Stealing this idea from the Tour de B-Cycle (https://boulder.bcycle.com/tour-de-b-cycle) in Boulder, I have chosen this Sunday, November 8, to undertake the CaBi Quest Arlington, in which I will visit every BikeShare station in Arlington and dock and undock a bike. My count shows 81 stations currently.

I figure I'll be at Java Shack for my first rest break around 8:30-9:00. Feel free to meet me there for your Sunday coffeeneuring point.

I'm thinking Crystal City around lunchtime, although my timing estimates get fuzzier the farther into the quest I go. My best estimate is 7-8 hours for the whole thing, including rest/lunch stops.

I will be passing through Ballston at the end of the Quest, so if anyone would like to meet at Carpool or something to celebrate, let's do it.

Have fun! I was considering doing something like this also, but you will beat me to it.

By the way, one of the presenters at the most recent CaBi hack night shared an animated visualization of his TSP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem) heuristic for visiting all the existing CaBi stations. That might take more than a day, though!

I have almost finalized my route, and it's tentatively like this:

Start at N. Nelson & Lee Highway
Work towards Rosslyn
Out the R-B corridor
Down to Shirlington
Over to Crystal City
Pick up stragglers along C-Pike and head back north through Ballston to starting point

I'm also planning to take a photo or two at each station and track with my Garmin. Sadly, I don't have a GoPro to make a YouTube video like the cool ones Bobco does.

Proposed Instagram/Twitter hashtag: #CaBiQuestArl

Pretty soon Arlington will be adding more stations, so just wait a bit, and you can best me.

(That's actually part of the reason I'm doing it now--easier before they add the new stations)

(writing this even after seeing Tim's offer to lend the GoPro) you could still make a cool video using photos and mapping your route on Strava Fly-By/other software.

My ideas for a video of your trip:

the video is a hybrid visualization/slideshow
overview map of Arlington; the stations would "fill in" as you visit them (maybe something like a star appearing on the location)
miniature SteveO icon to show your position traveling to each station on Strava Fly-By
the photos you take at each station could appear in a top corner of the map in sync with each station visit
you could use videos from the GoPro of getting to/from each neighborhood
peppy soundtrack to go with the passage of time (hours of riding condensed into a few minutes of video)

I'd love to help out with something like this, but I will be out of town (leaving early Sunday morning for 2 weeks). Have fun on the trip!

Some guy rode to all the CaBi stations in the region in one day, but this was in the first year or two of the system. There weren't nearly as many stations as there are now. I don't think Alexandria or Montgomery County had joined yet. There may not have been any stations along the Orange Line yet either. So that guy's task was easier. There's no way someone could ride to every station in the region in one day now. The CaBi bikes aren't fast enough and there are so many more stations now, across a much broader geographic area.

CaBi Quest Arlington is more manageable but even that is a lot more difficult than it would have been in 2010 when all of the stations were in Crystal City and Pentagon City.

I have a much crappier than Tim's, but live near your first station. If you can't get to BikeArlington's Intergalactic headquarters, and want to use my camera, lmk.

Or better yet, maybe Erin could drop BA's by my place, and you could swing by to pick it up...

Barring any unexpected occurrences, the CaBi Quest Arlington will occur this Sunday, November 15.

Same time and route. Starting at Lee Highway and N. Nelson at 7:30am, with coffee stop at Java Shack around 8:55 (+/-15). I have the GoPro from Bike Arlington and my new smart phone that has a front-facing camera lens (yes, all those selfies I took in the past I was guessing where to point).

Hoping to finish by 4:00.

Post Quest gathering TBD; suggestions (Ballston area: Buzz? Carpool?) and friends welcome.

If you are interested in trying to find me, here's my list of stations in the order I intend to do them, starting at 7:30 or so. I am planning about 5 minutes on average between stations, plus a couple of breaks, but that's just a guess.

I will be at Buzz Bakery for a glass of wine or something at the end. If you still need your last coffeeneuring point, that would be your chance.

How many total miles, and hours?

