Highlights
•Bicyclists demonstrated weaker lateral stability for buses or longer passing times and smaller lateral distances for motorcycles.
•A longitudinal solid line facilitates better lateral distance, wheel angle, and speed control.
•Gender differences appeared in lateral control.
•Bicyclists’ behaviors affected the motorists’ passing decisions.

Hi all-
I'm hoping the collective wisdom can help. My brother is coming to town this afternoon and I want to take him for a bike ride including drinks and casual dinner. Thinking of the Arlington loop from clockwise starting on the Custis around Glebe Road and stopping in Alexandria to eat/drink. Does anyone have a suggestion for a place we can go in our biking clothes where we can ideally also keep an eye on the bikes?
Thanks!

I need to make up the loss of Bike DC to my grandsons. They both got new bikes for Krimis and were really looking forward to the ride again this year until it's ignominious demise. I didn't think I would be able to attend on 1 June but now it's an option. The New Belgium website has a cutesy video of the bike parade apparently thru the nearby streets before the real party starts I suspect. I haven't been to this event myself so I must ask : on a scale of family friendly to drunken bacchanal where does Tour de Fat fall for an eleven year old and a 13 year old to attend?

(Not necessarily bike-related, but... well, read on.)

I occasionally read online reviews for running shoes, in my never-ending quest to find the perfect running shoe for me (if that exists). I like the lightweight Saucony Hattori shoes. Very light. Zero drop. Velcro straps instead of annoying laces. Only problem is that the seams between the uppers and the soles are located about 1/4" away from the sides, that is, on the sole itself. On longer runs, this starts to chafe my little toe.

I have Pearl Izumi isoTransitions, which are nice for longer runs. They are a little heavier but still lightweight. They don't have the seam on the insole, so no chafing. But they have a 4mm drop (from heel to toe).

So I'm looking for a zero-drop shoe that doesn't have the seams on the insole or a high in-step (like all Nike models and many other shoes, including the Saucony Kinvara). When I see a promising candidate, I check out reviews and I look at the shoe fit on Running Warehouse.

I heard about a new shoe from New Balance. Looks promising. Found a review of the shoe. Seemed solidly written and informative. I looked at the author's name. Tim Kelley. Hmm, that's funny. There's a guy in Arlington by that name. Oh wait a minute. That's the same Tim Kelley.

Hello,

My name is Adam Trowell located in Washington D.C I am currently a GMU Marketing Major, entrepreneur and an aspiring designer. With the summer season quickly approaching, hot days and warm nights ahead I have spent the past few months designing and creating a fully reflective tank top especially designed for cyclists, joggers, walkers and all who want to be seen both stylishly and safely while outdoors this summer season. I am literally all in on this project and my goal is to earn the support of atleast 125 backers to be able to deliver an initial production run of reflective digital camo tank tops. I have launched my project via Kickstarter a crowdfunding platform with a funding period between 5/17 ending 6/16.

Over the next week I will visit as many bicycle and running shops in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area dropping off flyers in hopes of receiving the support of the cycling and jogging community in particular. Being safe and seen at night is always at the forefront I believe there is significant value in a fully reflective tank top and I hope you feel the same enough to offer your support whether that be backing the project, sharing the project or both!

Please check out both the project link below and my website which is a combination of my first manufactured item and custom footwear that I also create myself known in the sneaker community by the alias "theMenace". I am also holding a footwear giveaway in relation to the kickstarter project of which details can be found on my website as well.

Four years ago my physician noticed I had a murmur during a regular check-up. A quick ECG showed some abnormal readings and I was referred to a cardiologist. Not a surprise considering almost all the males on my father's side have some sort of heart condition. My father, a fit non-smoker and childhood athlete has had two heart attacks, a quadruple bi-pass, and just this week a cutting edge quadruple angioplasty....it is in our genes. When I first met my specialist I was a little concerned to hear the words "abnormal" and "congenital". Turns out I was born with a Bicuspid Aortic valve. The fact that it had gone undetected was shocking, but there it was... a faulty valve that helped explain my many failures with endurance sports. At best the valve would last another 10 - 15 years before it would need replacing, however considering my family history with heart disease and my own elevated cholesterol it would probably last another 5 - 8....that was 4 years ago. Once a year since that day I am subjected to a bout of tests; CT scans, Echocardiograms, stress tests, blood-work, etc and every year I have managed to extend the life of my valve. Medications aside, I am convinced cycling is the reason. This year has been my most dedicated in terms of hours in the saddle and miles ridden and the results from last week's tests seem to confirm my beliefs.

For the first time in four years my blood-work was normal...I AM AVERAGE...YES! Even better, my valve has not worsened at all during the year. As long as I keep extending it's life, I keep extending mine.

I can't think of anything else that is so good for you yet so much fun...as if eating pizza would cure all illness!

Anyway, I am in a great mood and wanted to share this with you all, since you are like an extended family on two wheels.

- Cheers

A buddy of mine is joining me after work at my shop in Fairfax for some riding. He's pretty new to cycling and looking to get about 30 flat training miles in starting around 5:00. I am usually heading east on the W&OD at that time, but figured I would take him west instead. Any thoughts on some good Fairfax loops preferably not in too much traffic? We'll be starting near the new Mosaic district (Merrifield). I thought about just taking the W&OD out west but I am not sure how crowded it gets out that way.

I wonder, though, if it jumped the shark a bit when it equated bike lanes and nazis.

I think there's an everlasting tension between the inherent safety of the facilities themselves and the safety that results from increased bicycle mode share. Both arguments are right in different ways, so what's left is picking one or the other for purely emotional reasons.
