View Full Version : Blessing of Bikes - May 17, 2015 - Clarendon Presbyterian Church

03-26-2015, 04:08 PM
My church, Clarendon Presbyterian, a block from Liberty Tavern, is having a blessing of the bikes on Sunday, May 17, 2015.

Details are still being worked out, but save the date. Our service is at 10am. The location would be great for a ride before/after -- it's right by the Clarendon Metro and only a couple blocks from the Custis (at Lyon Village via Kirkwood).

When are you guys putting in your Bicycle Friendly Business application again?

Being a church employee, I will be at work at that time. Otherwise, I'd go for it: my fixie hasn't yet been blessed!

If you don't buy me whiskey, I will curse your bicycle Friday night.

Is this still on? Given it's Gillian's church and she may be busy with family-related stuff, I wonder.

It's listed on their church calendar as part of the service. Are jews, catholics, muslims, confucians, heathens and others welcome to skip the service and just come for the blessing? If so, what time should they come?
Or is it intended primarily for church members?

Yes, still on. I'm not the one doing the blessing. :-)

All are welcome at the service. You're also welcome after, just for the blessing. I'm thinking it will be at 1130am - time for service to end (usually at 11a) and those that want to get coffee.

I was thinking those that want could ride post blessing. We could do a short, flat easy ride down Key Blvd, then those who want to can come back and others can use Veitch to get to the trail and go crazy.

All confirmed. Blessing of the Bikes, Sunday, May 17. Clarendon Presbyterian Church 1305 N Jackson Street, 22201 (one block north of Liberty Tavern in Clarendon).

Service starts at 10am. I'm doing time with kids. Coffee time starts at 11am. At 1130am we'll head out to the parking lot to have our bikes blessed and ride through lyon village, in a short loop, though those that wish can easily connect to the Custis at Veitch and do a longer ride.

Clarendon Presbyterian is on N Irving St one block north of Liberty Tavern / the intersection of Wilson and Washington (basically Clarendon Metro). All are welcome at services. This church also hosts WABA's Arlington Advisory Committee every 3rd Monday of the month. (Right, that's this coming Monday).

Buy me a bike and I will bless your whiskey.

assuming the whiskey is not part of a meal http://www.dinonline.org/2011/05/29/berachah-on-whiskey-in-meal/

And I was interested to learn that we say shehakol over cognac, rather than borei pri hagafen - the distillation cancelling out the grape origin. I feel it is important for me to have some cognac soon, so that this new knowledge does not remain academic.
