View Full Version : Upcoming ABAC Events -- Mark your calendars

08-26-2014, 12:16 PM

I hope you're enjoying this wonderfully mild August. We've got some exciting plans coming up in the next two months, so please mark your calendars:

1) As there is no regular Monday BAC meeting in September, Megan and I are very excited to invited BAC-ers new and old to a meet-and-greet happy hour (RSVP there). We will meet at Chevy's, Pentagon City from 6:30pm-8:30pm on Tuesday, September 23rd, over nosh courtesy of Bike Arlington and Chevy's happy hour drink specials. While you're in the neighborhood, check out Arlington's first protected bike lane just one block away on S Hayes St between 15th St S and S Fern. Bring friends! Bring family! Bring the bike- and BAC-curious! We love seeing new faces.

2) Also in September, we have the long-planned meeting at Lee Hwy and Lynn St at 7:30am on Tuesday, September 16th. Many BAC members, including Cory Bilton, Chris Slatt, Megan Jones and Jakob Wolf-Barnett have worked hard to get representatives of ACPD, Arlington County, WABA and hopefully VDOT and NPS to this critical juncture. All are invited to join the conversation, where we'll have a short presentation and small group tours to identify the problems at this intersection, followed by a discussion of solutions. During the morning rush on both 9/16 and 9/17 ACPD will be out at the intersection conducting a safety campaign (issuing warnings to both motorists and cyclists who break the law).

3) We're back to our regular schedule in October, with our next BAC meeting on Monday, October 6 from 7-9pm at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. We look forward to welcoming familiar faces and new blood to this meeting. Look out for more details as we get closer to October - we'll be talking about priorities for the BAC in the near- and long-terms, and will have a bit of an introduction to the BAC for those who aren't as familiar with us.

4) Community events: There are lots of great rides and events happening in the area in the next couple months. To highlight the Arlington-focused rides:
-- October 4th is the Arlington Fun Ride to benefit Phoenix Bikes. Again, the 17-mile ride of the Arlington Loop will start and end in Crystal City, and there will be a shorter, flatter Family Ride brought to you by Kidical Mass Arlington.

-- September 14th, Kidical Mass Arlington is doing a meet-up ride with Kidical Mass DC.

-- October 8th is Walk and Bike to School Day, which is Arlington will be headed up by APS's new SRTS coordinator (hired, though not announced).

We look forward to seeing you guys out on the streets, on the trails, and in the meeting rooms! Have a great Labor Day!
