Teammates! Comrades! Non-teammates (heck anybody)!

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11737355

I'm working up an excursion on for this Saturday, and all are welcome to join. Our pace will be mostly moderate (13-14mph or so on the flats), although the route allows for faster riders to have a fast lap or two at Hains Point if you want to stretch.

All times somewhat approximate:

10am Depart Proteus bike shop, 9217 Baltimore Ave (Route 1) in College Park.
10:30-ish to 11am or so Breakfast at Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville (Route 1 at the NW Branch trail)
12:30-ish to 1pm-ish Bethesda Coffee etc. stop at Paul bakery right off the CCT

At this point, the schedule becomes murky. Laurie's dropping off to go to a baby shower in Bethesda. We could ride down to Georgetown for lunch and come back and pick her up after an hour and a half or so, getting a few extra miles. Or we could continue on, leaving her to ride home all by her lonesome.

Regardless, I was thinking about a placid route back via the riverfront and Capitol Hill, then back to the Met Branch and home. There could be modifications if we're behind schedule, but I'm hoping to get back to the shop by 5pm before it's completely dark. Regardless, it would probably be smart to bring a lock for food stops, and have trail lights in case we're running late.

Feel free join up along the way and to invite non-teammates. I'm in a communist, from-each-according-to-her-abilities-to-each-according-to-his-needs, non-competitive mood this week, and all are welcome.

Oops, Shortcake Bakery is closed this weekend for vacation, so breakfast stop will be at Board and Brew in College Park instead. Roughly 10:15am to 10:45 or 11-ish. Passing through the Shortcake Bakery area maybe about 11:30 or so

In similar theme to other team name suggestions, wanted to suggest reordering to put "Team 5" first, as name will likely get clipped in charts. Would suggest "Team 5 - BAFS2016" for consistency.

Not to hyjack the thread but once we get set up and registered I plan to drop the BAFS2016 from our name

Sure ... Well, we probably wantt something to indicate year? I.e. as oppsed to 2013/14/15 team 5. I will start a new thread to provide guidelines from sw perspective on naming, though.

Ok. I'm learning strava and relearning long for(u)m social media? I'll probably come across digital frequencies as pretty rude, gruff, and uncultured for the duration of BAFS2016. But I am please to be on team 5 and I think riding bikes is cool.

Since claeys team (14) settled on a name immediately, it's up to this year's Team 5 to carry on the tradition of endless (and entertaining) discussion about a team name.
If you have an hour or so to kill, read last year's Team 5 thread starting with this post (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8024-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5%EF%B8%8E-%E2%99%A5-6&p=105069#post105069).
C'mon this year's Team 5! You can best them.

with that much responsibility thrust onto our shoulders i'm not sure we'll ever be able to come up with an appropriate name. even if we went with "The Still Untitled's" in honor of last year we'd being doing a disservice in choosing too quickly.

someone should propose snot-rockets. That's what really got the discussion frothy last year.

Comrades! I'm distressed to report that I am going on vacation on Saturday, and will be out of range of the bicycles and the Internets through the first of February, and possibly a bit beyond. We don't return to the mother country until Feb. 14th.

Would any Team 5 cadres be willing to volunteer for the acting captaincy during my absence?

To my knowledge, the only duties are to be an admin on the Strava club, to monitor this BA forum thread for questions, concerns, complaints, un-revolutionary revisionist running dog sentiments etc., and to possibly organize an occasional team meetup or rideabout.

Please let me know on this thread or by PM or via Strava club discussion and I'll empower you with admin privileges.

comrades,
Does anyone want to ride this weekend? Last weekend's ride was fun and I'd do something like that again. I'd also be up for some mountain biking. Has anyone heard any good group ride ideas from adjacent teams 6, 16, 4, or XX?

I'd be comfortable leading any of the following rides that start around DT Silver Spring:

27 miles up and down Rock Creek Park between Garrett Park on the north and the gate at Beach Drive and Broad Branch on the south:
https://www.strava.com/activities/456080249

37 miles west on Glen Road, back along MacArthur:
https://www.strava.com/activities/424512231

43 miles west out MacArthur, back on Democracy:
https://www.strava.com/activities/445488308

~60 miles west out Glen Road, back along MacArthur, Hains Point, MBT, etc.
https://www.strava.com/activities/467510286

Any thoughts?

that first ride looks appealing to me, but I can't do it this weekend due to family obligations. Next weekend I could pull it off.

i would also be down for that first ride (or second) next weekend. i know this weekend i've got plans with the wife (don't worry, even if i have to sleaze i know how important the duty to the team is), but as far as i know next weekend is clear.

Dana, condolences on becoming acting captain. it is a heavy burden you carry for us all.

hmm. Maybe we should go ahead and start planning for a ride the following weekend. I knew I should have gotten studded tires this year. Wait, does sledding count toward BAFS miles? I could totally get in a sleaze mile on the local sledding hill!

As snow approaches, we sit about 50 points out of first place! Some of us have studs and will be riding straight through the mess. If the rest of us can just get outside for our daily "sleaze ride", I think we can win! And it would Be amazing to have a team of riders primarily from MD, where bike infrastructure is scant, won. Let's do this!

I will try, and plan to go out Friday before the storm. Saturday, however, may be a no-go if my street isn't plowed. I'll try hard to be back out Sunday.

I should have taken advantage of the Fat Bike sale that Surly was having a few weeks ago, an Ice Cream Truck Ops would be really nice.

I am very impressed with this team - great work so far. I will have the Fargo out in the snow!

Dear Team 5:
Make sure you guys stay safe out there this weekend. Definitely do not want anyone getting hurt or worse, messing up their bike. Maybe you guys should all just stay home and drink warm whisky by the fire.

Much love,
