About Henry
- Biography:
- Henry Dunbar is the Director of Active Transportation for Arlington County Commuter Services, and oversees the BikeArlington, WalkArlington, and Capital Bikeshare programs (in Arlington).
Henry came to ACCS in September 2014 after leading Phoenix Bikes for 2 1/2 years. He has more than 31 years of professional experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and communications; journalism; and freelance writing. He worked for more than 11 years in the national office of Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., the last two as director of strategic communications. He has lived in South Arlington for 30 years with his wife and three children. He is an avid cyclist having commuted by bicycle for several years, and has competed in scores of bike races, triathlons, and marathons. He is extremely involved in Arlington civic activities, including three years as president of the Douglas Park Civic Association, and has been a dedicated election precinct poll worker since 2008.
Henry grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, where his father was stationed in the Air Force. He served three years in the U.S. Marines after high school, before returning home to earn a BA in Journalism from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1988 to work as an assistant press secretary for U.S. Senator Ted Stevens. Henry also earned an MA in Public Communications from American University in 1994.
