Welcome folks! It was good to meet (most) everybody at BAFSHH last night!!!!

EDIT: Here's a list of Team 5's members:

HEART: Team Five

First things first - I'm by no means volunteering to be team captain by posting this! I'm a total Strava newb and have to manually enter my miles. I'm a troglodytic luddite when it comes to GPS-enabled bike adventures. (but I'm getting better...)

I believe Boomer snapped a pic of the Heart team in attendance at the happy hour - feel free to post it up here.

I guess the first thing would be for us to decide on a team name? Or pick a Captain (Oh captain)?

Obviously it should have something to do with our merciless, black hearts, since we will not only crush the other teams' points, but their spirits as well.

I'm happy to be the captain since I did it last year, unless someone else wants to do it. In the meantime, I can set up to Strava team just using our team number for now. It can be changed to our team name once we pick it.

Hi all. Steve, thanks for stepping up as captain and getting us going. Sorry I missed happy hour - family.

Other teams seem to be introducing themselves, which is probably useful.

I'm Gillian. I live in Arlington, cherrydale to be exact (near spout run / the s curve of doom), and work in dc, near the state department/Lincoln memorial. Other bikey hats I wear include chair of Arlington's bac and founder of Kidical Mass Arlington. I'm hopefully good for points everyday, but don't expect to be putting in any long rides (for reasons that will be clear soon enough). For team challenges, I can usually meet during lunch on weekdays in downtown dc or near-the-river arlington. Weekends I'm usually arlington-bound with kids in tow.

Look forward to meeting yall. Oh and I have no name suggestions. My four year old suggests "Heart Maker Shop". My more-creative-than-me husband suggestions something like "Courtland Milloy's heart" or "Lon Anderson's cardiologist"

Hello all! I met several of you at the HH. I'm in central Arlington (Alcova Heights - hence the name). My normal commute is from there to the FCC which is at the DC landing of the 14th St bridge. I ride pretty regularly, but usually not too far - my commute is 11 miles round trip. I seem to be on parallel with Gillian, who's one point ahead of me at the moment (which made me consider going out for another quick 2 miles ride tonight; sanity prevailed).

I am game for weekend rides of middling length (20-30 miles) though may have my 15-yo son along too (we've done the Arlington loop together and a 22-mile out&back). I can't ride Sunday afternoons, since I assistant-coach my daughters softball team and we practice 12-3.

I like Gillian's suggestion, but offer "Courtland Milloy's Frozen Heart" as an alternative. By the way, googling "Blackheart" takes you to a lingerie site and is not recommended when you are on the Navy/Marine Corps Internet. I am open to other team names too and will try to think of some other suggestions. We could also go with something not heart-related.

Go Blackhearts!

Hi all! This is my first year participating in the freezing saddles competition. I met a lot of you at the happy hour and hopefully will meet the rest of you sometime soon. i do most of my biking to and from work, which is 9 miles each way from Old Town to Ballston. I volunteered to organize happy hours, and some of us were talking about a potential group ride or meet up at a central happy hour location. I'll work on organizing that for an upcoming Saturday. See you all on the trails, and looking forward to crushing the competition with you!

Howdy to my fellow Team 5 members. I live near the East Falls Church Metro station in North Arlington, commute most days to Capitol Hill, and try to get rides in on the weekends. I am most flexible on the weekends for meeting up but can sometimes make week nights work. For our team name, my mind keeps going to a pirate theme, something like Team Dread Pirate Black Heart, striking fear in the competition. We could also wear eye patches and other pirate gear at any Freezing Saddles events. Argh!!!!

Anyhow, please let me know if you have any problems with your rides showing up on Strava or the Freezing Saddles website. Also, the key to Freezing Saddles is to ride as many days as you can regardless of distance. The rider who does a few miles almost every day will will beat the rider who just does a century every weekend.

I'm Erin, and was at the Happy Hour last Friday. I was so pleased to meet you! Love the Pirate theme concept.

