View Full Version : Final BAFS Happy Hour - Thurs., Apr. 3

Arlingtonrider

Save the date! We have a reservation for Thurs., Apr. 3 at Capitol City Brewing Company/Shirlington for the final BAFS happy hour!

More details will come, but we'll need volunteers to help with a number of things, including Master of Ceremonies; a maker of a list of competitions/pointless prizes and/or a person to keep track of what we do and don't yet have award givers for; assistant name-tag/award maker (with some artistic ability?); and probably several other things we haven't thought of yet.

Additional Post-Freezing Saddles Competition:

Because #BAFS officially ends at midnight, March 19 and the Happy Hour isn't until Apr. 3, I propose an additional competition for March 20 - April 2. The winning team will be the one for which at least two members of the team (any two, and it can't always be the same two members) posts photos of themselves on a ride or enjoying a beverage with at least one member of *each* of the other teams between March 20 and April 2. To win, the team has to cover all of the other teams. Planning ahead is allowed, but the photos must be taken between March 20 and Apr. 2.

I hope the venue is ok with everyone. I looked around and Cap City still seems to offer the best combination of easy accessibility, prices, private room, good food and beer, bike and car parking, etc.

Any offers to volunteer to help in any way are appreciated, even if you have no idea yet as to what you would like to do.

Gah! I'm going to be out of town that day!

Arlingtonrider
02-18-2014, 08:21 AM
Bummer! I tried to get March 27, but their room was already reserved for that date, and Thursdays are the days that they have the awesome beer and appetizer prices. I didn't want to put the happy hour off too far after the end of the competition.

Apr. 10 might also be an option, but I haven't checked that date with Cap City yet. Preferences?

I hate to leave anyone out, but if you try to accommodate everyone you're going to be planning this for the next 8 months.

Okay, I'm in. I just told the director of the play I'm in (Actor's Nightmare, playing at Chevy Chase Community Center April 4 -19, 2014) that I'm skipping the final dress rehearsal in order to attend the Final BAFS Happy Hour. Clearly, you folks are a high priority for me! Now to stay ahead of those pesky Francophones!

Speaking of which, would anyone like to get together for a quick post-BAFS celebration after work tonight or tomorrow?

My thoughts are perhaps Good Stuff Eatery in Crystal City, Heavy Seas Alehouse in Rosslyn, or Cap City in Shirlington (Thursday night special pricing), but am open to other ideas as well.

A short one on the way home would be welcome, it's breezy, but very pleasant out this afternoon.

I'd be interested. Today wouldn't be possible (play rehearsal), but I could do any of the suggested locations tomorrow.

I had forgotten about the coffee clubs when I wrote that, but I'm up for anything anyone wants to do today and/or tomorrow evening regardless. I'll be offline for awhile this afternoon, so anyone should feel free to make a decision and I'll join you there. Any preferences, Chris or Carol? Earliest I can leave the office will be around 5. Hope that's not too late.

I don't know if you're up for something tomorrow as well. If so, I could manage any of those places (or somewhere like Chadwick's, which is in DC but right next to the Key Bridge), but I'll certainly understand if you're not up to two nights in a row of socializing.

And back on the original topic, do we yet have a time for the final BAFS Happy Hour?

Arlingtonrider
03-21-2014, 05:47 AM
Thanks so much for suggesting that, but I didn't see your note until after I had made other plans for tonight. Sorry you couldn't join us last night, but look forward to seeing you at the BAFS happy hour!

I need to do a full post on this tomorrow, but the BAFS Happy Hour will officially start April 3 at 5 pm, although, as usual, anyone is welcome to come earlier.

I know a lot of us come by bike, but I'll also mention that Shirlington has plenty of free parking starting at 5 pm. There is also a new bikeshare station almost across the street from Cap City Brewing, and a major bus station across the street from that.

An early heads up on one other thing too - those who would like to have an "official" BAFS nametag should try to let me know as soon as possible ahead of time if they plan to come to the event. ;-)

Many additional U style bike racks are available next to the Transit Station at one end of Shirlington Village and the Library at the other. It's ok to lock up to lampposts, etc. as well.

I have been looking forward to today literally since last year's happy hour. I went to happy hour last year despite not participating in the challenge, which I had initially dismissed as some thing you all crazy people did. Which it is, except I'm one of the crazy people, too, so I should have taken part last year.

Anyway, I don't want to say I was jealous, but seeing everyone celebrating the end of the challenge, it was clear that I should have been celebrating my participation instead of celebrating because I like you all and I like beer.

This year, I get to celebrate all three.

