Do you like cycling? Do you like pictures? Do you use (not even necessarily like) social media?

DO YOU LOVE TAKING PICTURES WHILST CYCLING AND THEN POSTING THEM TO THE SOCIAL MEDIAS???!

If the answer is yes to absolutely everything above, I have a niche contest for you!

Here are the rules:

1. Be registered for Freezing Saddles.
2. Take pictures of Freezing Saddles related stuff during the contest period.
3. Tweet or Instagram those pictures with the hashtag #BAFS2015.

The best picture/group of pictures (as judged by a panel of, ahem, experts) will win a prize, to be awarded at the end of competition pointless prize jamboree.

IT IS THAT EASY!

I know what you are thinking..."Hey Subby...Jerkface...I'm not 16...I don't use Twitter or Instagram...I lovingly curate all my stuff on Photobucket."

That is awesome. Can't wait to see it. I'm lazy though, and this is about what I can manage - which is hashtagged stuff on Twitter or Insta (as the kids call it).

So take pics of a beautiful sunrise on your ride to work or your epic New Year's ride or your failed attempts at trying to mount studded tires on your commuter or what it looks like 5 seconds after you wipe out on some ice (been there!). Just take Freezing Saddles pics and hashtag them #BAFS2015 and you're good to go!

3. Tweet or Instagram those pictures with the hashtag #FS2015.

You're going to have to wade through a fair amount of Nigerian reggae-dancehall and Farming Simulator 2015 images.

I was thinking of offering a similar instagram based prize, and found that the following hashtags don't turn up any results:

#BAFS2015
#FreezingSaddles2015

#freezingsaddles only turns up two results, one is a photo of the award ceremony from last year and the other is a cold horse saddle.

Oh well gee, I guess I should have checked that :\

#BAFS2015 it is (unless you want that, then I can make it something else or if you want to team up we can do that too!)

Any chance you'd add Flickr to your list? It supports tagging as well as non-square and high quality images.

We could probably pull this into the contest app too -- or at least pull some images in. Now that the stravalib supports image streams, this should be reltively easy. (Americancyclo asked about that last year.)

This would be Instagram only, of course. (And only Instagram images that get associated with Strava activities.)

Probably not but that shouldn't preclude someone from running a flicker #BAFS2015 contest if they want. I know a decent number of cyclists use flickr. Just not me.

I am thinking having a photostream on the main page.

I need to clear out the db and update the configs -- start with just the BA team to pull in some data.

I seem to be doing something wrong. I am putting #BAFS2015 in the instagram description, but pictures aren't showing up in the Freezing Saddles feed (so I don't know if they're showing up in the photo feed for the contest either). I tried posting one yesterday and one this morning.

Or do I need to tag a person as #BAFS2015? (I've just been putting that in the description).

What does it mean to "associate a picture with a strava activity"?

Any thoughts?

Is there anyplace to go see all the collected pictures? (other than just searching for BAFS2015 in instagram)

The hashtag #BAFS2015 is only for instagram. There is no direct connection to the Freezing Saddles website.

I believe that the photo has to be on instagram and associated with a ride on strava.

To link your strava and instagram accounts:

go to your Strava Profile>Settings>Social Connections.

authorize there and photos should start showing up on your strava rides. this probably doesn't work with manually entered rides.

The pictures have been great so far. If you want to see all of them at once, on your phone, go to Instagram and click on the search icon at the bottom of the screen, type #bafs2015 in the search box and choose HASHTAGS.

If you want to see them on a web site, try going here (you may have to login with your instagram id and authorize gramfeed): http://www.gramfeed.com/instagram/tags#bafs2015

I may expand the website to start scouring all the #BAFS2015 photos, though simply syncing with Strava fits a little more cleanly in the "keep Strava as authority db" model.

Thanks!

I got Instagram-->strava working (although it doesn't do a great job of picking the right activity to link to if you've done multiple rides in one day)

Now I just have to figure out how to get my handiwork to show up on the freezingsaddles.com home page where it belongs :-)

I think my problem might be caused by posting the picture to instagram after FS has already imported the Strava data. Even if the picture later gets associated with a particular ride, there's no trigger to sweep in the picture data since FS already has ingested the strava activity. For example, I took a picture on my morning ride, but didn't post it to instagram right away (and hadn't linked my strava & instagram accounts at that point anyway). Now that my accounts are linked, I'll have to take and post a picture on the ride home and see if that manages to find its way to the website.

I don't know if that's really something that needs to be "fixed" on the website... but lunkheads like me need to understand how to make it work.

btw, this is the picture I took this morning that I wanted to see on the website:

Nice photo! Maybe we will recheck photos for already-processed rides on a nightly basis. But only for the past day or so, since otherwise we would be making thousands of additional requests, which would push me over API limits.

