Hello arlington and rest of world. I love my bicycle and love arlington's commitment to cycling. I would (and have) commute via bicycle if i could, but I'd venture to bet that the average DC metro commute is something disgusting, hence SOOOOOOOO many cars on the road, and probably why we even know about the air quality codes (such a shame).

If anyone's down for a ride (once I get recoup my stolen bike or get a new one) i'm totally game. I love mountain biking, and HAD a sweet customized 29er (Haro Mary XC)

Autumn may not quite be in the air yet, but the daylight hours are definitely coming later and later. I really noticed it a lot on this morning. I didn't hit what I would call "dawn" until I was almost to Rosslyn. That brings up a great topic -- visibility!

It doesn't take a lot of reflective stuff to be seen by cars and other cyclists. Not sure if you can have too much reflective gear though. Be careful.

I really noticed that walkers and runners have not noticed the change of daylight status. I encountered at least a dozen ninjas (invisible people lacking any reflective gear... many wearing dark clothes) and their ninja dogs.

In true-to-me form, I used to get upset at this. Now I just stop and offer them some reflective gear. I always try to keep 3 or 4 spare reflective leg/arm bands on my rig that I can hand out to the local ninjas. I buy a stack every payday in the fall from a local bike shop. I also pick up a reflective dog leash or two if I notice some regulars with unreflective canines.

Most people are pretty receptive to having some reflective gifts. A few have gotten angry and yelled at me. I try to reply with a smile, but have at times suggested that many decaffeinated brands taste as good as the real thing.

Be safe out there. :D

Thursday, September 16, 2010 – Saturday, September 18, 2010

We are preparing for the final volunteer bicycle and pedestrian count of 2010 in beautiful mid-September Arlington. This is the biggest annual count event, involving communities all across the country. The combined results improve our understanding of walking and cycling patterns and demand, and help evaluate the success of encouraging, planning, and engineering for active transportation.

Please join us on Thursday, September 16th and / or Saturday, September 18th … and we won’t ask again for an entire year!

The results you have already collected helped convince the County Board that bicycle and pedestrian transportation should be taken seriously, and counted regularly. The Board in turn authorized a significant investment in automated count equipment. The automatic counters will do a great job day and night, in rain, snow, heat and humidity, all year round, at locations across the county. They help establish an invaluable baseline of data, but will never replace the eyes and ears of human observers.

To help conclude the count year with a sell-out event, please email bikepedcounts@arlingtonva.us with your preferred times and locations.

Just discovered the forum when trying to pay business taxes online, great stuff!

I saw the thread on getting a ticket for the red light thing and thought it might be useful to ask if the police are as quick to aid our safety as it concerns pedestrians in the bike lanes and in the roadways in general. Etiquette on the multi-use trails is an important thing, but when cars, bikes, and pedestrians are regulated by law it seems the pedestrians are left out of the equation.

Not to be too much of a curmudgeon, but both state and county law clearly state that bike lanes are for the exclusive use of bicycles and that pedestrians (which includes joggers and baby strollers) are not to be in the roadway at all unless there are no sidewalks available. You'd be hard pressed to find any stretch of road in Arlington without at least one side with a sidewalk.

I've had far more trouble with pedestrians in the bike lanes than cars/doors and would like to know if the county police would be amenable to ticketing pedestrians they see violating this law.

Hope it wasn't too enflaming and apologies to our wonderful PD if my anecdotal experience is completely and utterly refutable :)

Is there any rhyme nor reason to those green Bicycle Trail signs?

I was trying out one of the "loops" and saw several of the signs, but most of them didn't have arrows or anything else. If I weren't holding a piece of paper telling me which streets to turn at I would never have figured it out.

Any suggestions for using the bike routes?
