The SHROW is scheduled for March 8-11. No details yet, but I wanted to put out a save the date for Tuesday, March 11 when the group is scheduled to ride into DC. They'll be stopping at Proteus Bicycles again to regroup and refuel. You can meet at Proteus, or along the route (which we'll post as soon as we have some info). Hopefully we'll have better weather this year so we have can have a great turnout!

PS. This ride is another great way to stock up on BAFS points. Last year, a couple idiots and I got up early and rode to Baltimore to meet up with the long-distance riders, then rode back down to DC with them. Here's was my day of it: http://www.strava.com/activities/44152278

Tremendous fun and a great ride! Contact me or respond here if you're interested and we'll organize a meetup once we know the timing etc. -Jeff

If I'm in town I'll be interested, not sure if I can get up your way to join the ride up to Baltimore, but that would be a great way to add some Freezing Saddles miles. It was a great and moving event last year even in the pouring rain. Thanks for doing this.

I'd love to be able to actually do this this year... we'll see what's going on around that time but it's on my calendar.

We still don't have details on timing, but we're learning a little more about the route... the plan for March 11 is for the riders to go from Baltimore, to Proteus (College Park), then to the National Cathedral, and from there to the Capitol. We were planning to scout the route today, but the trails in our area are still not fit for riding. We hope to try to scout the route this weekend after we get some melting. Will post details as soon as we have them!

Not an official schedule yet, but I'm thinking the timing will be something like this:

5am Depart Greenbelt
7:30am Arrive/Depart Baltimore
10:00am Arrive Proteus
10:30am Depart Proteus
11:45am Arrive National Cathedral
12:15pm Depart National Cathedral (police escort!)
1pm Arrive U.S. Capitol

Anybody want to ride to Baltimore with me at 5am?

Folks are welcome to meetup with the ride at Proteus or at the Cathedral. Hopefully the Bishop of the National Cathedral is going to ride with us!.

Laurie will open the shop at about 9am I think so people can stage there and ride back with us after or take Metro (the shop is about a mile from Greenbelt station) back to Proteus.

All these details could change a little, but it should be a great day. Hopefully the weather will be better this year!

Here's a video from last year's ride (in the rain!)

And here's a video of getting to the bike shop from Greenbelt Metro

Here's directions from DC for anyone riding out to College Park for the 10am meetup:

I'm thinking of riding up to join you for the ride to Baltimore, but it will depend on the weather. I don't want a repeat of last year. Anyone want to leave Arlington about 3 am?

Unfortunately I have obligations at work until at least 11am. Hopefully by the year I'm actually able to join this ride there won't be a need for it anymore.

Greenbelt - a couple planning related questions:

Are you allowed to post the proposed route the ride will take from Baltimore?

Also, I'd like to get your proposed route to Baltimore.

Do you know what sort of ride pace they're shooting for (or you're shooting for)?

Thanks

I'm planning to take this basic route to Baltimore:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2449007

Although I was planning to meetup with Ben at my house instead of at the bike shop. It's in Old Greenbelt. Breakfast will be at 4:45am. PM me for the exact address.

Not exactly sure if they'll reverse this route or not -- this route takes some paths iin Baltimore city that might not work if they have a police escort.

I hope some people can meet up with us at the National Cathedral too -- I think the bishop's going to ride with us.

I'm planning a pace of about 15-16mph, 2'30" from Old Greenbelt to downtown Bmore. We could up the the pace up a bit I'm sure if we're running late -- Ben can pull -- but that 15-16 should suffice if we leave on time and don't take long stops.

For the return, I'd expect the pace to be a tiny bit faster, but not breakneck. They'll be on their fourth day of a 500 mile ride.

What's the best way to get across DC east-west at the latitude of the biggest churches? That is, from the National Shrine at Catholic U in NE to the National Cathedral in NW?

Depends what you're looking for. You could go almost straight across, as G-maps shows, or you could take RI down in front of St Matthew Cathedral, and then CT, Dupont, to Mass for more visibility.

Thanks, I think they're looking more for the fastest, safest route (which might not be the same).

Here's the route we're taking from the bike shop to the National Cathedral. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4180545

If anyone wants to joinup along the way, I'm thinking
Shortcake Bakery (Route 1 at Armentrout Drive) at about 10:45 (+-10 minutes)
12th and Newton (CaBi) at about 11am (+- 10 minutes)
Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan at about 11:15am (+-15 minutes)
National Cathedral 11:30-11:45 ish.

Also, they're not leaving Baltimore until 8am. That means we can start at 5:30am instead of 5am. So breakfast at 5:!5 instead of 4:45! Or maybe we can leave at 5:15 and take a slightly slower pace?

I might try to join you somewhere near the Capitol. Do you know what streets you'll be using to get there from the Cathedral?

I think it depends a bit on whether there's a police escort, which I'm not sure of yet. The route I sent them (assuming no escort) to come down from the Cathedral to the Calvert Street bridge, take 19th to Q to 15th Street cycletrack to PA Ave cycletrack.

Looks like they got a spirited welcome to their stop last night in Harlem. I strongly urge you to do some wheelies when you join up!

Thanks for taking and posting these great photos Rod. I'm not so good with the iphone while I'm riding. Thanks to everyone who came out to ride with us - good to see Arlingtonrider, Jopamora, Consularrider (who put in over 100 miles today), and of course, Greenbelt (also with over 100 miles today) who is my hero. It was a great day to be out and a thrill to ride down Mass and Penn with a motorcade. So happy that we could support Team 26 as they continue to honor victims of gun violence.