Here is a quick Point question, please: so if I ride 10 miles in the morning, I'll get 10 points plus mileage points. Now suppose I ride again 5 miles in the evening. Will I get another 10 points or just mileage points, please?

Thanks,
Erin

Erin,

You get 10 points for each day you ride at least one mile and a point for every mile that you ride that day. So, using your example, you would get 25 points, 10 points for riding over a mile today, 10 points for your first ride, and 5 points for your second ride.

Hi Erin! I think the answer is you would just get mileage points for the evening ride. You only get the 10 points once each day for riding more than one mile.

Well, since I started the thread... I'm Clay, been riding bikes to and from work for about 7 or 8 years now. I've been in and out of bike shops as a mechanic for about 20 years now, and will gladly try to be of any mechanical assistance!!! I've started racing in the MABRA road/crit calendar this year with the VeloWorks-Spokes team, so that would partially explain the big miles I tend to put in on the bike. First year competing in the frozen saddles competition but I had a lot of fun doing the nat'l bike challenge this summer so I figured I'd give this a try, too!!!

BTW, for team challenges, it's helpful to know where people are and where/when they're willing to ride. E.g. I'm not willing to go to Maryland, so organizing a team thing involving Maryland means I'm out (not that that should preclude it, but if a bunch of us are non-Marylanders, then it's not really worth organizing something that direction).

Good advice in general!

Is anyone on this team from MD?

I think this is a Virginia-dominated team and happy hour locations will reflect such allegiances.

I am in central Arlington. Best chances for me to ride are Saturdays or early Sunday mornings (done by 11:30 or so). I might be able to get away for a lunchtime ride in central DC (I work just south of the national mall on 12th ST SW). Haines Point is quite close.

We should settle on a team name to build esprit de corps and have something better to shout at the competition than "Go Team 5!". The suggestions so far are for a Courtland Milloy-themed name or a pirate-themed name. I like the pirate themed named because it is fun, it gives me an excuse to talk like a pirate and I'd rather not give Courtland Milloy any more exposure. Nonetheless, I will go with whatever the team wants to do. Please try to share your thoughts by tonight.

I'm David. I met several at happy hour, and I'm looking forward to meeting the rest at some team event. I don't do lots of big rides, but I'm pretty good to ride every day, despite the weather, and as a commuter, the miles will add up (to a big win for the team, I hope). I did BAFS last year for the first time as a new cycling commuter, without studded tires, or special gear, or experience, and I managed to ride every day, even if just around my neighborhood, and ended up in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard (much to my surprise). This forum is a really superb resource for all your winter riding questions; it got me through last year's challenge. Let's all get out there and ride! Remember, a short ride on most days will get you more points than a long ride on rare occasions.

So, when's our team happy hour?

Hi All, I am Boomer and met many of you at the HH. Sorry for my late posting as I'm a newbie to the Forum and just discovered that our team had its own thread.
I live in West Falls Church near the WOD trail at mile 8.0 where it intersects with Virginia Lane (near Shrevewood Elementary School, which is a great staging area for weekend rides westward on the WOD, fyi) .
This is my first FS but I have been a year round bike commuter from home to downtown DC since 1990, and served as a WABA commuter mentor in years past. I regularly commute 3x/week to DC for a round-trip of 24 miles, and try to do at least one 40-60 mile range ride on the weekends.
I have done most of the WABA and bike shop sponsored rides in the NOVA area (15 to 25 mile range) and know the street bike routes pretty well. I've volunteered as a ride marshall for several half, metric, Gran Fondo and full centuries rides, including Paul's Ride for Life and Bike to the Beach, as well as regularly organize/marshal ad hoc rides for my cycling friends using the Greater Washington Area Bicycle Atlas. I'm available to ride on most Saturday or Sunday afternoons to just about anywhere in the DC area, or Mon, Tues or Friday after work hours if it is near the WOD, Custis or 4 mile run trails and can be tacked onto my daily commute. I'd be happy to suggest/marshall rides for our team once I know what the range/comfort level is of the team members. In any event, I look forward to getting to know you and riding together. Ride on!

