In all this talk of "what bike to get", there's often an issue of tradeoffs between speed and weight, rider position and tire size (I feel like I'm missing one). Does anyone know of a scientific comparison of those issues? E.g. all else equal, 10 additional lbs on the bike requires 20% more effort to go the same speed. Or going from skinny to fat tires requires 10% more effort to go the same speed, all else equal.

Does that make sense? I want to suggest my brother-in-law, who's studying aerospace engineering, do this as a project, but if it's already out there...

My colleague is doing some spring cleaning and has a 1984 Nishiki to part with. Hasn't been ridden in at least a decade so it obviously would need some work, but am I mistaken that people like those frames for a project bike? Would it be worth the effort to try to sell it, or should she just let the building maintenance people dispense with it when they clean out the abandoned bikes?

Thanks.

I wandered into REI the other day, and thought I'd browse the bikes. They had a Novarra, I think it was a "Transfer" model, on clearance - listed at, could it have been 799? And marked down to $360. Didn't have time to really test it out for fit. The guy there came up and asked me what I was looking for, and I told him about wanting to commute, but maybe something also to take out on weekend rides ( I picked the bike up and noted that it seemed not much lighter than my MTB, and he confirmed it was about 30 lbs) - so he showed me some non-clearance models "that would be good for both" - they were $1000 plus road bikes with drop handles, that had some commuter features, I guess.

Of course those are not in the price range Im considering (I have been leaning towards used bikes in the 250 to 400 range).

I understand upselling is part of the game, but this made my wary of shopping for a bike (as opposed to say, clothes) at REI.

Your thoughts?

So, this weekend I was convinced* of the utility of having a real GPS for backcountry non-biking adventures. My question is whether I can effectively use an Edge 510 or 810 mapping unit with non-biking activities. Looking at their site it doesn't look like the topos are pre-loaded, but that you can load them. Has anyone tried this? Obviously, it will tell me where I am and backtrack fine, but backcountry gps use generally involves setting specific waypoints for access or key destinations rather than just a "track." I also like the idea of the "live tracking" through Garmin connect- I assume that it could be used to find me if I were in trouble (unless it's cell based, which isn't clear.)

I've been resisting a Garmin, relying instead on a iPhone app and ANT+ sensor set, but both of my sensor pods have died and the accuracy of the phone gps isn't great around here- in WV, it's useless. Still, I don't want to plunk down that sort of cash unless it solves a few of my problems.

*A 3-hour off-piste waterfall hunt trip in Otter Creek Wilderness in WV turned into a 7 hour bushwhacking epic. Although we were never "lost," my buddy having a high-end GPS probably saved another 2-3 of flailing through rhododendron. LINK to awesome and rarely seen Coal Run waterfall- may be the highest in WV and it's very very hard to get to.

So, I've gotten in the habit of tossing salvageable punctured tubes in a bin with the intention of patching them... I haven't actually done that and counted 18 tubes (ranging from 24" unicycle to 26" MTB to 700cc 22s and 28s) waiting for tender ministrations. With Bontrager tubes $7/each even when you buy three I'm looking at a pile of black gold.

Rema has 100 unit cases for ~$20 on Amazon but even with my ridiculous record with punctures and built up tube stock I really don't need 100 and hate waste. If anyone want's in, PM me.

Hi All,
I'm going to purchase a bike soon and really want to get some tips from you pros/more experienced riders.

So I had a great trek that I got as a gift but was stolen about 4 or 5 years ago. Because I wasn't riding that bike that much, when I did want a new bike I just went for a $150 Huffy from walmart. It has served its original purpose just fine but I really want to amp up my bicycling and am participating in my first Triathlon in August (yay!). I know for sure that I don't want to ride this Huffy for 17 miles and have already experienced how hard it is to get up a hill on that thing just going the 3 miles to work.

So basically I'm hoping you all may have some good insights on what type of bike to invest in. I would like to use it to ride to and from work occasionally, but then also for my triathlon and hopefully more races in the future, and of course just regular weekend rides. I don't want to invest in a Tri bike because they are way over my budget from what I've seen, but I also don't think I would want to use a bike that nice to go to and from work.

Any thoughts? Is this even possible?

Other side notes in case case it helps. I'm a female - 5" 3' but my arms and legs are really long in comparison to what they should be for my height. I'm willing to look at older/used bikes but being a novice just don't really know what I'm looking for overall. I do plan to change the pedals so I can clip in. I'm hoping to spend under $1,000.

I don't know all these different bike options!! Touring, commuter, etc etc. Any suggestions on bikes, shops... would be much appreciated!

Have so far been using a hybrid, but want to ride more days, having a wet weather/ dry weather bike seems like a good idea. Is Apex worth it over 105?

FEDS BREAK WEBSITES SELLING FAKE HIGH-END CYCLING GEAR & CLOTHING. The Houston Press (4/30, Connelly) reports, "The Homeland Securities Investigation office in Houston announced today they'd shut down 10 websites for selling fake bike equipment like high-end carbon frames and clothing." The counterfeit items "carried the brand names of SRAM, Cervelo, Pinarello, Specialized and INVISTA."

The Humble (TX) Observer (4/30, 12K) reports, "Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) seized 10 Internet domain names that were illegally selling trademarked cycling equipment and apparel globally. The 10 seized domain names are a continuation of "Operation In Our Sites" (IOS), an HSI sustained law enforcement initiative that began in 2010. The seized domain names are now in the custody of the U.S. government." Regarding the operation, Brian M. Moskowitz, special agent in charge of HSI Houston, stated, "The seizure of these domain names is an important tool in HSI's continuing efforts to protect the consumer from sub-par and dangerous goods. ... HSI special agents are also committed to protecting the rights of businesses that play by the rules so that they can remain competitive and support our economy."

KTRK-TV Houston (4/30) reports, "Officials say they also identified PayPal accounts used by the infringing websites and atargeted more than $90,000 in proceeds received through those accounts."
Also reporting on the story is the Atascocita (TX) Observer (4/30).
