Isnt this one of those corporate made-up holidays created just to sell more greeting cards and cow bells?

I'm going to be in Michigan without my own bike and not going to work. But I'm determined to find a bike and get a ride in. And if I were here I'd definitely be in.

Bike to work in the winter? I would have never thought of doing that if there weren't this neat new website urging me to commit to it.

Indeed. I think you need a rest day or two. I hear the sofa is nice!

What are they giving away? Free Internet badges that you can post on social media? I don't see anything listed on the website.

Have you seen the condition of SteveO's bike?

Last time I rode with Steve O (that was our windy Alexandria ride, Boomer), it was dark, so I didn't get a look at the condition...but I could hear it! Lube that chain, buddy!

FWIW, BicycleSpaceDC has something (small) planned

http://www.bicyclespacedc.com/our-blog/2015/2/11/heres-to-you-winter-warriors

We'll be positioned on 15th Street NW just south of Massachusetts Avenue. Roll past and be counted!

We'll reward our hearty winter bicycle commuters with coffee and bagels at our shop at 700 5th Street NW. (Reality check: we'll have limited quantities of refreshments

Free breakfast...in Edmonton.

If any of make it there by bike, it should be like free meals for a month.

Also, did the sponsors consider making Winter Bike to Work Day on Friday the 13th may not be the wisest idea?

Well, in some cultures the 13th is a lucky number... it's really the English speaking bits of the world that seem to have a major problem with Friday the 13th, I believe (someone will certainly correct me if I am wrong on this).

Correct, triskaidekaphobia is a western thing. Good read on it here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/donna-henes/friday-13th_b_1418812.html .

Of course most of the participants, with the exception of Russia and Turkey, appear to be from the Western World: http://winterbiketoworkday.org/2015-participant-map/ . Although interesting footnote, there are some "winter" bike to work day participants from New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, etc, which are all on the other side of the equator.

I've only been riding sporadically this winter, but for some reason, I decided to ride today, despite the colder-than-usual temperatures. I forgot about this Winter Bike to Work Day site/promotion/whatever, so I can't say it encouraged me to ride.

Re Friday the 13th, I remember reading in one of the Ian Fleming James Bond novels that the Bond character would specifically choose to fly on Friday the 13th because he thought fewer people would be flying that day. I guess it would give him more personal space or better access to the vodka martinis. In the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," there's a vague reference to this. Bond throws a knife past a suspected organized crime boss, hitting a wooden calendar on the wall, on the space marking the 14th day of the month.

Draco: But today is the thirteenth, Commander.
James Bond: I'm superstitious.
