View Full Version : Freezing Saddles Side Bet #FSSB Week 1

Good morning folks, welcome to Freezing Saddles. If you thought today was cold wait till tomorrow!
As you know Freezing Saddles is an all volunteer effort, and I volunteered to offer side bets throughout the competition, for a little added competition (for those who can't get enough) or for those who are already out of the running for miles or team championships but still want the added sting of defeat from yet another contest ;)

This first week's side bet is quick, but will not be realized until the end of the competition. I'm throwing this out here in honor of all of those new years resolutions to lose weight, and get in shape. Side Bet #1 is a "Biggest Loser" contest, but since that's probably trade marked I'll just call it the "Fattest Loser" contest. As Freezing Saddlers you have an advantage over your fellow men/women since you will actually be getting out there this winter and living rule 5, 9, and often rule 10. Rules for this side bet are simple: (on your honor) weigh your self this week and post your weight on this thread (if you are brave). Ride like hell for 78 days then weigh your self again (on the same scale if possible) and post your weight again on March 18t-19th. Quote your original post in your follow up post and do your own math. Male and Female winners will be the ones who lose the largest % of their body wieght. The winner will receive some sort of yummy pastry/cupcake/bacon-cheddar scone (?)

Now I need to go find a scale.

Alright I'll bite. Since I can't necessarily go for big miles this winter I may as well use this to accomplish a different goal. I'm probably the perfect candidate for this challenge.

On 1/1 I weighed myself at 277.3

Goal is about 240 by June.

Any other takers?

okay Jan1, 174 lbs, and I am only 5'4. I cannot believe I weigh this much but it is reality. I just keep telling myself muscle weighs more than fat. Yikes. need to be good this year. But I in. My goal is always 135 I have never reached that goal but it is there none the less.

Wow, I inadvertently sandbagged this, what with November-December filled with travel, work, head injury and crappy diet (thanks for pointing that out, Tim). But I don't actually know how much I weigh at the moment. We'll see if I face the scale at home tonight or tomorrow.

Well, heck, now I wish I'd waited to lose the weight I lost over the summer. I worked really hard! and no one even bought me a yummy pastry/cupcake/bacon-cheddar scone as a prize! But, ok, since ideally I'd like to lose a couple more still, I will throw myself into the hat for this. 123.6 on 12/31. My goal is 115, which will be challenging but theoretically possible by spring, and will be 7% if I can do it.

After I started all this cycling back in September, my goal was to get from 200 down to 185; about six weeks ago I plateaued at a few pounds off my goal, and haven't been able to get the last few off yet. So, this is the perfect challenge for me! I weighed in this morning at 188, and will see how far I can get.

Liz W, you and I are both in the same boat. I claim to be 5'5" (and actually am first thing in the AM but am more likely 5'4" come lunchtime) and my weight as of 1/1 was 177.2 with a goal weight of 135 (yeah, as if!). I'm pretty darn sure I'm not going to win this challenge (because I've done essentially nothing to amend my foolish dietary ways) but I was really surprised to see that my scale read 182.5 tonight when I got home, compared with my 188 on Jan 2. Who knew? I find it encouraging. I'm sure all of you more disciplined folks on this challenge can do even better! (I might as well be a cheerleader, if I can't win...)

That was Jan. 2. Today I weighed in at 180.5, so I passed my 185 goal, which is great. As for the side bet:

188 - 180.5 = 7.5
7.5 is %3.98 of 188

If you'll allow me to round that, it's a %4 loss. Not great, but I'm happy about it, since I've done nothing to change my diet, except that I eat way more than I did before I started cycling!

I didn't post when competition started, but I was weighing in right at 180. I was 169 last week, so have dropped 11lbs (6%) this winter. This was strictly by paying attention to what I eat (I rode less than I had been), which has been quite a revelation. My wife finds it a little annoying that I can continue losing weight while eating 4,000-4500 calories a day (I burn about 1200-1500 on a normal commute [roundtrip]).

Without meaning to sound all, "You kids, get off my lawn!", it is possible that you will not be able to sustain this for your entire adult life, even with that level of physical activity.

I can maintain my weight eating about 1500-2000 calories a day. I can lose weight at 1200 to 1500. I guess because I weigh less I'm not burning as many calories on my commute.

Oh, yes, I have no doubt of this. I was surprised myself. Calculator suggests that my BMR should be 1760 calories, so 3,000 (or maybe it's 3,200 I haven't quite figured it out) is obviously a little skewed. Honestly, having my metabolism slow down a bit would not be all bad; eating that much is kinda costly. And with two growing boys that apparently love eating ....

People keep telling my husband he must be saving so much money on gas by biking to work. His joke back is the amount dropped at the bike store far outweighs the amount saved on gas. I'm starting to think any saved gas money is really going to the grocery store. He eats all the time and we've got two boys about to be teens. #tacotuesday.

Looking back through this thread, I think I may have been the leader in the men's category for this side bet until you chimed in with your big weight loss numbers yesterday. If I didn't know better, I'd think you just wanted to steal the prize jelly donut (or whatever the prize is) to offset the cost of food.

Oh? I was sure there were more significant weight loss numbers from someone else. I honestly wasn't competing for this one, I was just kinda happy to have lost some obviously-unnecessary weight. We'll see if it helps at all in my climbing abilities this season. I don't know that I am even eligible to play since I'm on the unofficial team (Slackers).

I'd forgotten we had separate categories for men and women on this one. I think I may be close to the top on the women's one, if only because I had the most to lose in the first place. However, it looks like my teammate acl was the overall winner.

I had the most to lose in the first place.

If indeed I am at the top of the men's category, it's because after only six months of cycling, my body is still trying to find its new (lower) ideal weight. I won't be in the running for a similar side bet next year, I'm sure. In the meantime, I keep cinching my belt (the alternative is unpleasant).