As a former (and still part-time) Navy guy, I like the pirate/nautical theme (and besides, screw that Milloy guy).

Given the white crust over my wheels (and shoes and tights, etc.), I offer the name "The Salty Dogs"

According to the interwebs:
Salty Dog may refer to:

Salty dog (cocktail), a drink made with vodka or gin and grapefruit juice

Salty dog (slang), a slang phrase with several meanings:
ďSalty DogĒ is nautical slang for an experienced sailor who has spent much of his life aboard a ship at sea. A salty dog is often given increased credibility by ship mates in matters pertaining to ship-board life and duties. Also known as an ďold salt.Ē [1]

Another meaning of the term "Salty Dog" comes from the archaic practice of rubbing salt into the coat of one's favorite dog as a flea repellent. Therefore, one's "salty dog" is one's favorite person, best friend, etc... This is the meaning of the line in "Salty Dog Blues": "Let me be your salty dog, or I don't wanna be your man at all." The phrase could also have a sexual meaning. The lyric "Honey, let me be your salty dog" could also be translated to mean "Let me be your sexual partner."

"Salty dog" also means ornery, as in the T-Bone Walker tune "Ain't Salty No More."

And somewhat off-topic, here's my "salty dog":7438

As for a ride, it looks like I'm leading a Kidical Mass Arlington ride on SUNDAY afternoon in Pentagon City. The ride itself will be short, but coming from N. Arlington, the round trip will be some solid miles. Details soon.

Sjclaeys: Team Dread Pirate Black Heart

Me: Salty Dogs, Courtland Milloy's Frozen Heart
Dasgeh: Davy Jonesís Bakfiets, Heart Maker Shop, Courtland Milloy's heart, Lon Anderson's cardiologist

Based on general discussion, it seems the Courtland Milloy ones are out. There are certain forum members who take exception to use of the term "Dread" in team names.

Looking at "likes" etc., the names that seem to have some traction are:
Black Hearts (on our HH name tags & sorta default original name)
Davy Jonesís Bakfiets (dasgeh)
Salty Dogs (me and DKel (I missed that DKel had already suggested this one when I re-suggested it))
A pirate themed name that's not listed above (from among Boomer's one-word pirate themed names or DKel's two word pirate themed names -[we could choose from among those after the voting if the one/two word pirate names are chosen]

I could add or subtract from this list and do a quick survey monkey poll (or we could just vote here). Before people start voting, are there any other suggestions (or did I miss anything)?

I could add or subtract from this list and do a quick survey monkey poll (or we could just vote here). Before people start voting, are there any other suggestions (or did I miss anything)?

OK, well that kind of killed things for agreeing on a name. My vote is still for the Salty Dogs given the reasons posted by Alcova cyclists that it refers to the salt on our tires and has a nautical theme that fits with acting like pirates rather than referring to dogs themselves. Of course, we can always stick with Team 5, which is boring but unlikely to offend.

I like this idea - I'm trying to work my schedule so I can attend.

I might be able to do it too depending on parenting duties. It is about an 8 mile ride from my neighborhood in Madison Manor, so that it an option, though will depend on the condition of Holmes Run Trail.

Boomer2U

So here's I think everything that's been suggested so far:
Boomer: Buccaneers, Blimeys, Cutlasses, Dungbies , Freebooters, Hornswaggles , Swashbucklers, Scallywags, Seadogs, Shark bait
Sjclaeys: Team Dread Pirate Black Heart
DKel: Merciless black hearts, Scurvy scalawags, Salty dogs, Rolling raiders, Biking buccaneers, Pedalin' pirates

For those team members who are new to the forum, I wanted to let you know that forum members meet for coffee at a number of places throughout the week. There is a thread on the forum listing them all, which I will find. However, for now, know that a group meets at what was the Java Shack in Clarendon on Fridays from around 7:15 to sometime after 8:00 (I don't know when it ends because I leave as soon as Steve O shows up). Another group (sometimes people who go to Java Shack) also meet on Friday's at Swiggs near G St & 17th St. If you can, please stop by because these are a great way to meet others and have some good coffee.

