Calling all members of Freezing Saddles 2016 Team 9! Seems someone saw fit to appoint me the acting team captain. I will try and act like one at least. (update) Dkel is the real one.

We are Team 9 for a reason. http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/ Rule #9 is the essence of Freezing saddles. We have been honored as a team to carry the very Number of foul weather riding itself.

Rule #9. "If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work."

Looks like there a couple of things to do to get started. One is to all chime in, introduce ourselves and the other is for us all to log in to Strava and join our Team Rule 9 velo club https://www.strava.com/clubs/175460

"Hi I am Kurt M in the game, I live in the falls church / tysons area and ride a bike. I like long walks on the beach, puppies, sunsets and...." Oh sorry, wrong profile.

I will set up a Strava group for us to use to follow the team and use for communicating. (Done, see above) Please let me know who you are on Strava here or via PM so I can send you a Strava invite. Ideas for a team name, (Team Rule 9 perhaps? ) rides we can do together and anything that comes to mind please chime in.

More later, got to herd some slightly energetic kids off to bed. Let the rides and smack talk begin!

Go team 9!

Go team 9! It was great to meet you at the happy hour. Rule 9 is a favorite. I keep it in mind whenever I ride to the grocery store on a rainy day.

My name is Jonathan Krall. I live in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria and volunteer with BPAC.

Hello teammates, I'm Ed C. and I live in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria. The majority of my miles come from my commute into DC, which tends to run 26-28 miles a day depending on the route I take. It was great meeting many of you last night and I look forward to riding with everyone both virtually and in person.

Hiya Team #9!

I'm Jon L (jlevine on the forum and Jonathan Levine on Strava). I live in Arlington, "race" (I use that term very loosely) with Ian B on Team Bikenetic, and will do my best not to bring shame and embarrassment to the team, but most likely will. I look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully we can set up a team ride.

Greetings, Team 9! I'm dkel, based in Falls Church City, and I actually volunteered to be captain of this team. Many thanks to Vicegrip for being our team representative at happy hour, and also for setting up our team page and Strava team. That leaves the nagging for me to do!

Speaking of nagging...to business!
1) Please introduce yourself to the team on this thread, if you haven't done so already.

2) Join our Strava team (https://www.strava.com/clubs/175460), if you haven't done so already. Without this, your miles will not score points for our team!

3) Ride your bike—a lot! The best strategy to advance our team is to ride at least one mile every day for the 10-point daily bonus. A team that has lots of daily riders will do at least as well as a team with a couple of high-mileage riders!

4) Ride safely, especially in adverse conditions. If you are not experienced with low-temperature riding, or riding on snow and ice (if we ever get either ), there is advice to be had on this forum; post a question and I guarantee it will be answered by many people. Please don't get injured: you can't score many points from the sidelines.

5) As to the team name, I'm pretty pleased with Vicegrip's idea of "Team Rule 9." If anyone has a different idea, post it to this thread, and we can discuss it.

6) If you have suggestions for team rides, post them here or in the team discussion on Strava. An initial idea: we could do a beer ride, and couple it with the Beerneuring challenge. It would be easy to meet at one of the breweries along the W&OD and ride out to a couple of others; Mad Fox in Falls Church and Caboose in Vienna are nearby, and Beltway Brewing, Old Ox, and Lost Rhino are all close to the trail in Sterling.

On a personal note: I'm currently in a depressing situation with sore knees and awkward bike fit, so I'm afraid I won't be putting in as many miles as I did last year. :( I will ride every day, though, and make as many of my full commutes as I can. I'm equipped to deal with snow and ice, so that shouldn't be a problem. With luck, I'll have my fit issues sorted out soon, and maybe my knees will continue to improve. I'd like to be able to blitz the last couple weeks of the challenge....

Get out and ride, Team Rule 9!!

So far we have 8 team members logged in to Strava.

As said the daily mile is the biggest bang for the buck. Sometimes you don't even have to dress up much to last a mile in less than lovely weather. Got 10 min to kill? A quick spin around the "hood" and you are in for 11 points and another day checked off.

The fun part is ether over or just getting started depending on how you look at it so I will step aside and go ride while David gets to do the naggy bits. :) Seems "acting captain" does not mean "no one wanted to so we pointed at you" as someone informed me. The note on the peel off back of the name tag was lost to the bar darkness. David, I hope your knees improve. Please don't push it for points and thanks for the work for the team.

Lets all go for a ride! I am in for weekend rides if anyone wants a wheel-sucker or wind blocker. Tend to haunt the W&OD, Arl loop, and make runs down to MT Vernon now and then. My house in Falls church to Purceville round trip is 80 miles with lots of places to stop and eat or drink or not.

