop and take more pictures
    Finish the fixed gear project
    Try bikepacking

I'm curious about what other people's bike highlights were in 2016 and what you aspire for in 2017.

    2016 highlights:
    - Accompanying my wife on her first organized ride (Seagull metric century, which I did fixed)
    - Hearing "we thought she didn't know what biking was" from my daughter's camp counselor at hearing we biked from DC to Alexandria to get the bus
    - Crushing my previous mileage total for Freezing Saddles
    - Watching the number of families biking to the kids' school explode and knowing that I helped inspire many of them
    - Getting caught in a really cold rainstorm we totally weren't prepared for and the kids owning it and having fun anyway

    2017 goals:
    - More rides with friends
    - Organize a fundraising ride for Trash Free Maryland (you all are invited)
    - More family rides when the kids are on their own bikes
    - Stretch goal - I've biked to every property that I manage EXCEPT the one in Pikesville MD. I should fix that.

    2016:
-Rode with my family (wife's first riding in 10 years or so, and my older kid learned to bike - and I promptly took him on 20 mile deathmarch which hasn't been repeated).
-PRs on various climbs I've done before, felt like I was off the pace on those rides but good to know I have actually improved despite less mileage/ageing/beer/etc.
-closer to have better/fuller bike kit wardrobe
-bought first set of crabon wheels. whoooosh!

    2017 Goals:
-Buy a crabon crankset and 'gram it.
-More srsly, just get over various injuries from 2016, and learn to handle bike better/more confidently.

    2016 Highlights:
    • Bikepacked at the GW National Forest on some ridiculously hard trails and froze my butt off at night
    • Gave in and finally got a full suspension bike, rediscovering comfort and speed on rocky trails, after primarily mountain biking rigid singlespeed for the last 15 years.
    • Got over a 37" log
    • Beat some of my faster buddies at the Single Speed USA race in stupid hot conditions
    • Won the Fat Bike category at Wakefield @ Wednesday race series (nevermind that there were hardly any - or no - competitors in some of them )
    • Got up a tight switchback at Wakefield, inspiring others to try, but not sure anyone else has been successful

    2017 Goals:

    2016:
    - Was way too lazy, but did cycle in several new (to me) countries.
    - Extended my string of consecutive months with at lest one ride of 100 miles to 72.

    2017:
    - Get off my lazy butt and ride more.
    - Continue my century-a-month string.
