The Washington, D.C. area has great networks of trails and on-street routes. Figure out a new commuting route or find some ideas for a recreational ride.

I'm planning to do a little climbing in the Shenandoah before the Jeremiah Bishop Gran Fondo this Septermber and I was contemplating a loop out near Route 33 Spotswood Trail. Has anyone ridden up Beldor Rd? I can route all the way up to Skyline on ridewithGPS but I'm concerned it might be a 2.2 miles of hike-a-bike with 700 ft of elevation. I'm not currently running anything larger than a 25c, so it would be nice to know if it's more of a gravel grinder fire road, or a bumpy, log ridden uphill MTB slog.
Thanks!

I regularly commute home on the L street bikelane and make a right turn onto 15th street. What is the proper way to make this turn (right turn from a left hand lane to a right hand lane)? If the light on L St is green, I usually inch up until I am at the crosswalk, and then cross with the light onto 15th street. However, this annoys bikes behind me who want to go straight, since I block the bikelane. It is hard to get to the right or left because there are car lanes on either side. Any suggestions? I hate pissing off other bikers!

Thinking of riding from the Southwest library to the Job corps. I don't like where Google maps, HopStop and Flatroute finder are telling me to go: after crossing South Capitol Street bridge to stay on South Capitol Street & turn onto MLK. I think that part of S.Cap street by the BAFB is for cars only, last time I drove it I remember reaching highway before even getting close to getting on 295.

I'm thinking to go straight to MLK from S.Cap street and take MLK all the way over. Has anyone biked this area before that can throw some experienced insight my way.

Friends from out of town with bikes are staying on 5100 block of MacArthur Blvd. and can't find a suitable connection to the bike trail from there. They aren't able to carry their bikes down stairs or rough trail and not comfortable in heavy traffic. Does anyone know the easiest way for them to get on the trails? What's the best way to go if they want to ride into the city?

Does anyone have ideas for a weekend trip 100% by bike, leaving from DC or from metro/bus?

Ones already on my list are the WO&D to Leesburg or Purcellville, C&O to Harpers Ferry, and Annapolis (leaving from the Metro bus to BWI, taking the BWI and Baltimore & Annapolis trails).

The ideal parameters would be riding on bike paths and/or relatively bicycle-friendly roads; between 20 and 60 miles one-way; overnight in an area different from the city, preferably with a little history, sites, or landscapes; and ability to stay in a hotel (versus camping). However, I'm curious to hear ideas that don't fit all these parameters.

Hi all -- We are planning to move to the area south of the beltway, potentially near Huntington Metro station or Groveton. The plan is drop off the kids (via trailer) at Jefferson Manor Park in the morning and then head north to Crystal City to work myself. We're moving from the Van Ness area of DC, so I'm not familiar with Southern Alexandria at all. I've done a bit of map and field research and it appears that one of the major chokepoints down there is actually finding a way to cross the beltway. Telegraph Road is out of the question, from what I can gather, and heading east to catch the Mt. Vernon trail would be doable, but would lead me further far east than I would like. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?
Thanks,
