Hey forum people. The PAL Ambassadors have been making Burma Shave signs for future block party events. What we found at last week's Wine, Cheese and Poetry party was that it was a lot of fun and also therapeutic. What would you like to say to drivers? Make a funny poem/rhyme/jingle about it. Many we can't use because of their content. Honestly, those are some of the funniest ones.

If you have a little time, come up with one or two! Let your mind go and have fun with this. I'll share some examples.

If you don't know what a Burma Shave Sign is, the image at the top is one from Wikipedia. Here's there article on them (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma-Shave#Roadside_billboards).

Keep in mind that the audience is drivers. The subject is safe streets and being Predictable, Alert and Lawful. :D

Thanks!

I don't care if you're
A car or a trucker
Give me 3 feet when you pass me
You stupid.....

That's as far as I got. I'll think of a rhyme eventually and get back to you.

a man on a bike
but to my loving family
I'm the Dad they really like

Fun use of a work break; I'm sure more will pop into my head as the day goes on. Here's what I have made so far (I think some of these would work on trails, too):

Sharing spaces
Safer places
Happy faces

-------------------

Look both ways
Live more days

-------------------

P's and Q's
Make nicer U's

-------------------

A good fellow
Slows on yellow

-------------------

Look before
Right on red
So no one
Ends up dead

-------------------

Used a light
Seen at night

-------------------

Try a bell
before a yell

-------------------

When he yells
His breath smells

--------------------

If you want
To give a shout
Count to 10
Try it out

If you accept the fact that a car (thing) is different than a trucker (person) I can save you a couple of syllables.

in a car or truck
three feet please

This one doesn't rhyme but I still like it. It was painted on a retaining wall on a hairpin bend on a road leading up to Darjeeling in India

Better to be 15 minutes late in this world
Than 15 minutes early in the next

How about:
To peeps in the crosswalk
You should yield
Because these peeps
Don't come with a force field

Bonus points for visuals

Just thought of a shorter version of this:

Peeps in crosswalk
Drivers should yield
Because these peeps
Have no force field

Friday afternoon in the office... time for some limericks:

If you can't seem to drive on this block,
Without using your phone for a talk,
Then you're putting a stranger
In very grave danger
You could hit someone out for a walk.

If you're always in such a mad dash,
You could be the cause of a crash
If your foot's full of lead
Then a bike or a ped
becomes blood stained all over your dash.

A little girl wonders, "where's my dad?"
When she learns, she will break down and cry, sad,
Because dad's bike was hit
By an arrogant twit
Who thought he could drive with his iPad.

Here's more of a Burma shave meter:

Please hang up your phone
and don't send that text.
Have any idea
what's coming up next?
Pedestrian crossing
Is right up ahead
If you are distracted
Someone will be dead

Definitely leaning toward the morbid here. I suppose it's tough to be light-hearted while conveying the proper message though...

Morbid plays well if people are smiling and laughing when they deliver it. :D

Thanks Scoot! You are awesome.

Eyes ahead

The short ones are better- quicker to create, quicker to read (remember we're competing with I phones, GPS, visual distractions, and short attention spans), and are halfway to Haiku.

Drive a car?
Share the road...

This one wins my vote. Great combination of brevity, meter, rhyme, and message.

Okay, I'm in. Here's a few:

Out on the streets
Take your time and behave
(or: Be a PAL and behave)
You may get a smile
And a big, friendly wave

Getting to home
That’s all that I wished
You looked at your phone
Now I am squished

Texting is great
YouTube is good
Don’t look at your phone
Or I’ll bounce off your hood

Late for a meeting
It’s down to the wire
Pay attention, though, Dude
Or I’ll be under your tire

C’mon, be Predictable
Be Alert and be Lawful
If you’re not a PAL
The results may be awful

I could do this all day! But I suppose I should do some actual work, maybe.

When you pay your tab and leave the bar,
Please take a cab and not your car.

Please don’t text, or dig in your purse
Or we’ll be riding home by hearse.

Use caution at the wheel
So you don’t put the children on wheels [insert wheelchair symbol here].

"No, bikes aren't fun!"
"They're meant to annoy,"
Says Anderson
And Courtland Milloy

Or better:

Ride bikes for fun
And then you'll annoy
Lon Anderson
And Courtland Milloy

How fun! Let's see, for an uplifting one how about:

We share the same road
Mile upon mile
Let's lighten the load
With a wave and a :)!

Annnnd for the daily gripe:

The bollards are here
To keep you off my back
So please keep your rear
Outta our cycle track!

We're all trying
to get to work
We'll all get there
if we're not jerks

Yes, bikes are slow
but what's your hurry?
You'll still get there,
don't you worry

Pass with care
and lots of room
Don't send cyclists
to their doom

So these signs may be happening in conjunction with the Parks Department! There is some enthusiasm on their side for fun and creative signage that can be moved around and doesn't get lost in the background of the trail.

We may be using some of the ideas on here, but if you any other suggestions, get them in!

I like how this message encourages people to be reflective without admonishing those aren't. I always wear reflectors while riding, especially because I ride mostly in streets, but there's a slippery slope toward victim-blaming that we don't want to travel down. There is not and should not be a requirement for pedestrians to wear reflectors.

I've been riding the road into the for the last few weeks and staying off the trails. This morning I rode Custis and W&OD both in and out of the city so that I could bask in the awesomeness that is these signs. Soooooooooooo impossibly awesome.

Thank you!!!

Love,

Just heard that these signs on the Custis near George Mason are out of order. If someone is going past there tonight--can you stop fix them?

Depends on if the new order is better than the original or not.

I rode past these last weekend. I like them. It would like to see them spaced a bit farther apart. Part of the appeal of the Burma Shave signs is the anticipation of what the next sign will say.

You ride too fast. Ride slower, like mere sub-10k mortals, and then the signs will have the proper time spacing.

Judd

I wish I could say speed was the problem. But if they spaces them farther I could get more miles.
