Arlington's first Confident City Cycling class of the season is being held on May 12th!

Here is a quick course description:

"CCC1 (2 hrs.) covers basic bicycling information and on-bike skills such as: bicycle selection, fit, inspection, gearing, cadence, clothing, accessories, and bike handling basics like starting and stopping, riding straight, scanning, and signaling. Half of this class will be in the classroom and half will be on-bike practicing bike handling skills. You are invited to bring your bicycle to participate or if you do not bring a bike, you can watch others demonstrate bike handling skills. This class is a recommended preparation for CCC2. ($5 for WABA Members, $10 for non-members)
Location: Quincy Street Deck, Parking Deck (N 15th St. & Quincy St. Arlington, VA 22203)
Date: Thursday, May 12th, 6pm-8pm"

To find out more about the series of classes and for registration visit the BikeArlington Education Page (http://www.bikearlington.com/pages/biking-in-arlington/bike-education/).

We only have a few people signed up right now and can certainly accept many more--please pass this along to friends and family who might want to brush up on their cycling skills!

I participated in both of these classes last summer and found them helpful. The instructors were approachable and straightforward in how they covered the class topics. The hands-on bike portion was the best part. I learned what my skill level was (nonexistent) and I learned what I needed to practice to be safe (stopping, starting, turning, and oh god - signaling). I don't remember the cost, but it was minimal compared to what I got out of the classes.

I took both classes last summer and have been recommending them ever since. In fact, one of my friends wants to go this year and I'm planning to go with her as a refresher. Unfortunately, getting to Arlington by 6 pm on a work day, especially with a bike, is impossible.

Additional bicycling classes in Arlington, Fairfax, and Montgomery Counties are listed below. Smart Cycling--Traffic Skills 101 covers all the material in WABA's three Confident City Cycling series (CCC1, CCC2, plus CCC3) with less delay and hassle and with a lower ratio of students to instructor. Although the CCC classes have lower fees, they are no longer free and they no longer offer classroom instruction. I agree with the poster, that the on-bike instruction is the most valuable.
