Lost Dog Rescue...

I mentioned this an era's ago - and it never came to fruition. Well now is the grand opportunity.

Lost Dog Rescue is Arlington's own dog rescue group, started by the owners of Lost Dog Cafe. They have ~10 adoption events per weekend and adopt out ~50 dogs per week. They get dogs from crisis situations such as kill shelters, puppy mills, and other disasters. We have been working with Lost Dog for about a decade. The dog in some of my pictures was adopted in 2002 and is the best damn dog ever!

Volunteering is easy. The adoption events are at Petsmart and Petco. Lost Dog brings ~20 dogs from 'the ranch' (where they have about 150 dogs.... and some goats). The event is 3 hours long. Your job is to, well, have fun with the dog, show it off, play with it.... almost like the Dog Show at madison garden. You win if your dog gets adopted.

It's fun. It's rewarding. The dogs are delightful. And maybe you might even cave and become a foster parent!!!!!

So here's the deal. We are working the Lost Dog Sterling event this saturday.... which is right on the WOD. We have room for 4 bikes total on the van (my wife is driving. doesnt bike. it happens). We could drive out to Sterling, do the adoption event, and then bike back on the WOD - a nice ~23 miles back to Ballston area, or wherever.

If you would be interested, we should touch base with the volunteer coordinator at Lost Dog. Also, this may become a someone regular occurrence, so if you are interested but not this weekend - there will be another chance.

Allegheny Passage - contemplating straight through ride from Pittsburgh to DC

Now that the route to Pittsburgh is essentially complete (http://www.thegreatalleghenypassage.com/), it goes on my list of rides to do.

If I can...

Now that the route to Pittsburgh is essentially complete, it goes on my list of rides to do.

If I can find a weekend later this summer or, more likely, in the early Fall - I'd like to do the ride either as a straight through 24-30 hour ride, or split up as a pair of 165-milers. Trail riding, especially on the C&O, will bring average speed way down, but I think with minimal stops, 30 hours is a reasonable target. Heck, some PBP riders pull off 750 miles in 55-60 hours.

I think the ideal plan would be to sort out how to get the bike on the Amtrak train up to Pittsburgh. Get in around 11PM/midnight, find a place to stay, then start the ride early the next morning.

Riding out to Pittsburgh would also be an option but I'd rather deal with travel logistics before the ride than after.

Save the dates! There are two great rides coming up on the weekend of May 25 and 26. -Jeff PS, I'll post details on this thread once we get through Bike to Work day!

First, on May 25 Maryland Milestones (aka Anacostia Trials Heritage Area) is hosting their annual Rivers to Rockets ride. We'll start just down the street from Proteus at Duvall Park (by Rhode Island Ave), tour the scenic Anacostia Tributary trails, visit the Hyattsville Arts District, Magruder Park, and the Bladensburg marina, before heading back north via College Park and the scenic Paint Branch Trail. Here is the route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2115157

Meetup is at 10am, and lunch will be provide at Magruder Park. I'll provide registration info in a few days (there is a fee). PS, I'm leading this ride, and we'll take a moderate, family friendly pace.

Size:	101.9 KB
ID:	2840" class="thumbnail" style="float:CONFIG" />

The video below shows a pretty good idea of riding conditions (basically excellent) on the Anacostia Tributary trails we'll be taking.

Second, on the following day, Sunday May 26, the Greenbelt Museum is hosting its first ever "Roosevelt Ride", starting at 11am. I don't have the route, but I think it will be a very easy social ride around old Greenbelt with a picnic to follow. Here's the link: http://greenbeltmuseum.org/2013/03/2...oosevelt-ride/ and more information to follow!

This ride will feature the area's art-deco buildings and houses. PS. The Greenbelt Museum and farmers market are worth the trips in themselves, even if you're not riding.

A few weeks ago Dirt and I started up an after-work casual MTB ride at Lake Fairfax. For those who don't know it, Lake Fairfax is a park in Reston that has several miles of natural surface trails.

Trail info:
http://www.logoffrideon.com/trails/i...e=Lake_Fairfax

We meet at the Ice Rink, which is right off the W&OD at Michael Faraday Drive, at 6:30pm and ride for 75-90 minutes or so, finishing up right at dark. Loops have been ~7 miles, hitting most of the stuff in the park at a fairly relaxed pace. The trails there are relatively easy in MTB terms, with the occasional log and pile of rocks, but mostly pretty newb friendly. We go at a casual pace (both Dirt and I are experienced ride leaders and we're out there to have fun, not do a punishing training ride or anything).

We've been promoting it at the usual MTB destinations (MORE, Facebook), but I thought I'd let folks here know as well. If anyone wants to give mountainbiking a try, this would be a great ride to do so on!

This Saturday, I'm riding up to Baltimore early in the morning to catch the beginning of this year's Kinetic Sculpture Race at the Visionary Arts Museum. Departure from Proteus bike shop at 7am sharp! I'll probably average about 14 or 15 mph -- so a decent pace but not necessarily a speed crush or anything -- with a potty stop halfway. It's a surprisingly awesome ride, one of my favorites. Scenic, low traffic, for the most part. There's some rough pavement in Baltimore city, so bring an extra tube or two.

Here are some photos from last year. This is an event not to be missed if you don't have plans for Saturday. -Jeff

I wanted to give an amazing thank you for everyone who rode and contributed to the ride. We raised THOUSANDS for World Bicycle Relief and we very thoroughly killed Bill. Special thanks to those who came out to cheer us on. It really helped to see the signs that Bob painted on the road and see him at Mile 50. We got to wave at vicegrip's family early on at the ride. Consularrider was putting that cowbell and vuvuzela to good use the two times we past him. Americancyclo's wife and daughter were out to cheer us on at mile 101. We even met up with virtually the entire Bikenetic shop crew along Sleepy Hollow as they were heading out for a round of golf.

The Starters
The Finishers

The Gang in Action

We started with 18 riders and managed to get 10 through the whole ride and to the finish. MegaBeth was AWESOME to join us at Barcroft and ride with us to the end. Everyone really came prepared for the ride... they brought their A-Game and accomplished what they set out to.

Highlights of the day....

Overcoming adversity... like Troy.

Hans' KOM on Jay Miller still has me confounded!!!

George riding the first 26 miles fixie and Yueqing riding the first 46 on his single speed. They didn't just ride... they rode WELL!

The biggest highlight for me was the way the whole group worked together... taking turns leading, sweeping and keeping the group together throughout the whole ride. Without EVERYONE's contributions, this wouldn't have gone nearly as well as it did.

Thank you all very much!

Have a great week! You earned it.

Pete

I live near the 100 km mark of this ride, so if anyone wants to stop by on Sunday, April 28 (tomorrow) from noon to whenever in hopes of seeing the group go by twice, feel free. I'm close to the Ohio Street access to the W@OD at N Montana St and N Four Mile Run Dr. Bring your picnic, cowbells, and vuvuzela and sit on my front lawn. I'll have water and a couple other things for the riders. Send me a message and I'll send the exact address and phone number.