Here is the thread describing all of the coffee clubs: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7078-Weekly-Coffee-Gatherings. I highly recommend Hump Day Coffee Club that meets at Best Buns in Shirlington on Wednesdays. Great group and the bacon cheddar scones that are only available that day are incredible. Plus, as far as I know, Steve O never goes to the coffee club, so it is win-win-win.

But then we'd have to pick between Anna and Elsa...

Honestly, I don't care, as long as it's not offensive to someone on the team. It seems that "Snot Rockets" and anything dog (or dawg, because duh) related falls into the latter category. But maybe we should be riding a little more... What's it gonna take to get Bill, Erin and Maddie out on some sleeze rides?

I have never seen Frozen, never intend to, and do not want to have anything to do with it. On the other hand, I'd be all for a Lego Movie reference because:

Ok picture this. We're all on a group ride, and someone yells, 'Team Snot Rocket, assemble!' We all get together, Saturn-class snot rockets on deck, then on the count of three we all launch them (in a well-aimed, predetermined direction), and then blast off to rack up more sick points for our team.

Now I ask you, what part of that is even remotely offensive???

But yeah, it doesn't have to be our team name. Maybe more like a theme, or a team cheer?

Right now I'm liking Team "They who must not be named" or just Death Eaters. Or, wait, no, Team Dementor, or Team My Patronus is a Bike!

Let's keep the discussion going...

I never said I was offended by snot rockets... just that I really didn't like the name.

I think there's been a dozen better names suggested, but if there's consensus on SR from others, I'm not going to lose any sleep if that winds up being our name.

On the upside, it seems we've been keeping RCannon and Steve O here egging us on instead of going out and racking up miles, so we might as well keep squabbling.

Or we could meet in secret, decide on a name, and then refuse to tell anyone else what it is, especially not certain lurkers.

My solution for fogging glasses has been to try as much as possible to direct my breath away from my glasses, particularly when stopped. It sounds kind of silly, I know, but I kind of blow out instead of exhaling normally, and it seems to keep things from fogging up. The good thing is that nobody can see my awkward mouth position, because my face is covered. It's totally dorky, but it works for me. Yeah...dorky...I go with what comes naturally.

Last attempt at a team name:

1. The cyclists with no name
2. The no namers
3. Those who refused to be named
4. Team anonymous
5. The Dysfunctional Cyclists
6. Team Psychotic Democracy
7. Team Gridlock

Or we can just give our team naming rights to whomever winds up on top of this week's team leaderboard, to chose as they see fit, and put an end to our misery...

Not sure how I, of all us dysfunctional children, got tagged, but aye aye, cap'n!

you can do it any way you want.

Alrighty, then... Let's see how complicated I can make this. The goal is consensus, so...

Each team member picks & posts their three favorite names, in no particular order. Post by midnight Friday. If there's a single clear consensus winner (i.e. everyone who votes selects that name), that'll be the name. If there are a few that are tied or nearly so (say within 1), we'll have a vote-off and try to get to 20 pages on this thread. If enough Team [redacted] members are at the pints ride, as determined by Cap'n Steve, they'll pick a run-off winner then. With a little luck this will lead to a 6-way tie and we can argue till March.

I gave Dasgeh her "I hate dogs" veto, but no more vetoes.

In the next post I'll recap as near a complete list of all the names suggested as I could be bothered to do, but I took the liberty of filtering those into a top 12 so you needn't slog through the whole list.

37 points for me today. Looks like only Boomer and Harry met the challenge today.