I logged 39 miles on the Garmin, but that included a detour, which added about 3 to the total.
Here's the Strava map (https://www.strava.com/activities/433619051).

I started a little before 8 and ended a little before 5. If someone wanted to do it faster, they could, because I took a couple of breaks along the way, and my detour added 30 minutes or so. I also took pictures at every single station and a few others in between, so that added a minute or so to each one. I hope to collect the photos into some sort of video montage, a la bobco.

Thanks to BikeArlington for loaning the GoPro. It turned out to be a fail. Turns out there is no way to mount it to the bike. Tim and I thought we had devised a way to hang it from the front rack, but even if I could have done that, it would interfere with docking. Helmet mount would have been the solution.

I did get a little bit of video holding it in my hand, which I have not had time to look at yet.

The new credit card option saved my bacon. My fob cracked early in the ride, and I struggled to get it to slip into the readers. The credit card thing works great. Pretty simple to use.

Yes, Tim, I'll write one. No promises on timing.

Yeah, well 81 in Arlington (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9525-CaBi-Quest-Arlington) was plenty enough for me. :)

Like they do in Ninja Warrior, if someone beats the course, they change the course and make it harder the next year.

200 Arlington CaBi stations in 2016!

[Not really, but that would be awesome.]

My brother-in-law appears on the Boulder Tour de B-Cycle Wall of Fame (https://boulder.bcycle.com/tour-de-b-cycle) twice for this very reason. In 2014 with 32 stations and 2015 with 38. Boulder now has 39.

200 would be possible, IMO, particularly if they were in-fill stations, so the additional distance might only be 20-40% greater. Although it took me about 9 hours to do 81, a focused rider could probably do it in 1/2 that time.

Steve O

I have compiled my stats from my CaBi account and from Strava, for those of you who are data hounds.

Total elapsed time (Strava) - 8:54:59
Total moving time (Strava) - 4:33:23
Total time undocked bike (CaBi) - 5:53:39
Elevation gain (Strava) - 1,047 feet
Total distance (Strava) - 39.3 miles
Distance (CaBi) - 47 miles [Note - CaBi estimates distance based on time]

All the following from my Capital Bikeshare account info:

Shortest time between stations- 49 seconds (twice): S. Glebe & Potomac Ave. to 35th & Potomac; 18th & Bell to 20th & Bell
Other under 60 seconds (52 seconds): Wilson & N. Uhle to Courthouse Metro

Longest time between stations: 45:20, which included a detour to take care of some personal business
2nd longest time between stations: 32:52, which included a coffee stop at Cafe Sazon
Average time between stations: 4:25 (including the two longs ones above)
Median time between stations: 2:53

Total bike rental cost: $3.00 (two rides over 30 minutes)

I've done a few multi-hour CaBi sessions, but never hitting that many stations. Either I do some out-and-backs or loops and return to the same stations or nearby stations, or I string a few of those loops together. Or I head in a line, sometimes when I was mapping bike racks for RackSpotter earlier in the year. I exceeded the 30-min. limit a few too many times because I was more focused on street and rack coverage than getting to the next station in a hurry. But at least the money goes toward the CaBi system. I don't mind paying $1.50 extra for CaBi, on occasion.

My max number of stations in a single day is probably no more than five or six.

Cool video! I like the variety of angles/perspectives used to make the 81 individual bikeshare stations more interesting.

One suggestion: you should add a link to the map of your route in the video description as I think people will be interested in trying this ride for themselves.

Yesterday was the 1-year anniversary of my Cabi Quest. There are more stations now, so it's a slightly tougher challenge.

If you are truly bored you can kill some time by watching the video and trying to find these things:

Video Scavenger Hunt
Easy

An ART Bus
An escalator
A playground (2)
Protected bike lane (2)
A bikeshare bike that originated in DC

Hard

Non-bikeshare bikes locked up (there are 3)
A trolley car
Arlington County logo
A yellow bike helmet
A sushi restaurant

Expert

Ice skaters
A dog
A reversed seat on a bikeshare bike
A popcorn box
A taxicab

Doesn't count unless you ride it on a CaBi. And check in the bike at every dock.
