Sorry for the lateness in posting this. I've been out riding a bike and having way too much fun lately! Thanks to everyone for all that and especially all who helped with the festivities last night.

Please come join us for this final event of #BAFS15 - you don't want to miss it! We've had a great and fun competition this year and we need to celebrate!

Achievements will be recognized, pointless prizes will be awarded, teammates and competitors will be met, and beer, food and frivolity will round out the evening. Special award nametags have been created by MSalemme for all BAFS 2015 participants who come to the happy hour.

This is also a great chance make new riding friends for the remainder of the year with whom you can share your memories of the glories, miseries and most ridiculous moments of this year's competition.

Details: Friday, March 27 at 6 pm, Capitol City Brewing Company Shirlington. Please contribute $5-10 cash per person to help cover the cost of shared appetizers.

Bike and car parking is plentiful in Shirlington Village. A diagram showing parking info is attached. 8148

See also Post No. 113 in this thread for last minute details.

Many thanks to those who have volunteered to help with various things at the happy hour (fund collecting, nametags, bike parking info, etc.)! It would be helpful if you can show up a little early. If not, we can still use your help in other ways. Volunteers still welcome.

Thanks everyone. Hope you can make it! If you haven't already RSVP'd, please remember to let me know if you're coming.

Do you have a mini-amp and mic or other way of making people audible that you can bring? (Unfortunately, mine is with my son in Charlottesville.) Last year it was relatively impossible to hear people announcing their Pointless Prizes even by standing on a chair. I suspect this year's turnout may be even larger, making that task even more difficult.

I have a small amp you can use if you want. I used to have a nice Sure SM-58 mic, but I'm pretty sure my kids borrowed it for something at school, and...I don't have a nice Sure SM-58 anymore.

Let me know if you want me to bring the amp. It has a ¼ in jack for input, so whatever you want to plug into it should have that type plug (like the adapter I had for that mic...).

Checked out the outlet situation at Cap City. Suggest at least 25 feet of extension cord and tape for floor. (I'm going to check this again and see if there might be a way to make it shorter.)

Hello friends,

Bike Arlington has again been remarkably generous and supportive to us crazy FSers. Unfortunately, none of them is able to come on Friday. So we need some help.

- We need someone to go by their offices to get the scarves, jerseys and possibly other swag and bring to the happy hour

- We need a volunteer to handle distribution of the scarves. There will be 50. You should either be burly or mean (or both), because people will try to steal them (I'm looking at you, rcannon!). I will provide you with a list of names which you may use to track recipients. You cannot be susceptible to sweet-talking. And you will need to attend to them throughout the happy hour; scarves left unattended will disappear.

Thanks

Thanks! Okay, rcannon, please swing by and get the stuff. Tricky part is that BA may not know the jersey sizes by then (still collecting this info). Maybe they can give you a bunch, and we'll return the extries.

kwarkentien - you are hereby dubbed BA Scarf Nazi. rcannon will have them and will bring them to HH. Count them carefully, as he is not trustworthy. You may want to recruit an assistant, since I know you will be awarding a pointless prize at one point. There will be leftovers, since I doubt all 50 winners will be there (they still get one; they just have to go by BA to pick theirs up later). We'll need to figure out how to get them back to BA. I can probably carry them in my panniers, and I work near BA, so I can help with that part.

You mean you never did a midnight sleaze?
Then I recommend you try it next winter!

Those who have ridden in the middle of the night know what a high it can be to ‘own’ the roads when the car-drivers are asleep. Add to that the sense of utter absurdity of the pre-storm sleaze – the realization that there’s really no reason to be riding the night-owl shift aside from this silly game -- and the midnight sleaze take on a special significance. I’d definitely do it again.

At least for someone in the “sandwich generation” whose life is about looking after children, parents, bosses, and others who need our care, there is something absolutely delicious about getting out there and taking a middle-of-the-night ride just for the pure stupid fun of the Freezing Saddles experience.

That said, if you're not on my team next year then feel free to skip it. Sleep is important. :+)

Yes, and a word of advice, don't ride Hains Point. It is boring and full of strange cycling characters. Especially after dark. Not advisable.

Except if you are on my team, of course. ;)

I won't be there so I'd like to see a video of Brünø bestowing an award on Brünø. Please?

(Seriously, someone should consider video-recording the award-giving part of the evening.)

Bad news: the inimitable Rod Smith will be unable to attend.

Worse news: I, Brünø, will be taking his place and awarding the prizes he sponsored.

Awkward news: I won one of them. Unless you really want to see me try to award myself a prize (no, no you don't), I'm going to need a volunteer who can muster an unusual amount of gusto.

This is sad news indeed. So who will stand in for Rod for the bestowing of the Best Snotcicle Award?

I seem to recall someone mentioning some bike parking near Cap City? I know the racks along that road fill up quickly, and there are only so many signs. Am I making this up?

Someone should make an app for that. http://www.bikearlington.com/pages/biking-in-arlington/bike-parking/rackspotter-crowdsourced-bike-parking-map/

And then someone should populate it while they're over there!

LAST MINUTE ROUND-UP OF HAPPY HOUR INFORMATION

Shirlington has lots of bike parking (official and unofficial)! The parking map on the first post in this thread shows where a lot of it is located.

In addition, and not shown well on the diagram, the bus station, just up S. Quincy Street from Cap City, has U racks for about 21 bikes under an awning. There is also lots of bike parking at the library down the street near the Harris Teeter. Also, it's fine to lock up to lamp posts (need a cable lock), so long as you don't block where pedestrians walk.

