Since it seems we're going with the Bollard Busters name, I created a new team thread.
Kudos to komorebi for getting a flag for us. Way to go!!!

Well, great, chilly and wet commute this AM... hoping you all good oodles of miles in this AM and above all had a good and safe time doing it!

Ad maiora!

Thanks Steve!

Hi Pete and the other team members!

I am Rockford 10 - Kathleen. I live in Falls Church and commute to Tysons when I can (the snow and ice are a no-go through ffx county) (sorry). I do longer rides on the weekend when life isn't so complicated - this past weekend was a disaster! Riding around the neighborhood to get in 2 miles at 9 pm isn't much fun.

It is possible they know me at Arrowine for my Taleggio habit. I ride so that I can drink wine and eat cheese.

I'm married to someone on another team. We can chat about trash talking later.

Hey team!
Here's where we are as of right now:

12. Team 4: Bollard Busters BAFS2015: 1,616 points (876 miles)

Powerful P: 369 points (13 days, 239 miles)
Steve O: 232 points (11 days, 122 miles)
kathleen k: 232 points (13 days, 102 miles)
Karen B: 226 points (11 days, 116 miles)
Komorebi L: 206 points (10 days, 106 miles)
Trey H: 182 points (7 days, 112 miles)
Christopher F: 135 points (6 days, 75 miles)
Kristina D: 34 points (3 days, 4 miles)

Amalitza has also assigned us fithsparo. I don't know if we will also get a 10th rider or not. Once fithsparo's miles are added we will move to the middle of the pack.

I advised Kristina that any rides she took between Jan 1 and the happy hour can be manually added (Kristina - did you have any rides during that time? If so, do you need help adding them to Strava?)

I'm a little under where I'd like to be at this point, but I plan to get to about 100/week by the end. In the spirit of Freezing Saddles, the point is not to ride more or less than me (or anyone else): the point is to ride your bike more in the winter than you would have had you not joined the game. And to have fun. If you do that, then you are a winner.

Keep an eye on the events calendar and on the Forum for group rides that you might want to join. This weekend is a Pedals & Pints ride (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8032-Port-City-Brewing-Company-Pedals-N-Pints-January-17th-11am), for instance.

Fantastic!

All hail our glorious captain, and a big welcome to Fithsparo - BTW, please do introduce yourself to the gang!

Should we try to organize a team ride this weekend? I am interested - preferably Saturday or Sunday (afternoon only for Sunday due to family commitments).

Also, does anyone else have MLK off next Monday?

Some good points today. Apologies for being the lurker in the group. I'm Chris. I am a recidivist Arlingtonian: I grew up here, moved away after college, and have now returned many years later to a much changed (mostly for the better) place. I live off Nellie Custis, near the bottom (west side) of the Col de Lorcom.

My last stop was nine years in Switzerland, where I was more enthusiastic than talented as a cyclist. With all the mountains at our disposal, I always fancied myself more a Quintana than a Cavendish, but the only thing I can beat those guys in is being old.

I am thrilled to see how active the cycling scene is here, and in debt to Powerful Pete for sucking me into BAFS. In general, I'm good for the cold but stay off the ice. I'm also about to steal away for an extended ski weekend, so I'll have some points to make up.

Anyways, glad to take part. Thanks for having me.

I'm 80% for the Pedals and Pints ride on Saturday. Powerful P, if you want to ride down together, we can do that. I figure with the to & from plus the ride (depending on routes) should be 25-30 miles on the day.

Powerful Pete

Salutations to Chris!

Steve O, I will ask for permission - should at the very least be able to ride downhill with you... might even participate in the alcoholic bits of the ride.

Hey - I'm probably in for the Pints ride on Saturday, I don't have anything else that day. Let me know where we should meet up. Can I bring a friend? He might possibly be on another team.

I'm planning to take off Monday from work (slave drivers I work for don't believe in Federal holidays). So long as the weather is nice, I might be up to going out on a ride.

Hey - I'm probably in for the Pints ride on Saturday. Let me know where we should meet up.

I'm still 80%, so there's a possibility I might not make it. Should know by tomorrow. Either way, how about meeting at the Bluemont caboose, allowing PP to triangulate in? From there it's about 7 miles (according to Google) via Glen Carlyn, etc. & Holmes Run. If we depart at 10, should be there in plenty of time.

