Did anybody sense a disturbance in the force this morning about 0815?
I rode Crystal Drive southbound from 18th Street and didn't encounter any autos in the bike lane. I'm not sure what is going on.

No pics yet, but watch for mud and debris on creek-side trails, esp. Four Mile Run. This is just down stream of Mt. Vernon Blvd bridge.

Once again two warning signs for east bound drivers on S Glebe Rd were blocking over half the width of the 4MRT by the Long Branch bridge (9/11 about 12:30 pm). I didn't bother to Lumberjack them this time.
It might be good for the County to look at their policies for those types of signs. The sign in question could have gone up 50 yards further west on the grass.
The crew putting it up declined to show the MOT or identify the project they were putting up the signs for when I spoke with them.
As of today, PG Parks/M-NCPPC are still inspecting trails for damage following Thursday's storm. I've seen several bridges that appeared damaged from the flooding/debris.
PG Parks/M-NCPPC posted the following advisory yesterday closing all trails in the Anacostia River Trail system:
All trails in the Anacostia River Trail system are CLOSED until safety inspections can be completed

From Facebook's MVT Trail Users Group:
Just a head up that some...very special...person posted on Nextdoor in my area that they will be open carrying a firearm on the MVT this Saturday at 10:00 for a gun rights protest walk that starts near the Dyke Marsh, South of Alexandria just near Belle Haven (around mile 4 or 5 I think). He is trying to enlist other...special people...to walk with him.
It’s perfectly legal in VA and on National Park land.
Just a heads up, in case you run across them!
A few other posters responded that they knew of this specific individual, and he was known to be very confrontational. So please, regardless of your political views on this, stay safe and don't confront.
There is an Alexandria Public Art Ride going that Saturday morning. https://www.facebook.com/events/235704787858843/
I am hoping like hell none of the three ride groups will cross paths with them (I am with Judd's 8:30 group).

Updates from PG Parks - The W. Hyattsville bridge will be closed for sevral months & the bridge at Riverdale Road will be closed for up to 1 year:
Anacostia Tributary Trail System
Following several days of heavy rain and regional flooding on September 10th, 2020, the Department of Parks and Recreation reports the following closures and precautions:
West Hyattsville: The bridge on a spur trail that links Chillum Road to the West Hyattsville Metro Station and Northwest Branch Trail was badly damaged and will need to be replaced. This closure may last for several months as repairs take place.
Riverdale Park: A bridge on the Northeast Branch Trail was damaged and will need to be replaced. The bridge spans the Wells Branch, a feeder stream that is located just north of Riverdale Road. It may take up to 12 months to replace this bridge. Detour signs will be posted on a route through the Town of Riverdale Park.
For additional details, please refer to the attached map.
Signs, signals, and markings- the Custis/Bon Air traffic circle, with road markings. What I didn't shoot were the nicely scaled traffic circle signs.

Work is progressing on the cycle track on 4th Street NW & SW across the Mall.
The District seems to be continually beefing up the barriers between the track and the traffic.
I typically travel on the part of 4th Street north of M once a week. When I was there last Monday, I noticed that there were indeed several vehicles blocking parts of the lane. If they install more barriers, it should help. It also may help if they just paint a bike logo every block. It is possible that some of the cars blocking just don't realize it is now for bikes. I am concerned that the construction vehicles on the east side of the block between G and I will tear it up again.
I miss living in SW DC. Love the new bike lane up 4th st! Looks wonderful.
Another W&OD detour https://twitter.com/WODTrail/status/1310619472672284672
Starting on or around October 5th, Dominion Energy will begin performing major line work along the trail between Sandburg St and Gallows Rd in the Dunn Loring area. The construction is expected to continue well into next year and will require a detour of the trail onto Iliff Dr.
Some shots from today. Work was occurring, apparently to lower the utility boxes to grade. As can be seen, the turn for the current detour continues to challenge the construction team (and their vehicles) as well as cyclists.

The second photo show the geometry failure. Instead of having cyclists heading east executing a 90 degree left turn with a clean (straight) exit entering the underpass under I-66, the current approach is going about 135 degrees around the circle and then a right turn off the trail to the underpass. For that right turn, cyclists would need to avoid the fire hydrant.
I fear my concerns will play out when the underpass reopens.
Did they also build an extension along Gallows? That seems more important than Sandburg. I can see from the tweet that they have made a bike lane along Iliff and put every bollard in northern VA to use.
Edit: Never mind. It is all explained here https://www.novaparks.com/parks/wash...sandburg-st-to.
Nope- Gallows is still pretty garbagey as far as bike lanes go. It’s such a missed opportunity to build and “urban style mixed use development” in Merrifield, but not have the urban multi-modal connectivity to make it really engaging and vibrant. Who else loves crossing 29 by bike??? [emoji43]
For those who haven't been out the W&OD, be advised that the bike/ped overpass is progressing nicely. VDOT says the bridge (less landscaping and improvements below the bridge) will be done in Fall 2020.

PG Parks reopened the bridge on the NE Branch of the Anacostia Tributary Trail in Riverdale Park. Thank you to Greenbelt for the update.
Neighbors said the reason PG Parks estimated it would take up to a year to replace the bridge was from plans to replace it with a design that would be less prone to future flood damage and to have it connect at street level.
I'm happy that it's reopened and hopeful we'll see a better bridge in a year or so.
I just went through here this past weekend and this detour really frustrates me. The detour path is actually really good, clearly separated from traffic with dense flex posts, and properly marked. If this can be put down for a utility project in little time without complaint, I can't understand why this can't be built on every road to this standard where right of way exists. Seriously, this detour shows how much the development process is broken and takes way too long.
