So, by now, I have spoken to all of the Team Captains/Acting Captains/Persons in Charge of Stuff for each team that is missing members.

I think that we will set a deadline for Thursday at 1700 (one week from team announcements) for the missing teammates to join their Team's Strava page and authorize the FS app. At that point, unless there are extenuating circumstances, they will be ostracized forever and a replacement will be made to take their place.

If anyone has any concerns or suggestions, feel free to leave them here. ;)

My wife's team is missing a lot (team 12) she has a friend who is interested. It would be a good fit. Can I pm you his info.

Does this friend have something in common with a... doorbell...so to speak? If so, it sounds like he would be a perfect fit for team 12. :)

A friend from our National Bike Challenge team, Bob James, wants to be sure he's on thee waiting list. He joined the forum, user name Bob James, strava#5637862, but doesn't have permission to post on threads which seems odd but one of my teammates also was denied permission. Anyway, he wants to play. He registered late, January 7. Hopefully you can find a spot for him! Thanks!

Our team is short one member and I'm pretty sure that Subby has reached out to those who aren't yet on the leaderboard.

I didn't have permission to post until a couple days ago. Just email the mod; they helped me out within an hour or so.

Yep, please do. Include his email address and strava number. And make sure he signs up for the forum, too. :)

Yep, he reached out to me, so he is just waiting on team assignment. Thanks!

If you need more subs to even the teams, I can probably get the hubs to play. Or maybe my 3yo, who requested that I for a run while he rode his bike for his special Mommy/Son time THIS MORNING.

Also willing to volunteer myself as a potential substitute. (I will not hound or beg -- my own fault for missing sign up as I am new to the board! I'll be prompt next year.)

Okay… I am calling it (yes, a bit early, I have packing and riding to do)! Anyone that signed up, was placed on a team, but failed to commit (by joining their team’s Strava group) is hereby officially cut and should be heckled relentlessly for the rest of their days.

I would like to officially welcome The Replacements:
Team 2: sszibler
Team 3: notinthe18
Team 4: coffeeneur
Team 6: Karen B
Team 7: mborbacs23
Team 9: rosato
Team 11: Bob James
Team 12: skibumleg
Team 14: Terpfan
Team 15: MrRodgers82

There were eight teams that were actually missing a teammate. Only seven of those teams got replacements (the last one is doing just fine on their own, so I do not think being a man down is going to be a disadvantage to them). There were three teams in the bottom 50% that were only assigned 12 members.

That equals 10 teams that “needed” a new member and I had 10 confirmed replacements ready to go. They have been assigned based on their estimated weekly mileage (lowest ranked team got highest mileage person, etc.).

Unfortunately, there are three local teams that now have non “local” riders (one DC team and two MD teams). Sorry (not sorry).

The new members have been sent an email with instructions and links to their respective team Strava groups with the instructions to join up. If team captains have set their group to invite only, please let me know so that I can give you your new teammate’s Strava ID or email address.

I tried to make the replacement assignments as fair as possible, but since there were several high mileage people that wanted in, things might get a little competitive from here on out. It will be fun. So get out and ride your bike.

If there are questions/concerns, I will address them after you have bought me a beer.

A little competitive would be nice!

One has no rides yet and one is out with a broken thumb. Just sayin'.

Yay! Before I even had a chance to contact our new teammate, she had already requested to join our Strava group, a request which I of course approved immediately.

You're still ahead of us (Team 4), even with the new person's miles counted! We have one who has no rides, and another who has one. We started out with only 12 people rather than 13. And I'm barely managing perfect attendance, with much reduced mileage, after mishaps that included developing a kidney stone on one ride (yes, really!) and developing a bent wheel rim on another that took me three days to get fixed (and involved my riding on a flat tire with no rear brake in between).

Woohoo! Skibumleg has already joined Team 12, adding 36 miles for this week and hitting the leader board a couple of times. Obviously the bum leg doesn't hamper cycling.

Rear brakes are overrated! :D But yeah I know a whole bunch of teams have issues with points. They're not my team though

I do wish there was more parity across the competition - I don't get the motivation from it when my team is fighting for 13th, or whatever. I guess that's what pointless prizes are for.

Yeah, aside from the first year, I think it's always been pretty obvious which team would win--or at least that it would be one of two teams--early on. And the more teams there are, the more people are going to be on one that doesn't win. But there are meet-ups and group rides, so people get a chance to meet new people. And there are pointless prizes, so everyone can be in competition for at least something. And there is the motivating effect of just seeing from others how much riding is possible, even in adverse weather conditions. So the competition serves a number of useful functions, even if the winner is not in doubt for long.

Last year the team I was on - Bipolar Bears - was in last and next to last place at the beginning of the competition - the first couple weeks. In the end we finished in second place. What is true now doesn't have to be so in March, and won't be. Lots can happen; people can get motivated; injuries heal, people who are really busy now won't be so busy later, etc.

I'm going to once again throw out my suggestion that the last place team get a bench player several times along the way (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9697-Now-what-%28Or-how-we-can-all-elbow-in-on-Sunyata%29&p=130414#post130414). That probably won't affect the fight among the top teams, but it will tighten it up overall.

As you say, adding a player to the last place team is unlikely to make that team shoot into first place. And I'm not sure how much people care about whether they are 19th place versus 12th place, for example. But the only way we're likely to find out is if you volunteer to do team assignments next year. The existing volunteers found balancing the teams to begin with, then rebalancing them when people failed to show up, challenging enough that they were unwilling to add a third layer of complexity.
