View Full Version : Slacker Team?

Would you be interested in being a member of a prestigious slacker team? This team would not be competing for first place - it would simply be part of the festivities and ruthlessly complete for utterly pointless prizes. No pressure; just pointless.

If you would like to be a part of a team that has no purpose, like this post. If you like this post - and if we have enough slackers, I will note on your registration that you are a soul who enjoys intensity on the mellow road to nowhere. You will be placed on a "Slacker" team (or teams).

Where the rules are made up and the points dont matter.

Slacker team members should get negative points for beating their handicap :)

Bumping this. Like the first post if you want to be on the designated slacker team. This is a team that is NOT going for first place and will have no pressure to ride ride ride ride ride ride ride ride ride ri.... Slacker team will be fulled endorsed and eligible for all other pointless parts of this challenge.

Also, reminder that once Saint Nick is down the chimney, registration in FS14 is closed.

Teams will be announced at the Jan 2 Happiness Hour.

I want to amend my original affirmation.

This is my first Freezing Saddles (though not my first winter in my freezing saddle), so I'm not yet sure I should give a shit about points. For ref, I bike 13 miles a day, at least 5 days a week. Can that get me some non-pointless prizes? Because I could go for some prizes.

Otherwise, count me as slacker, by all means.

Pointless prizes are awarded on a completely arbitrary and capricious manner. While previous participants attempted to bring the matter before the town sheriff, Mongo intervened causing havoc.

I guess you just won't know who your competition is, so you'll have to work together in the pelaton.

Now I want to have a Kidical team, so we can all be ahead in the leaderboard. (There will be a New Year's Day Kidical Mass. I'm calling your bluff on any Hains Point madness)

Bluff? I've got three consectutive Hains Point New Years Centuries under my belt in temperatures ranging from 26 to 50. Of course as of December 16, the Farmers' Alamanac (http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/2013/12/16/will-new-years-eve-be-frigid-or-fair/) is predicting a wintery mix. :( Still too far out for weather.com.

M'k. 3 of the people who clicked that they want to be on the slacker team, are not registered for Freezing Saddles.

So as of this moment, unless clarity is bestowed on the registration minion, the slacker team is unlikely.

Seems in keeping with the slacker theme...I'd call the whole thing a grand success!

Procrastination is all part of being a slacker! But OK, I'd better sign up before family descends and the madness begins.

99% of my rides are what Dickie calls "sleaze (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?6297-Freezing-Saddles-2014-Prizes&p=72402#post72402)". Does that make me a good fit?

It depends on how many of them you do in a day.

Or, I guess, bother to record in Strava. That's gonna be my biggest problem with BAFS, dealing with the kludgy data entry after forgetting to start & stop the phone app. I think I would have to be on the slacker team so as not to let down all the folks that ride 15mi each way to work and then do 50 milers on the weekends for fun. (Ah, what luxury.)

Teams are weighted. A short distance cyclists will be as crucial to every team as the long distance cyclists - all teams will have both. Teams are formed by adding up the handicap score of each cyclists, and forming teams of ~9 so that each team has approximately the same handicap score. No matter who you are, if you ride more than your handicap, you rock!

Your biggest problem with BAFS is going to be riding your bike in shitty, soul-crushing weather while the rest of our species is warm and dry in their train/plane/automobile. By comparison, occasionally forgetting to start and stop your phone will be about as challenging as a sleaze ride on a warm breezy day.

TEAM SLACKER!

I joined the slacker team for a reason. I'm just a commuter and my commute is my only "free" time, between work and mommy duties, so that is that. I was NOT going to be able to do any extra riding, just for "points." No way. Then, it got snowy and icy, then I got sick and there I was, dragging team down. The slacker of the slackers. So, today I thought, why not just ride my bike a little, the weather is nice, the rest of the family will drive and I'll meet them there. No one is harmed, and I'll get some points for the team. Then, as I was explaining to my daughter why mommy was riding the bike (to get points), without having any idea what I was talking about, she said "I want to get some points too." So, that's how I found myself actually doing an extra ride today, with the kid in tow. And it was beautiful day to be doing it. Thanks freezing saddles :)

Was that with the Weehoo? I spotted a mom and daughter out with a Weehoo on Williamsburg eastbound this afternoon. Sure was a beautiful day for a ride. Seeing you (or them, if this wasn't you) made me realize that it was in fact warm enough for the "red trailer" (Weehoo) and I felt momentarily guilty for not proposing riding with my son ... but he was much-needed napping so the guilt quickly passed. :)

That was us! Hopefully you didn't overhear me telling my daughter to pedal harder to get us up those hills.

I did not! Though the sentiment would be familiar. My son has no excuse for not pedaling [forward] now that he has demonstrated being able to pedal his own bike :)

Go Slackers! If Bob just gives us a few more busy people and casual riders for our team we could be threatening those serious teams. ;)

This might only work for boys, but when my son was on the trailer cycle we used to play a space ranger game. I would call back for a "power boost" on the hills. He would enthusiastically respond, calling out, "more power!" You had to be strategic about it because the burst usually didn't last too long.

I gave in and officially joined the slacker team! (Thanks to rcannon100 and greenbelt for permitting the very slacker late entry.) I decided to not let my pride get in the way of enjoying the social aspects of the competition :)

I'll be back for a real go next year. Or at least that's the current plan.