Quick update -- I was correct about the problem. I took a picture tonight along my ride (I am a sucker for monuments) and posted to instagram right then. When I finished the ride, I saved in Strava as normal and Strava grabbed the photo from Instagram. When FS ingested the Strava activity, it grabbed the picture along with it and it's now on the FS daily photo feed.

So bottom line for those trying to make this work:
1. Use #BAFS2015 in the Instagram description
2. Associate your instagram with strava (via strava profile>settings>social connections)
3. Post any photos before you save the strava ride

This goes for folks that upload with a Garmin as well. I always post to Instagram before uploading my gps track to Strava

Ok, but will Strava only publish pictures "associated" with the ride? If I instagram a picture of dinner a few hours later, does that end up in my Strava and BAFS feeds?

kwarkentien
01-12-2015, 10:41 PM
In order to be associated with a ride, the photo must be posted to Instagram during the course of the ride or within a few minutes after you finish. So no, pictures from your dinner a few hours later will not link to your Strava ride.

Alcova cyclist
01-13-2015, 06:16 AM
The Strava-Instagram link doesn't seem to be that accurate. It might be as long as an hour for a photo before/after a ride for a photo to get grabbed by Strava. For example, I rode multiple times on Sunday, but Strava associated a picture I took in the middle of the 3rd ride (and didn't post until well after ride #3) with ride #2.

There is a simple "reject" process in Strava where you click a photo associated with the ride and in the bottom right corner click "unlink from Strava"

You can trigger a manual sync for an activity, it will then check your Instagram for any new unlinked photos within the time frame of your ride (something like 30-45 mins around the activity).

I agree it's annoying if you have multiple rides within than time window though. Occasionally I'll make sure I upload the ride and get the right photos on Instagram and sync'd to the first ride before finishing or Instagramming the second ride (this usually happens if I'm say, switching bikes or adding a trailer, etc).

Giant Kudos to the geniuses who put the photo feed on the FS home page. You inspired me to down lode the Instant Graham application thingy. I believe I may have actually, really, yes, posted a photograph, although my hand got pretty cold alternating between scratching my head and touching various spots on my phone screen.

So my picture shows up if you search on #bafs2015 in Instagram, but it's not finding its way to the Freezing Saddles home page.
Is that because it has to be associated with my ride first? I haven't uploaded my ride; I usually do that in the evenings, but sometimes it's a day or two later. Will Strava still figure it out? And if it's a day-old photo will it be skipped over for fresher ones?

Yes. And Yes. I think any Instagrams posted during a ride and up to 30 minutes after sync up with a Strava activity once the rise is up. It can take a few minutes for the sync to take place, even if you manually force the sync using the tool under the wrench icon to sync photos.

And if it's a day-old photo will it be skipped over for fresher ones?

I think so.

Yeah, I will change the logic to just show the last X (15? 18?) photos instead of the current day only.

I also will add a photos page to just show all of them. Maybe grouped by day.

I might pull in the non-sync'd photos from #bafs2015 tag too. Wouldn't be hard, just have to do a little work since current photo back end is tied to rides.

And lots of other things I want to do still. Probably this weekend.

I went ahead and provided a mechanism to fix this -- you can specify that you want photos refetched for a ride. See http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8081-New-quot-My-Rides-quot-feature-on-the-scoreboard-website

I don't know off-hand when (how often) that happens; refetches may have been set for just nightly, though that code may run every 20-30 mins. Obviously the testing of this feature has been extensive :)

Hi Hozn, mi instagram pics mysteriously stopped synching to my Strava rides on Feb 1st. I have tried to manually "resynch" them through the FS leaderboard "logon" button by pulling down my personal ride data, twice, but it still isn't working right. I'm using the #BAFS2015 hashtag on my instagram fotos, FYI. What am I doing wrong?

Do your photos show up on your strava feed? If not, that is the problem. You might need to disconnect your instagram account from strava and reconnect. I have had to do that recently. It immediately finds all the photos.

My Instagram photos stopped showing up on my Strava feed after 1/31. I just disconnected, and then reconnected my Instagram and Strava accounts, and then went to the FS Web page to resynch my photos and rides. That worked for one ride on Feb 7th, but then didn't work for the Instagram pics from my rides on Feb 4th or 11th. Don't ask me why????

I can't say that I speak for Subby, but I am not depending on the freezingsaddles website for the Photo Contest. From my point of view, the connection to the website is purely for vanity reasons.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I wanted to make sure that people know that I'll be pulling images directly from instagram for the contest. So don't worry about that part, if that's what keeps you up at night.

Yeah, what americancyclo said. There may be a bug in the sync (likely!), but the rides showing up in Strava that is a prereq for FS.