Celebration begins whenever people arrive, although the advertised time is 5:00. I won't arrive until closer to 6:00

As awards coordinator, I intend to start the awards "ceremony" at 6:30. There are a lot of awards; I expect it to go on for at least 1/2 hour--probably longer.

BAFS Poem in Honor of The Winning Team (and all who rode this winter)
Freezing Saddles

Deep inside a winter’s night
An alarm clock screams with all its might
The sun’s not up and the wind is howling
Like a grizzly’s roar or a tiger growling

You want to roll over and stay in bed
But a voice says, “Go!” inside your head
Snow is falling and the window rattles
Yes, another day of Freezing Saddles!

You slowly pull the curtain aside
It may be freezing, but it’s time to ride
Outside is many a wintry mile
Across your face spreads a thin wry smile

On with the base layers; on with the Gortex;
Gloves and booties for the Polar Vortex
Blinkies are lit and the headlight’s aglow
It’s time to head out in to the snow!

Black ice or powder, it matters not
Because you’ll give it all you’ve got
Knobbies or studs on front and back
On wooden bridges you find your track

Peddling o’er Brandymore; o’er ruts of death
Clouds of steam with every breath
Up the shivering Sisters you climb
Ahead is the horror of icy Trollheim

So you take to the streets and leave the trail
But here it’s just another tale.
Speeding cars all in a rush
Are splashing salt and slinging slush!

Just when you think you’re going berserk
You finally make it into work
Querulous coworkers cast a jaundiced eye
As their kitted office mate walks by

Backed up work’s on your desk in piles
‘Cause at lunch you rode those extra miles
Turn off the computer; lay down the pen
‘Cause now it’s time to head out again.

It’s still as cold as a witch’s ……nose
Soon you’ll have those frozen toes
The winter sun is a low red arc
And now you’re riding in the dark

“Why do you do it?” friends want to know
It’s cold, it’s dark; and there’s so much snow!
“Why don’t you drive or take a bus?”
“Why aren’t you like the rest of us?”

Sometimes you ask yourself the same
Who is it here that is to blame?
Is it the challenge; or the thrill of a quest?
Or teammates for whom you do your best?

What is the answer? You search your heart,
What is it exactly that sets you apart?
Words can’t do justice; why even try?
How will others ever understand why?

It’s making the first tracks on new fallen snow
It’s the thrill of going where few choose to go
It’s excitement and danger that fills a need
It’s your beating heart when you pick up speed

It’s the rhythm of your pedals, thighs and knees
It’s the full day ride and the lunchtime sleaze
It’s the joy in your lungs of cold crisp air
It’s the awesome silence that feels like a prayer

It’s the beauty of the sunlit snow
It’s the thrilling challenge that makes you go
It’s a pledge that goes on and on for weeks
It’s the permanent glow upon your cheeks

It’s beating your best on every ride
It’s the roaring fire that burns inside
It’s the frozen night where bright stars soar
How can you tell them all this and more?

Now, everyone’s leaning forward to hear
Why do you do this every year?
So you tell them the answer from deep inside,
Saying simply, “I’m a rider and I like to ride.”

So, when winter serves up its icy dish
And warm fingers and toes are but a wish
You forget the pain and open your eyes
All around you is the ultimate prize!

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Happy
Hour so much fun!

That poem was so good. I am impressed!

On with the base layers; on with the Gortex;
Gloves and booties for the Polar Vortex
Blinkies are lit and the headlight’s aglow
It’s time to head out in to the snow!

Black ice or powder, it matters not
Because you’ll give it all you’ve got
Knobbies or studs on front and back
On wooden bridges you find your track

Peddling o’er Brandymore; o’er ruts of death
Clouds of steam with every breath
Up the shivering Sisters you climb
Ahead is the horror of icy Trollheim

So you take to the streets and leave the trail
But here it’s just another tale.
Speeding cars all in a rush
Are splashing salt and slinging slush!

Just when you think you’re going berserk
You finally make it into work
Querulous coworkers cast a jaundiced eye
As their kitted office mate walks by

Backed up work’s on your desk in piles
‘Cause at lunch you rode those extra miles
Turn off the computer; lay down the pen
‘Cause now it’s time to head out again.

It’s still as cold as a witch’s ……nose

I hope to be able to make it next year. Looks like everyone had a good time! Thank you, Rockford10 for posting the pics. Nice to be able to put a few more faces with some screen names, even if only virtually.

[QUOTEWe can write out our own nametags though; don't see why you feel the need to do that.[/QUOTE]

I just call them nametags as a ruse. They're actually Valentine cards and expressions of respect. :)
