View Full Version : Happy Hour Convoy Planning

Who wants to ride to Happy Hour alone? Definitely not me.

I plan to leave the 14th St Bridge CaBi station around 430, 445. Sociable pace. Pretty sure I remember how to get to Cap City, but no promises.

All are welcome. Either let me know you'll be there or be early so we don't leave without you.

I'm not sure my pace even makes it up to "sociable," but I can start out with you guys, and just get there a bit later if I can't keep up.

Just for clarification, the "14th Street CaBi station" is the one at Jefferson Memorial? There seem to be several CaBi stations in that area, and I don't want to be waiting around the wrong one.

Yes, that's the one. WAIT NO THAT'S TOTALLY NOT THE ONE. See Kel's post after this one. Thanks Kel. It's the station right before the ramp that leads to the bridge.

And don't worry about the pace - as much as I like happy hour, this is a no-drop ride.

Wait. Now I am totally confused. I thought it was the one closest to the bridge and the Jefferson Memorial...the one marked "No?" on the map above.

Arlingtonrider
03-21-2014, 07:56 PM
Could someone please re-post that map marked "YES" where the "NO?" is?

Otherwise everyone will get [more] confused [than we all already are].

Also, you all may want a good chaperone who can show you the best detour route. I haven't ridden it yet, but the route Rod Smith took today might be the best and shortest one, as well as the only one that keeps you on trails right up to the detour point. I'll try to check it out sometime next week.

It's hard to guess right now when detouring will be needed. The relevant part of the FMR trail was open around 8 am this morning, but closed tonight when I tried to come through at 7:05 pm.

Yes. This is the correct station.

For those unfamiliar with getting there, I might suggest taking the (broad) sidewalk down Ohio Drive and East Basin. East Basin splits and one side is the entrance ramp to 395, so all rules of the road are off.

Alternatively, I would be happy to meet people at L'Enfant Plaza or thereabouts a few minutes earlier and ride over to the meeting spot. He hasn't weighed in yet, but dbb also works in the area and is likely happy to escort people as well.

If I was leading a convoy, I'd just take the usual trail route and walk or ride up the short switch back. It's easy and doesn't take you far out of your way. (See my Strava route from this morning.) I could even ride out to where the trail is blocked off and show you the way.

Not sure I understand your question, but I don't especially like to take Eads going to Shirlington from DC. Going from Shirlington to DC, it's fine. You make a left where you see a wide paved cul de sac area immediately adjacent to the FMR trail.

If it would help, I'd be more than happy to help guide a group from the switchback as the convoy is coming toward Shirlington, and/or, after the happy hour, to where the trail meets Eads for going back into the city. I'd just need to have an idea as to timing for the group coming to Cap City.

I don't see why Google (and dasgeh) routes it this way rather than to just continue on Army Navy to 26th and turn right. Go one block to Glebe and take a left at the light and right at Four Mile Run Drive in half a block. This will save you about 1/2 mile.

Yes, it's the same tunnel. I've taken KM-Arl rides through there. If it's busy, I don't have a problem taking Fern to Army-Navy (when I'm not towing/leading kids). It's the Army-Navy from Pentagon Row to FMR that I've never ridden and have always been curious about. It's pretty flat and, as ShawnDread pointed out, shorter than any other route. Since I have to leave later and want to be there sooner, and since I like trying new things, I'm going that way.

Speak up if you want to join the late train.

*edit* and thanks for the tips on how to get from Army-Navy to FMR. I might do the shorter way, depending on time. If not, I'll probably go the way that utilizes the most trails, because I like exploring trails.

And there are cops that might actually enforce that provision.

You can avoid the tunnel by taking Columbia Pike and Joyce between the South Parking lot and Army Navy Drive. Another alternative is taking Boundary Channel to Long Bridge Drive. Turn right to go under Route 1 on 12th Street and another right onto Army Navy Drive.

There is a short hill from Joyce Street and then a gradual downhill to the Glebe Road interchange. You may want to stay on Army Navy all the way to 26th. See the above post for a map.

It's not closed, quite scaring people, there's just a slight detour where you have to navigate some very twisty S curves or walk the bike up the stairs and then wait at a light.

So I'm just trying to figure out how much of 4MR is closed re the detour bit. I'll just follow the signs I suppose. I know once I get down to Glebe how to switch over at a few points, it's more just that stretch in Crystal City I'm not familiar with (Eads I think). But worst case, I'll just make it up as I go since I know the general direction. Should get there by 6ish I hope. I'll take Wisconsin/34th down so I can be slightly faster than my usual route.

I rode the switchback detour last night and it's so well marked that I think it's impossible to get lost.

