Whether or not he follows through on his threat of moving to Kyiv, we will gather and drink and eat in his honor.

Details:

Thursday, June 11 - say around 5PM start
Elephant & Castle - 900 19th St. NW (the one near Farragut - not the one near Metro Center)
We have a section reserved for us near the bar.

Feel free to bring a story or photo or card or Pointless Prize. Or just come. All welcome whether or not you even know consularrider (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/member.php?64-consularrider). You'll know others, and if you don't, it'll be a great chance to meet us.

RSVP by liking this post, so I can get an estimated head count. (Yes, Dread, that means you have to <like> one of my posts.)

Just because you "like" a post doesn't mean you can't also "dislike" the post.

Well, given that I work in the building that houses the Elephant & Castle, I feel I should attend. Have not had the pleasure to meet Consular yet, but he sounds like a swell guy!

Also, I like Ukraine and have spent a fair bit of time in the bits that have become... unfortunately, very "exciting" lately. So I can always provided useless and unwelcome advice (something I excel at)... :-)

I liked the post and will be there for happy hour but I definitely dislike the reason for our gathering! Consularrider, as one of my usual partners in crime, should NOT be allowed to leave!

I will not like this post because of the lack of an offsetting dislike option on tapatalk.

My situation is nearly identical, as to the working near part, not having met Consular part and being a font of worthless advice part (but not the having an exciting life part). I feel compelled to stop by and join the party.

I also work on the same block as that building, so I think I should be able to drop by.

I'm a no. Family conflict.

Is there some reason why we can't also do the usual third Thursday anyway?

Rootchopper - We'll probably also do the usual Third Thursday at Cap City this month. I'll post about that after this week's event for Chris.

Good because I invited the new bike commuter in my office and she lives near Shirlington

Hey all you nearby-ians. Please educate us on bike parking.
Any chance we could use your parking garage?
Is it open for public use?
Space for bikes?
Still open to get them out late?

Any ideas, advice, etc. is welcomed.

Ruh-ight.

So a couple months back consular tells me he's leaving on the 16th. Therefore, happy hour on the 11th. Good. Mr. Steve O gets it all arranged.

A little later he tells me he's actually leaving a week later - but don't change the happy hour, because he'll be too "busy" to come on the 18th.

Uh-huh. Then I see this post.

I wonder how many happy hours he's going to end up milking this imaginary Ukraine move into.

Any ideas, advice, etc. is welcomed.

You do see a few bikes locked to the fences of the outside area at E&C (as well as the signposts/etc around there). If we're outside, or even just near a window, I think a long cable lock would be fine to secure a bunch of bikes, assuming E&C don't mind. It'll be a reasonably busy area on a summer Thurs evening so it would have to be a very daring thief.

Hello --

Here are some suggestions for garage bike parking a couple of blocks away:

1801 K Street -- the garage entrance is actually on the L Street side of the building. There is a cage (which gets pretty full), but you need a key card to access it. However, you can lock your bike to the outside of the cage. It should be pretty secure; there are always attendants there. Not sure how late it is open, but when I worked there, I never got locked in and I can work pretty late sometimes.

Arent Fox Building -- 1717 K Street -- this has ample bike parking, well lit and very secure. The lobby is open 24 hours so if you stay so late you get locked in, you are allowed to bring your bike up the elevator and through the lobby to exit.

There may be buildings closer, but these I definitely know about.

There should also be bike parking in the garage for 1909 K Street, the entrance to which is on 19th.

My building has a locked cage, so it's no good unless you have a key. I've also learned that the induction loop for the exterior doors, which go down at 7, is triggered by steel and aluminum frames, but not carbon.

Reason: So... as a rule.... will we only be allowed to drink vodka at these alleged going away parties

Maybe more of a guideline than a rule:

The garage at 1909 K is a no-go. It, too, now has an access-controlled bike room. There is a garage in the building in which the pub is located, though I didn't descend into the depths to reconnoiter. As mentioned, there is a small number of bike racks almost directly in front. A few bikes were also locked to the railing surrounding the outdoor seating area.

There are also about 6 Bikeshare stations within 3 blocks or so.

Hey! For those of you who never received your bicycle icicle after Freezing Saddles, I am bringing them to happy hour tomorrow. If you are one of these people, pick up your icicle. If you know one of these people, pick up their icicle and deliver it to them.

I hope those bicycle icicles will cool things down a little. Either that or ice cold Status or Kruto vodka.

That's a shame. :-/ I got there after all and had an extra lock I would have fixed you up with.

Maybe you can join us at our next happy hour at Cap City in Shirlington next Thursday. Chris will be there too!

Sorry to have missed you; by the time I tried to track you down, you were already into your commute home. Pity is that there were several spare locks among the group, and we would've gladly secured your bike.

So who told Dickie it was a beach party?

Because it's so grey in England, whenever there's sunshine people assume it's beach weather.

For a second I thought that was Dismal in those pictures, but the guy appeared to have a beer in only one hand, so obviously it's someone else.
