Bicyclespace posted the article yesterday, which is a good read. I posted the following comment after reading it:

I'm not entirely sure there's a good solution here: the law says two abreast unless it impedes the flow of traffic (e.g. when in single lane areas). On large group rides out there, almost everyone rides two abreast regardless. Cyclists on the ride do often call out "car back!", but less than half of the group riders who aren't already on the right move to the right, which leads to increasingly frustrated drivers, and that leads to dangerous interactions (initiation of which is the drivers fault almost all of the time).

I just keep to the right full time unless I'm passing other cyclists and keep an eye out for other cyclists who are heeding the warning and trying to merge in to the right. But the process is pretty broken. Plus add to that the horrible condition of the road which leads to having to swing out to the left a lot of the time to avoid potholes and road debris (which can kill road bike cyclists)... and yet, it's really the only appropriate artery for DC-based group rides to get out to the areas with great open road for training...

Any other thoughts?

Brendan

I do the same thing for the group rides. We rides two or three abreast fast and form single line when call out "Car Back". We're not blocking the roads. The drivers have to slow down for few seconds before they can pass. Some drivers are not happy about slow down before passing or don't want to see the cyclists on the road.

There are a lot impatience drivers in this DC area. When I rode in Portland OR, this is not an issue at all. When I ride on trail that cross the road, all drivers would stop and yield. I didn't have to wait.

I think the drivers need to be more educated and aware of cyclists on the road.

According the this article, Maryland drivers among dumbest in U.S and DC is last. It explains why many drivers don't want to share the roads with cyclist.

Interesting, in the 2010 GMAC Insurance article in the same paper, the conclusion was quite different.

Surprising that the numbers would drop so dramatically from 2010 to 2011, although it looks like 2009 numbers are more in line with 2011.

Garbage in, garbage out? How big is the survey group each year?