Just remember to NOT take the bike detour from the MVT at Crystal City. Take your usual MVT,FMR route. When you are blocked off at the end, the switchback going up is right on your right. Follow the signs, riding the sidewalk, until you cross Jefferson David Hwy. (signs still guiding you). You'll ride the sidewalk, pass by the Porsche Dealership, and turn right on a ramp (again, signs right there) that takes you right back to the trail. It's a very short detour. Total piece of cake. (Only a small caveat, when crossing Jeff Davis Hwy., make sure you watch for the curb cut on the opposite side. It's not quite straight ahead of you.)

Sorry, I changed plans twice (am now riding in from DC), and when a HH starts at 4pm, a 4:15 departure actually is a bit late, really.

Jump ship! Is there anyone else in the 445 group that knows the way? (sorry, haven't been following this thread too much.)

I need to do a full post on this tomorrow, but the BAFS Happy Hour will officially start April 3 at 5 pm, although, as usual, anyone is welcome to come earlier.
The HH starts at 5.

Hey all, I just started a new thread for the late shift. I'm leaving Dupont at 545. If anyone is leaving later than 530, maybe we can meet up? I have no idea how to get anywhere in VA so would like to officially start a late convoy.

Maybe vvill and I should go get some 22s and wait for you under the bridge

That sounds like a good plan.

Beer and appetizer specials start at 4 pm, I think. Also, Cap City has been very generous in letting us use their private room at no cost.

It would be fantastic to show your appreciation in tips and by ordering appetizers or meals. Several appetizers are half price during happy hour. And of course there are the beer specials!

See ya'll soon!

I'll be leaving from 15th and H circa 6:00. We could meet up at the start of the 15th St cycletrack by the Treasury Department's corner. I used to live in Crystal City, so have a good idea of how to get to Cap City.

I may try to meet you guys on the MVT at Crystal City at 4:20 or so. Wouldn't be able to stay past 5:30 and not 100% sure I can go, so if you don't see me when you are riding by, then don't stop to wait.

Do you know how to get there? I could get to you by 6 and ride with you. I live in Takoma Park and have no freaking clue what anyone is talking about with these directions. I have a phone, but I don't trust it with new routes.

Unfortunately, I can't generally get away from my desk until 6:00. Hopefully I'll be able to slip out a bit early today, but in any event I'll be well behind the caravan. See y'all there!

Sorry, I just saw this. OK, let's meet there circa 6. I'll be in a pink jacket with yellow helmet cover.
What's your name, btw?
Thanks!

So I'm not seeing anyone that wants to join the middle shift... Please speak up, otherwise, I will not stop to look for others (and I may leave late and/or decide to go the short route using the Memorial Bridge to the 27 Trail of Wow-This-Sucks-As-A-Bike-Trail).

In view of the large number of people coming by bike - please be thoughtful about where you lock your bikes so that you don't impede pedestrians or intrude on the enjoyment of outdoor diners.

There is a lot of bike parking throughout Shirlington Village (which is only two short blocks long). Many U racks are available near the bus/transit station and at the library at the end of the street. There are also several other U racks scattered around, in addition to lamposts you can lock up to by cable lock.

Thanks!

I'll be in the 4:47ish group, and can think of about 6 different ways to get there. I suggest either LBJ Grove or Memorial Bridge to Army-Navy.

You didn't reserved the outdoor fenced in area for our WABA volunteer bike valet corral?

In case you don't see my PM and for anyone else who might want to join: I'm Ryan. I'll be the tall white guy wearing a grey suit and a yellow tie by the Treasury Department and the 15th St cycletrack around 6:00PM. My bike is an old silver mountain bike rebuilt with front and rear racks and a big saddle bag.

Just go earlier to beat the rain. Screw the rules and the guy I saw in a Velominati jersey yesterday.

I'm hanging out on a bench next to the refreshment stand. 60 year old white female, yellow and white jersey, black tights, seriously overloaded bike.

I'll join you. I plan on leaving here (buzzard point just before 5) and head to the store to get things for a pointless prize, then be at the Jefferson Memorial around 5:10-5:15 does that work for you? I was planning on cutting through the Pentagon parking lot and going down Fern then Army Navy over to EADS.

I was going to take EADS all the way to 4MR.
Would you like to ride together?

I'd love to meet and ride with you, but I really want to turn right on Army-Navy to get to FMR (not Eads). It's a route I've never ridden, though I've driven most of it.

Yes, perfect. I'll leave Capitol Hill at 5pm, so where in that range will be up to the God of traffic lights. And I DM'd you about stickers, if you're going to the store. ;-)