In other news, 9 out of 10 on our team rode today! That's going to be the way to push the team ahead, much more so than miles. The real competition in the game (for the moment) is for third place, and there are five teams that are all within 75 points of each other; we are currently in fifth place, but only 11 points off the third place team.

But here's the bad news: we're only up by 10 points, and those sleazy Dozers are probably out there right now, scheming to catch us. So, since the roads are still fine, let's shoot for 10/10 scoring points today with some after work sleazing and see if we can hold onto 3rd.

But here's the bad news: we're only up by 10 points, and those sleazy Dozers are probably out there right now, scheming to catch us. So, since the roads are still fine, let's shoot for 10/10 scoring points today with some after work sleazing and see if we can hold onto 3rd.

:-)

Oh, a screenshot from a week-and-a-half ago when you guys were on top... those must be fond memories!

IIRC, we were about 7th then and at least 300 points behind you. Now we're basically tied! I like those trends...

Meh. This doesn't make me angry enough to go out and ride six more miles to put us on top again. If someone else on my team wants to go for it, though, I'd be all for that...

now, since i didn't respond to the "apologies in advance" thread - I've got a conference tomorrow that won't allow me to put in any miles. (in my best canuck accent) Surry!

how 'bout this enticement: anyone on our team that rides tomorrow for more than 1 mile (1/27/15) gets a beer on me at whatever/whenever the next team 5 HH ends up being!

And I have and we now have a nice hold on #3. Now for the sad news. Like Harry, work will get in the way of my riding for the rest of the week. I should be able to put in a few miles in Tuesday and Wednesday, but then I go to NYC through Saturday. My plan was to do some Citibike rides, but we will see how things are up there after the storm.

Now solidly in 3rd with a 46 point cushion.

Be careful tomorrow, but try to sleaze something out. My neighborhood is flat enough that I could "flintstones" for a mile if need be.

I think I can ride in just about anything (so far), but I don't know how many extra miles I can put in beyond my 15 mile round trip commute. This competition is killing me! Last week was my biggest-mileage week since August! That said, I'm pretty sure I could do a happy hour on Friday, as Colleen suggested, especially if Harry M is buying...

fwiw, roads here in Arlington are clear -- husband just left with the kids on the bakfiets. I'm telecommuting but will be sure to get in a ride later. Happy hour is probably not in the cards for me, but I will gift my beer to whomever has the longest ride today ;-) Oh, and sjclaeys, it sounds like the storm was a dud in NYC, so you should be fine on Citibike. If you can find a working kiosk.

I'm opposed to the imposition of a single hour time limit implied by the "happy hour" - would it be possible to rename the Happy Hour to Indeterminate Time Period of Indeterminate Enjoyability (with a potential for "meh" or resolute apathy)?

Long ride for me: seems perfect! If anyone is interested in guiding me out from the intersection of 4MRT and MVT, that would make my life simpler. It looks pretty easy on the map, but it's always nice to be with someone who's been there before. Hmm...wonder if the route will be clear enough for me to ride my fixie out there by Friday?

BTW, how the hell was it so easy to agree on "indifferent indeterminately timed attitude adjustment period" when we couldn't even agree on a team name?!?

I could meet you at the 4MRT & MVT to head south - it's really pretty easy to get to the pub from there.

say, 6:45-ish?

i'm wondering about adequate bike parking in the vicinity... i think the closest racks are down towards the Bike and Roll, on the Strand.

weather looks pretty cooperative, except for the "Wind gusts of up to 46 mph" part.

So far a good week for us -- at the moment, we're the top team in points this week, gaining good ground over the teams closest to us in the standings:
+ 75 points on #1 Octothorpe
+ 54 points on #2 "Rule 9"
+ 170 points on #4 Doozy Dozers
+ 227 points on #5 lucky pr1m3s
Keep pedaling -- sustained effort/sleazing over time makes the difference!