Hello Team 9!

Looks like I am late to the game on introductions. My name is Mike Pusey (insert laughter here). I also ride/race with John L and Ian B on Team Bikenetic. I live in Falls Church for now. I try to commute every day to work, only about 7 miles each way, but will try to add some more to the game for the team. I'm up for a ride just about anytime outside of regular 8-6 work hours during the week.

This is my first post in the forum and i'm completely new to Strava so i'll try to make sure i track all my rides. Forgot one this morning already, SO SORRY. I'll make sure to try to get them every time.

Im up for any rides of XC mountain, gravel, cross, and road.

Question: I dont really do the forum scene much, is there something I can use that is more mobile oriented to get updates from this feed? I use an Android phone but dont have a computer at home so I'd love any suggestions on how to keep in touch or a mobile app that lets me participate.

Look forward to seeing you on the trails.

Mike P

PS: Looking to attempt a Harpers Ferry ride out and back in a day if anyone is interested.

Hello Everyone!

I'm Daniel Plasters. I live on the south side of the Vienna metro. I ride a single speed belt drive bike... my less than secret goal is to take the top average speed prize on a single speed.. because gears are for suckers and belts are inefficient, right?

Dkel I'm sorry to hear about your knees! We could have been team belt drive!!!!

I don't typically ride on the W&O since I think riding at speed on it is not a responsible thing to do, but if we need miles... we need miles.... and I've never been to Caboose despite living so very very close....

Rule 9.

Dkel I'm sorry to hear about your knees! We could have been team belt drive!!!!

Thanks, man. I have actually been able to ride the belt drive fixie—but only in the neighborhood, and only a mile or two at a time. More than that does make me sore, so I'm using my geared bike for commutes. That said, the reach on both my bikes is wonky now because I totally redid my saddle position for better pedal efficiency. So I have a larger Straggler frameset on order, and will have to swap my components over when it comes in, at which point I will be only on the fixie for short rides until the new frame is up and running. Then I can try to get a larger frame for the fixie. Complicated, but I will still be able to ride every day!

Go Team Rule 9!

Count me in for a Harpers out and back if you guys can put up with a Cat-6 Fred, 15 mph JRA commuter, 16 to 18 when thinking about it type. Road rider but I also have a under used CADD-X

There's a discussion here (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9765-Teams-(Strava-clubs)-update-naming-conventions), but you don't really need to read it if you don't want. I was thinking: Team Rule 9 - BAFS2016. Hopefully that will meet the esoteric standard.

You name your team after one of The Rules and then complain about sore knees? As a member of last year's Rule 9 Velo team all I can say is Rule 5 buddy, Rule 5.

If you are an admin you can add other admins by going to the Member's list in the group and hovering over the member you want to make an admin with your cursor. A 'make admin' option will then appear that you can click on like so:

Sorry, everyone, for my angry post, and sorry in particular to @glennpstevens for being insulting to you. Obviously I'm pretty sensitive about this tendinitis in my knees. I love riding my bike: it has changed my life in incredible and inspiring ways in the last couple of years, and given me more joy than I can describe (of course, you all know what I'm talking about!). This injury has kept me from riding as much as I want, and in the way I want; I've been frustrated and depressed over it for several months now. So, I'm sorry for overreacting; the whole thing gets the better of me at times, which I regret. WSGFABR!

Injuries are the worst. I feel your pain. A few years ago I had patellar tendonitis that kept me from doing so many activities for months.

What sucks the most is that you think you're healed and try and get back at it, then bam, it flairs up again. Rest up and get better soon!

A couple of things I've used:

1. Follow him on Strava. Once you've done this, you can use the invite button on the club's Strava page (assuming you're an admin) to invite him to the club.
2. Post a comment on his most recent ride, asking him both to authorize Freezing Saddles to read his Strava data and to join the club.

Good luck! If neither of those works, you can ask Sunyata for a replacement.

Sunyata and I are in conversation. He hasn't been riding for more than a week, so I'm not sure Strava is on his radar. Also, people sign themselves up for this thing, so I'm only willing to go so far to get people to follow through; after all, if the interest isn't really there, I'm not sure placement on a team is desirable anyway!

Running Schwalbe Marathon Winters right now, good combination of bite in the ice without as much of a hit in rolling resistance I've experienced in other studded tires (still slower than regular tires, naturally). Ended up riding in the peak of the blizzard today, was the fastest growing snow beard I have had while riding.

Good to know about both of those pieces of information. I like that alternate Ride With GPS route. 9 am Sunday work? Gives some time for any black ice to melt.