If parking seems to be getting overly tight in all the obvious places, we'll get one of our #BAFS folks with local knowledge to assist any who might be having difficulty finding a place.

Bikeshare and a major bus station are also available close by. There are two close bikeshare stations, one on s. Quincy Street across from the bus station, and one on S. Arlington Mill Drive across from the Hilton. Multiple buses run from the Pentagon to Shirlington. (The 7A, 7C, 7F, 7Y and ART 87X among them.)

Once you've entered Cap City, we have a private room to the left of the hostess stand. At the back of that room is an area where you can easily store backpacks, panniers, jackets etc. where they will be out of the way but accessible.

Please remember to bring $5-$10 cash per person to contribute for the shared appetizers. We'll be collecting for that at the station where the award name tags are given out.

Beers will be at happy hour prices and our waiters have agreed to do individual checks for all 80+ of us. We have an awesome team of Cap City's hardest working waiters, so please keep them in mind when you pay your tab.

Please let me know if there are any more questions I can help with. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

What? The answer my question is in the first post of The Official BAFS15 Happy Hour thread, the very thread in which I asked my question? How could I have EVER known that? I mean, who would even think to look there?

Anyway, thanks for gracefully answering my question after my complete failure to even try to find the answer myself.

I regretfully won't be able to be there tonight. Bruno will be playing the part of Rod Smith, and I Eric Williams. He has said he will "stand on a chair" for me and "wear a fake beard" for Rod. Please hold him to this and take many, many, pictures.

I really wanted to attend and meet all the BAFS folks that suffered all winter long. I hope everyone has a great time! I'm looking forward to getting together with many of you in the future and will do my absolute best to remain active on this forum.

By the way, I realized today that the same people won both of my climbing challenges, this means they will likely end up drunk> to avoid this (if they choose to) they can gladly substitute beer for a product containing less alcohol. I would like to see everyone get home safely.

Multiple buses run from the Pentagon to Shirlington. (The 7A, 7E, 7C, and ART 87X among them.)

Quick correction on the bus routes: 7E is not a bus that goes to Shirlington, but 7F and 7Y do as well as the 25A, 22A (takes a scenic stroll through Fairlington before getting there), and the aforementioned buses listed by Arlingtonrider.

A huge thank you to:

1. All of the BAFS riders that made this winter (dare I say it) so much fun!

2. The organizers of the BAFS-ing who kept things running smoothly (Hozn, Steve O and the countless others); and

3. Those who made the final HH such a success, from the fantastic plates to the super prizes.

I cannot wait until next year. And all of you, stay away from Hains Point!

Thanks to everyone for being so good to my boys last night. Nothing engenders a love of cycling in 12 year-olds like biking to a gathering with free (to them) food, unlimited root beer and a room full of happy people. And condom medals. Definitely condom medals.

Seriously - thank you!

For those of you who missed or may have had trouble hearing, here are the winners of this year's creative ride titles Pointless Prize.
I must say that it was both a joy and real task to select; there were literally scores of deserving titles, ranging from funny to satirical to profound to poetic to literary and on and on. I'll add another post of honorable mentions later.

Each winner received a gorgeous, ready-to-be-framed memorial certificate along with a related Pointless Prize of immense value.
-----------------------------
Creative Ride Titles Special Commendation
Awarded to:
Millie T
For her 38-day ride-title saga of dubious fiction (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8280-Freezing-Saddles-Saga-a-Work-of-Dubious-Fiction) in tribute to Freezing Saddles. Thanks!

Pointless Prize for her work of dubious fiction: a fictional doobie
-----------------------------
Creative Ride Title
Category: Glad it Was You and not Me
Awarded to:
Kevin W
For his title that suddenly takes a turn for the worse:

“Hills, Loop and A MACHETE-WIELDING MANIAC!”

Pointless Prize: a machete, of course (actually a plastic sword)
------------------------------
Creative Ride Title
Category: Theology
Awarded to:
Cynthia P
For her title series that put bicycles in their appropriate place:

“Give us this day our daily ride...I mean bread. And forgive us our sleaze, as we forgive them that sleaze against us. And lead us not into temptation, except of the two-wheeled kind. For thine is the kingdom, the power, the glory and my bicycle, forever and ever. Amen.”

Pointless Prize for this spiritually inspiring effort: a votive candle
------------------------------
Creative Ride Title
Category: I’m not a Poet, but I Sometimes Play One on Strava
Awarded to:
Kurt M
For his stolen title:

“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top of the disheveled tide, And dance upon the mountains like a flame.” ― W.B. Yeats

Pointless Prize: an anagram of Yeats: Yeast = a bagel
----------------------------
Creative Ride Title
Category: True, True, True!
Awarded to:
Gillian B
For her definitely not-false title:
“Everyone's wearing pants so we're good”

Pointless Prize: a pair of pants (from Build-a-Bear)
----------------------------
Creative Ride Title
Category: Euphemism
Awarded to:
Nimish C
For his entendre-ridden ride title:

“I got a bicycle icicle for you right here, Steve O,
if you know what I mean”

Pointless Prize: a marker with a blue tip, if you know what I mean

It amuses me that even in this vast array of bicycles, mine is easily spotted as the most overloaded. (Look for the heavy hybrid with the two huge panniers.)