Yay new team standings and welcome Christopher and Fithsparo! Hoping to make up for my missed days through the 8th with some extra mileage. Komorebi, I'd be up for Embassy sweeps and/or a potential ride on Monday afternoon (may or may not make it out for some laps on Sunday at Hains Point - will keep the list informed) as I will be out-of-pocket on Saturday.

Up for just about any riding this weekend, with adequate permission on the home front...

As you will note from the pointless standings, I am firmly committed to Hains Points loops... the more, the merrier. :)

And a pox on the thread interlopers! Don't use the name of our captain in vain. His awesomeness allows him to swoop into any thread - you should simply be thankful he has allowed you to bask, however briefly, in his ethereal presence!

Oh, and thanks for the drink recipe... I have a... significant weakness for anything involving Gin. Or Vodka. Or red wine... but I digress.

Hi, I'm Deirdre and just was added to your team. I live in Westover and regularly commute to work in Courthouse (unless its below 25 degrees). Doing a couple inside trainer classes this winter, but will be riding outside on the weekends. I'm off on Monday and would be interested in a ride. Would love to catch up with Sat ride somewhere along the route, can you post up a cue sheet? Pete, I'm always up for loops at Hains Point too!

Welcome, Deirdre!!! We are delighted to have you. I also live near Westover (how come we've never bumped in to each other in the neighborhood?). If you are able to meet at the Bluemont caboose (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zEvc2a-Mh8bY.k9uYh4qsoYsw) at 10 on Saturday, you can convoy down to Alexandria for the Pedals & Pints (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=55&day=2015-1-17&c=4) ride.

Your addition to the team has put us only 100 points behind our arch enemies, Team 5 (so disorganized they cannot even come up with a name (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8024-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B%26%2365038%3B-%26%239829%3B-6)).

You may want to just ride straight to Port City if you are coming from DC. Our route will be coming in from the other side. We'll see you there.

I don't know the Pedals & Pints route. You can check with them if you don't think you'll make it by the 11am starting time. Or just go there and then catch up to the group if it's already left. I think the ride itself will be pretty slow.

Sounds great. Want to meet at 1:00 pm on Monday in front of the Australian embassy (1601 Mass Ave. NW) and go from there? I might also try to do some Hains Points laps before or after -- or both! -- if anyone wants to get some more miles in.

Also, not all of the countries in the Australia and Oceania group have embassies in DC. If anyone knows of places where there are mass flag displays -- travel agencies, visa offices, international student centers, etc -- please PM me. I know of a couple, but I'll refrain from posting them here in case those dastardly other teams are trying to steal our ideas. ;)

Don't forget this rule:

2) Photos can only be used once to represent one country. Photos of mass UN-style flag displays (hall of nations, Org of American States, etc) can only represent one nation and cannot be reposted for other nations.

Parsing this rule carefully might allow for a bunch of photos taken in one location, but I think that would violate the spirit of the game.

Right, which is why I was soliciting team input on other mass flag displays. Personally, I'd be game for a field trip to the UN plaza in New York, but that seems like a long way to go to capture just one flag.

I work for a tiny company and we actually don't know what our official holidays are. So I probably am working at least some of Monday. I'll come at lunchtime to meetcha and at least chip in on the first couple photos. Then depending on my timing I may have to head back out.

If you look carefully at the standings you will note that we are currently in 8th place with 1,490 miles. 9th, 10th and 11th place actually have more miles but fewer points. Hence the value of getting a ride in every day--even if it's short. Well done, teammates.

I lied. My train rolled into Union Station at 11:35 PM. Some of the other teams are getting together after work for informal get togethers. Seems like a fun idea.

Reply and let me know what days of the week are good and what days of the week are bad.
Alternatively, we could meet at one of the weekly Coffee Clubs (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7078-Weekly-Coffee-Gatherings).

I am certainly up for a Friday CC - the one in DC is just a hop, skip and freewheel from my office.

As to after work events, I can do most evenings as long as I can plan ahead of time (1-2 days ahead)... Maybe mid-week with a few Hains Points laps thrown in to make it just a wee bit masochistic?

In all seriousness, seeing the lack of bike facilities in Atlanta made me realize just how good we have it here in DC.

Great idea, Steve. I'm in the same boat as Powerful Pete -- I could make it to the original FCC or on most evenings, with sufficient advance notice.

Looks like Powerful Pete got in some good miles with ccfinger, too.

Hey all,
Some of the other teams are getting together after work for informal get togethers.

Since my commute is opposite (I think) of everyone else's (I go from Falls Church to Tysons), it would be a little tricky for me. I can get to TMCC (Vienna), but a boy has trumpet practice at 7:30 on Thursdays, which just messes up the time. I could try Wednesday in Shirlington, but it's still early to get up and late to get to work. Friday at Java Shack is doable, but the boy has full band practice on Friday mornings.

TL; DR - make it an after-work happy hour, in Virginia, on a Thursday, I'm more likely to be able to make it.

I'm good for any night but Thursdays and FCC at Java Shack is always good if I can get out of bed early enough.

I'm lucky in that I live and work in Arlington, so Java Shack or Shirlington would work best for me. As for outside meet ups, my schedule is pretty unpredictable and changes week to week so a couple of days notice will help me to participate. Maybe the Arlington Loop or Hains Point for a group outing?? I'm game.

Hi team,

I'm usually at Java Shack (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?4706-Friday-Coffee-Club-II) on Fridays, but this Friday (Jan 30) I can make it down to Swings (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7078-Weekly-Coffee-Gatherings). I realize this works for some but not others, but if you are a sometimes FCCer or FCC virgin and work in DC, come this Friday, and at least a few of us Busters can meet up.

Then next Friday (Feb 7) I'll be back at FCCII, which I think can work for toonces, PP, me and kdugan with rockford as a maybe. Everyone welcome at either or both (except phatboing).

I'll also think about an after work meet up which is better for Rockford--especially Thursdays.

PP - is ccfinger following this thread? Don't want him to miss out. Tell him to log in at least every couple of days to keep up with goings on.

BTW - we were given a new team member, windy roads (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/member.php?5621-Windy-Roads), but I don't think he is paying attention. I have PMed him and put a comment on his Strava feed (https://app.strava.com/athletes/7346186), but have heard nothing back.

Lastly, we keep battling it out with those annoying Bears, so try to do at least a sleaze ride every day.

We need to pick up Fithsparo. He's been heroically doing short sleaze rides despite his injuries. But we need to let him convalesce.

If the rest of us will just add 1-2 miles a day--a little extra detour--we can make up 100+ points a week. And definitely get at least the 11-point minimum every day. We've fallen to 10th and are being mocked by the BiPolar Bears, so it's time to show them what we can do!

We have put some space between us and the 9th place, Revolution 9, team. (Seems with their name, that's where they are supposed to end up anyway.)

As you may be able to tell from my Strava feed, I am not comfortable riding in the snow or the ice or the slush, but I've managed at least 1 mile every day so far. About a day after snow, the roads in my neighborhood are just fine for my 28 slicks. I ride in the middle of the road, slowly, so I can see any dangers ahead (I'm generally riding at night). One night, because of the ice, I drove my bike to a place I knew would be OK. For a couple of snow days, I rode my kid's old mountain bike. Those tires were knobby (they are all worn down in the middle, but not on the edges) and the seat is very low so I can always put two feet down.

Yesterday, I got out early, while it was still raining/sleeting and didn't have any problems. Today, I can ride around the neighborhood streets after work and shouldn't have too many issues.

So, no secrets, just timing and moxie.

Hey team!

I think we can easily fend off the Prims. The question is, can we catch the team that doesn't even know what to call itself?

Plenty of opportunities to ride this weekend. There are two pi(e) rides: one in the morning (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8232-Freezing-Saddles-Pi-Day-Ride) and one in the afternoon (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8255-BikeArlington-Pi-Day-Pie-Ride-Call-For-Ride-Marshalls!).

Then on Sunday is WABA's Vasa Ride (http://www.waba.org/events/rides/vasa-ride/). Surprisingly, registration is still open.

And then there is the final push on March 19 itself, when us last gaspers will meet down at Hains Point for the FSLNHPP (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7864-Freezing-Saddles-2015-At-Least-Yer-Not-in-Kiev-Comrade&p=102186#post102186). Both Fithsparo and I were there last year.
